Back when I lived in Malibu, the guy who lived in the apartment underneath mine
was a mechanic specializing in flash cars. Every day he'd drive a new
Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, or similar beast home and park it in our
garage. He used to joke about the owners, who he characterized as having paid
for the cars they owned by having had to forfeit 1 IQ point for every $10,000
the cars cost them. Since most of these cars cost $150,000-$200,000, that's a
lot of lost IQ points.

The only owner he spoke highly of was Miles Davis, whose Ferrari he worked on
often. It wasn't that he actually liked Miles (he was more into headbanger
music), but he liked working on the car because, in his words, I can stay high
for a week just on the amount of cocaine that Miles spills and leaves on his
car seats.  :-)

If you owned a camera, I guess you'd have posted a snapshot. It's beginning

Man what a story! When did you live in Malibu?

Sometime in the late 1980s, I think (I'm really, really bad with remembering
years). I lived there for a couple of years, in a nice apartment with a couple
of other Rama student roommates, while commuting into Santa Monica for work as
a nerd.

Malibu was a strange and wonderful community at the time, home to pretty much
equal amounts of obscenely rich people from the TV and movie industries (my
nearby neighbors included Shirley Maclaine, Jackson Browne, and a bunch of
other actors and actresses) and not-terribly-rich cool people who just lived
there because at the time you could find reasonable rentals. The community was
weird in itself, half a mile wide and twenty miles long, and when you'd go out
to bars you'd wind up hob-knobing with whoever happened to be there, be they
famous or not.

Suffice it to say that I was one of the not-rich inhabitants, but you couldn't
help but run into them. I remember one day I had to go to the hardware store in
Malibu Village. I parked my car and was walking to the door when this VISION
rode up on a motor scooter. The vision was wearing a full-length, beautifully
embroidered Russian Cossack coat and fur hat, with a sword stuck in his belt.
As I watched, the vision parked his scooter, hopped off, and I finally noticed
that it was Larry Hagman, who everybody local knew lived across the street in
the prestigious Malibu Colony. He walked up to the auto-detect sliding glass
doors of the hardware store, and just as he got within range of its radar
detectors, raised his hands above his head in a wizard-like gesture and shouted
SHAZAM! at the top of his lungs. The doors opened, and he walked in. I was
later told that he really loved to show up at the stores in the Village dressed
in odd costumes.

I was thinking that earlier in the week with all the quakes and mudslides going
on.

My sister lives near Frisco, she hates earthquakes, I point out that it's a
stupid place to live in that case, she says she likes the vineyards and beaches
too much to move..

They might not feel that way if they had ever been in a really big earthquake.
That experience really erodes one's belief in the concept of terra firma.

Back in 1960, I was living in Morocco, because my father was stationed there. A
friend who had his pilot's license talked me into joining him as we rented a
Piper Cub and flew off from Ben Guerir AFB (the base where we lived, near
Marrakech) to Agadir. We landed on a small strip next to the beach there, and
were drinking beer on the beach when the quake hit.

I think it's still rated in the Top 30 or 40 killer earthquakes of all time.
I remember the experience vividly. Although it was technically a moderate quake
(only 5.7 on the Richter scale), it was shallow and located right under the
city. The ground started shaking so badly that we couldn't stand, and were
being thrown around like puppets on a string. At one point I vividly remember
seeing a wave (earthquakes are, after all, nothing more than waves moving
through the earth) coming down the beachside road at us. The asphalt of the
road was literally rising about 3-4 feet in the air, and then traveling at
great speed towards us. When each wave got to us, they would toss us up into
the air like we were rag dolls.

My most vivid memory is watching a 12-story hotel next to us fall down. Its
four walls fell outwards, and the floors just stacked up like cards.

When the shaking stopped, we ran for the plane and took off and flew home,
because even though we were young we'd been around the science block enough to
know that there might be a tsunami, and we didn't want to be on the beach if
one arrived (it didn't). Nonetheless, the city was basically destroyed. Some
photos of what it looked like (we went back to check it out a few weeks later)
can be found here:

The strongest quake I've experienced in the Bay Area (I wasn't living
here for Loma Prieta) was a 4.0 which was like a train roaring through
my living room. It knocked stuff off shelves at the store at the top of
the hill. I had also experienced a 5.0 but the difference was the 5.0
was up in the hills near Clear Lake (50 miles away) and the 4.0 was
centered a mile from my house on a fault they didn't know existed.

I don't have a link, but I read a couple of days ago that the Yellowstone
geologists have said the swarms almost certainly do not presage a volcanic
eruption.

(I know, I know, it's a conspiracy to keep the truth from us so we won't try
to flee and will just die.)

Okay then, is the Ring of Fire becoming active? There was an 8.2 quake off
Chile and Yellowstone is beginning to have swarms (all bets are off if that
turns into a volcano). Better be practicing asanas so you can kiss your ass
good-bye.

The seismologists over have been predicting for the next BIG ONE, for several
years now, here in San Francisco, CA. But it hasn't happened yet. Now, I'm
thinking of buying a piece of land near Austin, Nevada as a hedge just in case
this prediction comes true, sooner or later.

Jesus, yes I'm sure anyone would re-evaluate their situation in the face of
something like that.

I would actually like to experience a big quake just to have my feelings about
terra firma challenged, if it wasn't for the death and destruction obviously.
Must have been horrific.

The wikipedia page paints a strong picture of it.

My sister lives near Frisco, she hates earthquakes, I point out that it's a

Little shakers may be a relative term. When the Loma Prieta earthquake
happened in October 1989, my dad saw the walls of the house shake for about a
minute or so. Luckily, he was safe and the house was not damaged.

At that time, I was still living in Seattle and was watching the World Series
when the programming was interrupted due to the shaker. But I was in Seattle
during the big earthquake over there in 2001 (I think that was the year, as I
recall). I remember our office building was swaying back and forth and we were
at the 32nd floor. I hid underneath my desk. Thankfully, our building did not
sustain any damages, except for a few streaks if cracked paint in the emergency
stair well. However, an old red brick building at the Pioneer Square sustained
some damages.

Maybe you are just JELLOS. Go figure.

Better be practicing asanas so you can kiss your ass
good-bye.

Major quakes tend to occur by frequency.

Little shakers may be a relative term. When the Loma Prieta
earthquake happened in October 1989, my dad saw the walls of the house
shake for about a minute or so. Luckily, he was safe and the house
was not damaged.

At that time, I was still living in Seattle and was watching the World
Series when the programming was interrupted due to the shaker. But I
was in Seattle during the big earthquake over there in 2001 (I think
that was the year, as I recall). I remember our office building was
swaying back and forth and we were at the 32nd floor. I hid
underneath my desk. Thankfully, our building did not sustain any
damages, except for a few streaks if cracked paint in the emergency
stair well. However, an old red brick building at the Pioneer Square
sustained some damages.

I've been sayin' it might be another 20-25 years before a big one
here as the faults have settled for awhile. So all we will get is a
few little shakers.

The seismologists over have been predicting for the next BIG ONE, for
several years now, here in San Francisco, CA. But it hasn't happened

as a hedge just in case this prediction comes true, sooner or later.

I was thinking that earlier in the week with all the quakes and

My sister lives near Frisco, she hates earthquakes, I point out that
it's a stupid place to live in that case, she says she likes the
vineyards and beaches too much to move..

Well,I guess if you did anything worth reporting we'd have heard
about it. If you owned a camera, I guess you'd have posted a
snapshot. It's beginning to look like you don't get out much - I
did see the photo you sent of visiting Starbucks one day a few
months ago. Maybe you don't own a camera; maybe you don't know
