Can you explain to me why you feel that describing
Maharishi's actions with the phrase "a grumpy old coot
who doesn't like it when he has to deal with real people
instead of Yes-men" constitutes "abuse?"

What about that phrase is not *true* about the situation
we are discussing?

Or is "abuse" related to telling the truth, period?

Curious minds want to know...

It's not easy to tell why Feste thinks MMY was being abused, since the part he quoted was simply about the NYT reporter asking him some questions, generally in a respectful manner. Strange idea of abuse.

What this snotty comment means is that MMY asked John what the
reporter said, as he didn't hear it, so John repeated the question.

It's a good question. Theoretically, the *teacher* is
the one who is supposed to be more highly evolved, and
thus more able to understand and be compassionate about
the failings of his or her students.

But almost the entire history of spiritual teaching is
slanted the other direction, to convince the student
that he needs to forgive (or worse, overlook) any
failings in the teacher.

And, it is worth remembering that in the actual event
being discussed, the failing is clearly on Maharishi's
side. The reporter is respectful, patient, and goes
out of her way to ignore his outbursts and keep the
questioning on track. Maharishi, in contrast, pitches
a hissy fit and is more than rude to her. He basically
acts like a petulant child while she acts like an
adult.

You really shouldn't have added the smiley face to your comment,
Barry, as it takes away from the seriousness of the statement.

With the smiley face, feste37 and others so predisposed may actually
think you're kidding. And, thus, your action may cause his and
others' deaths.

This brings up an issue for me - why do we tend to "blame" the student/disciple
for not
having enough faith, or enough belief to overlook bad behavior, rather than the
other way
around?

Woe to the person who is afraid to point it out
when his spiritual teacher is talking crazy, for
he is a prime candidate for drinking the Kool-Aid,

Quite a contrast with Mike S.'s court proceedings yesterday, isn't it?

the questions were pretty good and don't understand MMY's getting
pissed off, except that he's gotten so used to dealing only with
yes-men within the separate reality that is intl tmo.

The responses regarding wanting tm teachers to make money and not
wanting publicity struck me as the most unreal. Well, the stuff about
Hagelin taking over the US we just ignore now, right?

The only other time I've heard real reporters ask good questions about
the mov't to MMY was about 10 yrs ago when an Israeli journalist/
meditator got in -- MMY didn't exactly get pissed but he responded to
those types of questions with lots of doubletalk or 1 word answers.
