 With The Beatles you always had the impression that they managed to stay lads 
from Liverpool and (just about) were able to keep their feet on the ground 
despite the hysteria.
 

 The real Bowie though was always an enigma hidden behind his many persona.
 

 So this quote from Iman - "I fell in love with David Jones. I did not fall in 
love with David Bowie. Bowie is just a persona. He's a singer, an entertainer. 
David Jones is a man I met" - captures the difference between a fan's 
infatuation and a real encounter.

Russell and Alistair Shearer. It's also a photo-book with evocative 
black-and-white prints. 
 Out-of-print now so I shall jealousy guard my copy. 
 

 I had previously read the Juan Mascaro translation you like. It is one of only 
two books I ever read through while stoned on hash. The other was Hermann 
Hesse's Journey to the East. 

Re "Tolstoy's War and Peace, King Lear, Whitman's Leaves of Grass, the poetry 
of Blake.":
 

 Whitman/Blake were big for me too.
 

 King Lear I could never ("never, never, never, never, never") get. Too grim. 
Just shows how shallow I am. I'm more Midsummer Night's Dream and Romeo and 
Juliet.
 

 A BBC five-part series on War and Peace is currently getting rave reviews. The 
cast is great, the scenes spectacular but it's pretty "one-dimensional". 
Downton Abbey on steroids.

Yes, I have that edition of the Upanishads too, trans. by Alistair Shearer and 
Peter Russell. In fact, I have two copies, so if anyone would like one, just 
let me know. 

Lear is ruthless, I agree. You have to be in the mood for it. I actually prefer 
to read it than see it performed. Someone here in Fairfield produced an 
abridged, two-hour version of the play a couple of years ago. It was 
surprisingly effective.

  it appears that India had two Golden Ages (the "original" Indus/Sarawati 
civilization starting about 5,000 years ago (or before), lasting until the 
drying up of the Sarawati River, 2000 BCE.  Then, another Golden Age would be 
from about 300 CE to 1000 CE which included the Chola Dynasty.  At this time, 
India's net economic production was about 1/3 of the world's, and Hindu culture 
spread to other parts of Asia and Africa.
   It appears that repeated Muslim invasions contributed to an overall decline 
after about 1200 CE.  UCSD Cognitive Neurologist Dr. V. S. Ramachandra puts the 
blame a the feet of the British, who started with rather benign East India 
Trading posts in many Indian cities but eventually took over with military and 
political power, lasting into the middle of the 20-th Century. Further google

 Here's a rather funny quote from the above website: "Most of the rural people 
are lazy, dull, and reluctant to work. Hence, they rot in poverty". (but

residential SCI course several decades ago. One of the course leaders was young 
and very boyish-looking, and within a day of arrival he was complaining to us 
(the other course leaders), in an astonished voice, that one of the CPs (course 
participants) had propositioned him for sex. The CP was a male from 
Afghanistan.

I don't think she says anything about the nationality of the people in the 
video. Could be second or even third generation Muslims in Germany which would 
be even more damning. The point of the video,I would assume, is that these kids 
haven't assimilated very well. Obviously, they don't like Germans very well and 
don't have any German friends and seem to have a superiority complex, that they 
are better than Germans. Why? Well one reason is that Germans eat pork!  How 
disgusting! Who could associate with someone who eats pork? You are what you 
eat syndrome. But the Germans have offered to share their homeland with them 
and welcome them. If you invited someone into your home and they developed a 
superiority complex over you,  and looked down on you,how long would they be

Further to my last comment, I do recall that The Last Picture Show, a very 
popular novel from the 1970s by Larry McMurtry, is set in small-town Texas, 
where the high school males frequently amuse themselves by f–––ing heifers. I 
guess that's just what young white males do down there in the great state of 
Texas, eh, Mike? I guess some of those heifers are pretty cute, though, 
probably more attractive than many of the high school girls.

Feste, this is common in many Islamic nations. A Green Barret officer stationed 
in Afghanistan was recently court Martial-ed because he beat the crap out of an 
Afghan police officer that he caught raping a little boy. The boys mother had 
complained to the Green Barret officer about the situation.He had been ordered 
not to interfere in the problem because it was a cultural issue but he caught 
the guy a second time and then came unglued. It seems that older men having 
anal sex with younger boys is a normally accepted practice there. Evidently it 
is not considered homosexuality on the part of the part of the rapist.

   Further to my last comment, I do recall that The Last Picture Show, a very 
popular novel from the 1970s by Larry McMurtry, is set in small-town Texas, 
where the high school males frequently amuse themselves by f–––ing heifers. I 
guess that's just what young white males do down there in the great state of 
Texas, eh, Mike? I guess some of those heifers are pretty cute, though, 
probably more attractive than many of the high school girls.
