In the early days of PC's serial and parallel ports were the only things

I am a user of linux and I sympatise with you concerning the modem
problem you are now having, However I may be of some assistance to you,
that is if you are willing to invest in another modem, I have found that
you can installed only jumper modems into linux and set it up on either

Internal has nothing directly to do with it.Virtually all external serial port
modems will work. I believe external USB modems will work if your version of Linux
and MB support USB, though I haven't tried any yet. V

NOT true! We run several internal modems, and your claim only applies
to WINmodems.

Actually, those lines should go into the file /etc/r

Absolutely not. More than 90% of ISA internal modems and a small but
growing percentage of PCI modems are "real" modems and are fully supported
under both Linux and *BSD. As far as dete

Internal modems ARE supported, as long as they are not WinModems. I was
running a Zoom 14k4 internal with SlackWare
Internal Modem support in Linux is not presently available. Most of the currrent
internal modems are WINDOWS dependant. Support is promised (I am told) in future
releases.

Hi
There are certain modems which are not true modems, the so called winmodems. They
require windows software to run. But many internal modems do run on linux. You
may find the following link helpful.

those are soft-modems.. they need software code to work.. and mostly this
code is written for windows.. only recently companies have started writing
code for linux.. crib to your company to get s/w for linux for that modem.

I downloaded the user reference manuals for the Compaq Armada E700 and M700
Their modems, whether network or standard models, are DSP types off a
house-numbered US Robotics Chipset.

Hi gents,
My boss has just given to me a notebook Compaq Armada 700.
After having problem to configure XFree on it ( the video card is a Rage
Mobility P ) everuthing is going OK.
Now my Linux ( Mandrake 6.1 ) doesn't recognize the internal Modem ( I suppose
it is a Compaq modem built by 3 COM )
