Back to the original question, on the bottom tool bar ( which gnome call
their panel), there is normally 4, or what ever amount is selected ,
I change devfs=mount to devfs = nomount in lilo.conf and now it works.

the install CD, select expert and upgrade, choose to install nothing and
let it fix the problem. It will almost certainly give you a bootable
system in 10 - 20 minutes.
