I know it sounds like an airy-fairy hippie dream to go on about '60s peace and love, said the 61-year-old singer, who was born Donovan Leitch in the Maryhill area of Glasgow. But the world is ready for this now, it is clear this is the time. He said the university will be located in either Glasgow or Edinburgh. Donovan discovered transcendental meditation while visiting India and guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in 1968. The Maharishi told me during that 1968 visit that I should build a university in Edinburgh. I went to my room and drew a beautiful dome-shaped place of learning, he said Friday. I didn't know what to do because I couldn't do this on my own. But then I met David Lynch, who told me about the positive effects of TM in education. Although it's taken me 35 years, I will do what the Maharishi told me to do. Donovan and Lynch, Oscar-nominated director of Blue Velvet, Mullholland Dr. and The Elephant Man, are part of a tour to promote transcendental meditation as a means of reducing violence, crime and stress in schools and colleges. The David Lynch Foundation has introduced TM to schools in the U.S., where the 61-year-old filmmaker claims it has transformed results and behavior. We have gone into some of the most deprived areas and turned around kids with violent emotional and behavioral problems, he said. The duo said they will now contact Scottish authorities to have the institution accredited. They have also sent letters to the 443 mayors of the Netherlands' cities, Amsterdam's police chief, the 14 ministers of the national government, parliamentary committees, and the 12 governors of the provinces, explaining the seven-point programme to create an ideal world offered by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Founder of the Global Country of World Peace. The chairman of a key parliamentary committee is supportive, Dr Meijles said. 'He says he will see that more parliamentary members read the letter carefully, and act on it.' The celebration was broadcast via satellite to the assembly gathered at the Fairmount Empress Hotel in Victoria and in locations across Canada, to commemorate this occasion, which marks the day when the gates of enlightenment first opened for all of Canada. The highlight of the celebration was the address of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. (See Global Good News article Commemorating Maharishi's first visit to Canada 46 years ago) At the end of his address, Maharishi requested Dr Kaplan to describe the Capital of Heaven on Earth, the Capital of Raam Raj on the island of Ganges, in Canada. Dr Kaplan said, 'We've been looking around the world to find that place, whose scenic grandeur matches the . . . internal grandeur. What is that place, which inspires on the outside, the divinity which is inside? And very fortunately, Dr Paterson [General Secretary of the Parliament of World Peace] has brought us to the point where we have bought some land which I am now going to describe.' Dr Kaplan said that in considering land all over the world, the goal was to find a location so beautiful that seeing it 'would feel like looking in, would be heaven'. Dr Paterson found such a spot on the island of Ganges, Dr Kaplan said. To the east, the ocean is dotted with islands that sparkle like jewels, and whales are visible going up and down the west coast of Canada. With 43 million people, Colombia is the third most populated Latin American country. It needs 660 Yogic Flyers to reach invincibility and ease the tension it has been suffering for many years. Dr Alvarez reported, 'Yesterday and the day before, Luz Marino la Scagno, the National Leader of Colombia for the Global Country of World Peace, was graduating 150 new Yogic Flyers', for a total of 270 graduates in the last few weeks; and that 600 more are in the process of learning the TM-Sidhi Programme, which includes Yogic Flying, in the next weeks. In Chile, about 400the number needed for its invincibilityhave now learned Transcendental Meditation in schools; and they will be ready to learn the TM-Sidhi Programme after this week of holidays. 'Then Rafael de la Puente, the country's National Leader and Founder of Invincibility for the Global Country of World Peace will have his country invincible. This will also be a great joy for everyone,' Dr Alvarez points out, as Chile is 'such an important country in Latin America with a population of 16 million people'. The largest country in Latin America, with almost 200 million people, is Brazil, which will rise to invincibility sometime between September and November. A similar situation is also taking shape in Mexico, where two universities and one school are offering Consciousness-Based Education (through which, in addition to their regular curriculum, students have the opportunity to learn Transcendental Meditation and Yogic Flying). Dr Alvarez estimates that Mexico will gain invincibility in the next 8 weeks. Trinidad will be starting a programme not only for the invincibility of Trinidad, but also for the invincibility of the whole Caribbean, with 400-500 Yogic Flyers in the next three months. Vice-Chancellor of Venezuela's private Iutirla University with 40,000 students on 24 campuses in 13 towns throughout Venezuela, Mr Tucker has personally organized the official introduction of Consciousness-Based Education into the curriculum of the university. Mr Tucker, whose father and grandfather started and built up Venezuela's largest private university, says he wants to provide the students in his care with everything they need to meet the challenges of today's world. He sees Consciousness-Based Education as the system that will do this most effectively. The news that Mr Tucker had signed an agreement with the Global Country of World Peace was reported on the Maharishi Channel on 20 August by Dr Jose Luis Alvarez Roset, Raja of Latin America. Raja Luis explained that Venezuela has a population of 29 million and thus requires around 500 Yogic Flyers to crown the nation with invincibility. The country is also favoured by nature in that it has the Angel Falls, the largest waterfalls in the world, and a large coastline to the north. Water bodies to the north or east are auspicious and bring favourable influences, according to Vastu Vidya, or the science of orientation and placement embodied in Maharishi Sthapatya Veda. Mr Tucker, a man of great foresight and insight, has personally designed the publicity materials to bring Consciousness-Based Education to his students' attention. He also takes every opportunity to personally recommend the programme to them. This new addition to the curriculum will be an option that students can take, and will supplement a wide range of vocational and academic courses offered by the university. Students at all campuses opting into Consciousness-Based Education will receive instruction simultaneously by videoconference. This will ensure that there is no delay in the maximum number of students starting to practise the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi Programme, including Yogic Flying, which is the technology at the core of this most advanced educational system. Mr Tucker is also the President of the Private Education School Association in Venezuela, which has 250,000 students under its care. The uptake of Consciousness-Based Education in the country, therefore, is potentially very much greater even than at present. For personal stories of our dear Maharishi, there's nothing like than the charming and powerful book written by Helena Olson about Maharishi's first days in the United States. The book first came out in 1967 as A Hermit in the House, then in the 80's daughter Theresa re-published it as Maharishi at 433. The latest version came out in 2001, with some fascinating additions, and titled His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi: A Living Saint for the New Millennium. Mrs. Olson, with a degree in theater, skillfully tells of the comings and goings in the house during the several months that Maharishi stayed there. She paints a vivid portrait of Maharishi, fresh from India and knowing little of the West, yet most skillfully organizing, what would soon be a worldwide movement. It includes intimate question and answer sessions with the earliest meditators, very sincere and well-educated seekers, on religion and other fascinating topics. She also describes Maharishi personally teaching Transcendental Meditation to many stars and celebrities including a truly memorable account of Maharishi's initiation of a certain very distinguished Mr. H, who Tina Olsen later revealed to an MUM audience to have been the wise and famous novelist on eastern philosophy, Herman Hesse. Mother Olsen's book is really worth reading. Here it is: ~ Supplement to A Hermit in the House by Helena Olson In January of 1959, I witnessed a phenomena for which I have no explanation. I do not care to discuss all phases of it, but wish to mention briefly that for two hours in the middle of the day, the sky above our home was filled with rainbows and masses of clouds which were shot with vibrant colors as they floated over our garden. We had no rain for days previously, nor was that day cloudy except for the two hours; even so, the sun shone so brilliantly that often I had to turn my head away from it, although clouds were near it. For one hour a lady friend who was staying with us, observed it with me. We both became fatigued from looking up. She retired to her room and I took a pillow, climbed to the roof of a small house in our garden, lay down and watched the display for one more hour from there. At one time, the display became so overpowering I called on the Name of God to be able to breathe. The moment it was over, it seemed as though the sun had left the sky, although actually it was still shining. All nature had been glorified. For about three days I felt unable to nor had any desire to speak. I told my family about it, and we were surprised it was never mentioned in the newspapers as many, many people must have seen it. I prayed to know more about it, and one day I mentioned it briefly to Maharishi. I could not resist saying to him, Maharishi, did you come with the clouds? He did not answer. Only smiled. ~~ Looking back on it, Mrs. Olson said she feels this experience was a Heaven-sent omen.
