The version of Exchange (Standard vs. Enterprise) makes no difference
for running Forestprep or Domainprep. Just make sure that you run
Forestprep in your root domain, then run domainprep on every domain that
will host mail-enabled objects. Also, don't forget to create additional

I am planning to run exchange2003 /forestprep at the forestroot of our AD, the root
will have 1 exchange2003 server (just 50 users, 1 storage group) but the childomains
will have their own exchange2003 servers (some of them 10 databases).

We are trying to upgrade a server from Exchange 5.5 standard to Exchange
5.5 enterprise.
The server was just build w/ standard - a database restored from another
server to be retired w/ the same name. Restore worked fine, had the
server running standard edition no problem
We then tried to
sp4
w/o incident... Onto the hotfixes...
Thanks anyway - anyone who wants to explain this, take your best shot :)

We are trying to upgrade
I think you're overcomplicating this. All you should have to do is install
Exchange 5.5 Enterprise on top of Standard and reapply the latest service
pack, after taking a couple of backups of course.

Hi -
This sounds like it may be the most asked question but it does not seem easy
to find. I'm trying to find out what Exchange version was installed on this
server that I inhherited, Standard or Enterprise. The Server in sunnning on
WinNT 4.0 SP6a and Exchange 5.5 SP4.
Thanks
Mario
From the faq:
3.53 Q: How do I determine whether I have the Standard or Enterprise version
of Exchange Server 5.5 Installed?
A: To determine whether you have a Standard or Enterprise version of
Exchange Server 5.5 installed, check the Windows NT Server Event Viewer
Application log on startup
When the Information store starts it will say its either a 16Gb limited
store, or it will say unlimited store. Check out the eventlog (app).
Standard = 16Gb
Enterprise = unlimited

I swear MS are hiding this information from me. I'm currently looking
for the feature comprison table that compares the standard and
Enterprise version of Exchange 2000. Anyone know of any pointers to
this?
Many thanks, Jason

I swear MS are hiding
I was just told that a move from Standard to Enterprise Version requires a
new Exchange server license, not an upgrade.
Can it be true?

I shut down all the services but the most basic NT services. I
specifically shut down SNMP and a host of Compaq services. There were no

I was going through the Enterprise Edition requirements.
Microsoft states that it requires NT 4.0 Enterprise Edition. If I'm not

We've reached the 16.0 GB limit and are preparing to upgrade to the
Enterprise version. Are there any show stoppers I should be aware of
before proceeding?

No reason to use Enterprise unless you need 4GB of memory or clustering or

I'm seeing mixed opinions in the archives about the best way to upgrade
Exchange 5.5 Standard to Enterprise. FAQ states:
1. Do a backup. (yadda yadda online, offline, ERD)
2. Run setup from the Enterprise CD
3. Select Reinstall option to upgrade the server
Archives hint at re-applying NT SPs
