Re: [FairfieldLife] Re: Turq's Best TV Series Of 2012
I've been watching some comedy movies the last couple of days. One was "The Watch" with Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade ("The IT Crowd"). Stiller plays the manager of a Costco who must have financed this film, that gets invaded by aliens. "A Little Bit Zombie" is a comedy about a guy who gets bitten by a mosquito carrying a zombie virus and how he and his friends deal with it that is available NF WI. For a holiday film I watched the 1996 "Jack Frost" which is a dark holiday comedy also on NF. Agreed - an extraordinary character/performance. I share most of your list (especially Breaking Bad). I hesitate to suggest some of my other favourites as I'm not sure if they're available outside the UK. One program I found fascinating was on "Sky Arts" - actor "Brian Blessed: In Confidence". http://skyarts.sky.com/in-confidence/brian-blessed (As Henry VIII on YouTube: http://youtu.be/zZl3BDtT5cA) I think many folks here on FFL would be very interested in his "spiritual" side. He would spontaneously meditate from an early age. At one point he mentions going to a meditation centre in England run by disciples of the Shankaracharya of Northern India". Who he? ;-) A fine programme about a truly larger- than-life character in every sense of the word. Then there were two programmes which, whilst good in themselves, really came into their own in juxtaposition. The first was Richard E Grant's "Hotel Secrets" in which our hero visits the most expensive and ostentatious accommodation in the world. It's a tough job; someone's got to do it (for us). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUt8WVBbmgw Grant is a great companion on this "journey" (ain't everything a journey nowadays?). But the levels of excess on display are mind-blowing. Just for example - at one point he talks us through what it's like to tuck into a $5,000 hamburger. And so we get an enumeration of the visceral: "Oooh, grrrh, aaah, YES, YES, YES!". But he means it. That's fine, but when it's taken with the next programme, you get the full existential hit. This was the BBC's "Welcome to India": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXdnGXjV-fI Here we saw folks - very cheerful, happy, non screwed-up folks on the whole - living at the exact opposite end of the human material condition. So - much food for thought. Anyhoo, Merry Christmas FFLers everywhere. I expect the missus will now insist on the ritual Christmas Eve viewing of Alastair Sim as Scrooge...

The producers got a better payoff by allowing it to be remade as an American series, and don't want DVD sales cutting into their profits. The same thing -- sadly -- looks like it is going to happen with "The Bridge." I've heard that there is an American ripoff series of it in the works, which prob- ably means that Americans like yourself ( unless you upgrade to piracy :-) will never get to see Sofia Helin's work in the original. > However there are signs that the public is tiring of > being strung along year after year on a show as writers > have a more and more difficult time of keeping story lines > interesting. Give me a good movie over a series any day. You betray your America-conditined sensibilities here. The Danish filmmakers have said that Forbrydelsen III is the last of that series they'll ever make. They said what they had to say, and now they're ready to move on to new material, and new characters. What would be SAD is if the producers of "Breaking Bad" were to allow themselves to be bribed into doing one more series past next year's expected "last season." THAT would be "jumping the shark." So would doing the same thing with "Dexter." Leave the party when people are still sad to see you go. Partygoers understand this. Why don't TV producers? As for preferring movies to TV, I couldn't come up with a "Top Twelve" movie list I've seen this year if I tried. There wouldn't be enough films to qualify. TV is where it's happening these days.

They really stretched credulity this year. Deb became a co-conspirator and shot Maria...WTF? If Deb helps Dexter collect blood slides or stabs one of his kills up close and personal next season, they've jumped the shark fer sure. Regardless, love Dexter. > --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, turquoiseb wrote: > > > > In descending order, as they occur to me, based purely > > on how much they grabbed me while watching them, and > > on how strongly the impressions of them stick with me. > > Your mileage may vary. > > > > 1. While you are welcome to your opinion, I stick with mine, based on -- if nothing else -- the presence of Yvonne Strahovski as Hannah. She "hooked" me within half a second of seeing her onscreen, and I thought that Yvonne did a *fine* job of being the best "match" so far in the series for Dex. Especially being an Australian and all. As for what the final season has in store, Dex and Sis being now *really* partners in crime and all, one can only imagine. > Justified was good, but not as good as the season with > Mags Bennett. Agreed. No comparison. I probably included it because I'm hoping that any positive energy thrown its way will help the series not to get canceled. > Breaking Bad was excellent, as usual. Absofuckinglutely. >From the first episode to the last, it was the epitome of "thinking out of the box" and great dramatic present- ation. Bryan Cranston as Walt went WAY, WAY, WAY over the top this year, forging new territory into "over-the- topness," and eclipsing almost any other actor I can think of in that category. The "Say My Name" episode was as perfect a presentation of madness as I have ever seen. And the finale? What can I say? They presented us with the Ultimate Horror. That is, that Walt could Get Away With It, and wind up living a wealthy life in the 'burbs. And then one cop has to take a crap, and the entire Breaking Bad universe changes for the next (and possibly the last) season. I know (from friends to whom I send pirated copies) that you can't get easy access to The Bridge or Forbrydelsen or Borgen there in the U.S., but they really are good. I loved Sherlock because of the near-scholastic knowledge of the Arthur Conan Doyle novels on which this modern update was based, but also because of the everpresent sense of humor underlying the series, and of course the performances by Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. I felt that Copper should be mentioned because it was a very interesting hybrid -- a British series filmed in America about American history. I thought that they did a *tremendous* job, given the budget restraints. My comparison of it to Deadwood is not made without regard to the ramifications of making it. :-) Game Of Thrones should IMO be more appreciated. It's one of the best literature ever dramatized on television, and I suspect will be regarded as such by future generations. > --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, turquoiseb wrote: > > > > In descending order, as they occur to me, based purely > > on how much they grabbed me while watching them, and > > on how strongly the impressions of them stick with me. > > Your mileage may vary. > > > > 1. Breaking Bad, Justified, and Dexter are the only ones on your list that I watch, and of those, the final season of Dexter was the biggest disappointment. Justified was good, but not as good as the season with Mags Bennett. Breaking Bad was excellent, as usual. --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, turquoiseb wrote: > > In descending order, as they occur to me, based purely > on how much they grabbed me while watching them, and > on how strongly the impressions of them stick with me. > Your mileage may vary. > > 1.
