Thank you everyone for your help and prayers!
 Yesterday I went over to
my sister's to help her implement all your wonderful
 suggestions,
(another one we got off-list was to spray my
 sister's urine around the
perimeter of the house!). I began combing my
 sister's yard, and her
adjacent neighbor's yards armed with cat kibble to
 shake. Connie was
anxious to distribute fliers and knock on doors so
 she interrupted me to
join her in that. Now of course I wish I had
 continued, but she was so
upset and thought the way to get Tux back was to
 enlist the help of
other humans. I agree, but I think your good
 thoughts and the help of
ACs was even more valuable, (thank you Hideyo for
 all the contacts).
Anyway, as I was driving home, my sister called me
 to tell me Tux had
been found!!! I was so relieved I burst into tears.
  We had confined
her other cat to Connie's bedroom and opened most of
 the doors and
windows in case Tux found his way home. When she
 opened her bedroom
door, Sam scooted out and Connie dashed around in a
 panic shutting the
house back up, (poor Connie!). When everything was
 quiet again, she
heard a little meow. She looked over at Sam playing
 quietly and
listened intently. Again the little meow. She
 followed it to the
attached garage door, and there was little Tux!
 Dirty, hungry, and very
relieved. He'd been hiding in the garage for 3
 days. She said they
must have checked the garage 10 times, but the
 little stinker is an
excellent hider. What we got from the ACers made
 sense too. It was
mighty dark in there, (thank you Marylyn), and there
 was old lumber and
concrete that he very well could have been hiding
 under, (thank you Mary
 and Marylyn!).

Hooray! It's so nice to have a happy ending. What
 would I do without
 all of you!

OT: help-removing carpet due to kitty urine

2006-03-28 Thread wendy
Hi guys,

Well, my husband and I have finally decided to remove
the carpet in the living room, hallway, and kitty
room due to them urinating on it. It has gotten so
bad that it actually is showing stains, which usually
only comes after MULTIPLE instances of urinating on
it. The house does not smell good and we are
embarrassed to have anyone over right now. Mainly the
problem is due to our 17 yr. old kitty who has
hyperthyroidism, and was never an inside cat until 2
years ago. We are looking into faux wood laminate
flooring, which looks like it will cost around $3000
installed through Lowe's. I haven't priced Home Depot
or any of the local floor stores yet, so hopefully, we
can get a much better deal than that. After we remove
the carpet and before the new flooring goes down,
we're going to seal the concrete floors, since
concrete is porous and the kittys will still be able
to smell the urine even after the new floors are
installed if we don't seal them. I am having to talk
my husband into this type of flooring, because he
wants tile, but I don't want it because it's cold on
my feet and just 'cold' looking. I'd rather have
carpet, but we're not going to go there again. Does
anyone here have any advice, suggestions, etc.
regarding this new excursion we're about to embark on?
Has anyone had the same problems? Did you change
your flooring out? How has that worked? Is there a
particular flooring that does best if exposed to kitty
urine? Any ideas on keeping the kitties from going on
the new flooring?

Thanks so much!
:)

badly and guilty and not being able to give them a
 bigger place - so I
thought and though for several months and found a
way to give them a bit
more space.. I cut one of the bedroom in half - I
 hired someone and
created a divider in the room with plexi glass and
 screen so that they
can see the other side of the room and they can also
 get air in the room
 - so now, the new space is connected to the room
 (bathroom they were
originally in) so they have twice as much as the
 space they were in
before. I also put a big cat condo/tower so that
 they can climb up and
downs and see the view from a new window (they also
 have one window and
cat condo in the original space, too) --- Tsubomi is
 more outgoing.. so
she has been climbing up and downs since yesterday,
 and she also can see
other kitties and me all the time, through the
 screen and plexi glass as
the room is facing to the hallway and the room where
 a lot of other
kitties hang out... On the other hand, ginger is
 freaked out because of
the noise from building stuff yesterday and the fact
 that now there is
new space.. she has been hiding since yesterday. I
 am praying that she
will come out and start playing in a new room with
 Tsubomi -

This is sort of stuff that just satisfies me - but I
 wanted to share
because this is something that I wanted to do for
 such a long time ever
since I got ginger a year and half ago and now my
 dream sort of came
 true...

OT: I adopted a new kitty; looks just like Cricket

2006-03-28 Thread wendy
Hi guys,

Well, I finally went back to the shelter yesterday
morning, while my dogs were being snip-snipped at the
vets, and adopted that little black kitty that stole
my heart weekend before last. I haven't named her
yet, but she is precious. When I first met her, and
subsequently thought about her all week, I knew she
was black like Cricket, but didn't realize how much
she favored Cricket until I got her home and spent the
day with her. Her face is shaped the same. She has
the same soft fur and long, fluffy black tail, and is
just shaped the same as he was. It's REALLY weird.
Even my husband said something about it. The vet said
she's about six months old, but I'm not so sure she's
that old. Cricket died five months ago this Thursday.
I'm not saying that this is Cricket reincarnated,
because it's so hard for me to wrap my mind around
something like that, but I'm not saying it's not
either.

This kitty is such a love and will bless our home. I
noticed she has tapeworms yesterday, so I gave her a
quarter pill of those pills you can get from the feed
store for dog tapeworms. That's what I usually use,
and had some left over from last year. Otherwise, she
seems very healthy, and gets along as if she has both
her eyes instead of one. I have to get her shots and
get her spayed in a month, so I will probably have her
tested for FeLV at that time as well. But I'm sure
there are many of you out there who understand me when
I say part of me just wants to forgo that FeLV test,
and not know if she is, you know? Ignorance is bliss.
I guess that would be irresponsible though, as she
would need special care, although all my kitties eat
healthy and get their vitamins.

Anyway, I am very happy about this new addition to our
home, and I just wanted to share it with you guys, who
can appreciate it the most.

Thanks for listening!
:)

Re: help-removing carpet due to kitty urine

2006-03-28 Thread Marylyn
First find OdoBan and really clean the carpet that is down. Use 2-3 times
the strength recommended. When you do take the carpet up, do the same to
the concrete. This stuff will take the odor out of anything. Someone threw
a dead ?? in my trash can that stayed there, in water, for several
weeks. Couldn't even figure out what the poor animal was by the time I
discovered it. I poured a lot of this stuff into the can and it handled the
smell. It handles the smell of an angry cat spraying too. It is that good.
I know you can get it at Sam's Club. I don't know about other places but it
is on the internet.

Second consider using a sealed ceramic tile over electric radiant heat.
That was not an option for me at one point so I painted the concrete. With
a couple of washable throw rugs it did nicely. You can do any type of
design you like. But stay away from carpet. When you take it up you will
find out how nasty it is. The padding turns to dust.

This one trips me out but, according to friends who know a lot more about

body of another little one. Especially at that age. Seems like some how

Re: OT: help-removing carpet due to kitty urine

2006-03-28 Thread Sheila208
Wendy, I replaced the carpet in my hallway and living room two years ago with very expensive wood laminate and I have been miserable ever since. It looks great when you first put it down, but you can't let the kitties pee on it or mop it with soap and water. If the kitties do have an accident you have to get it up (immediately) with a damp mop. If they make a mess during the night or when you are away from home and can't get to it right away you are gonna have big problems. I had to mop mine with soap and bleach to feel like it was clean and sanitary and now I have a big mess the seams have buckled and the laminate is peeling a part. I hate to admit it but your hubby is right. I have done a lot of research and it looks like tile is the best solution for us pet lovers. Sheila

 Cricket

  Hi guys,

Well, I finally went back to the shelter yesterday
morning, while my dogs were being snip-snipped at
 the
vets, and adopted that little black kitty that
 stole
my heart weekend before last. I haven't named her
yet, but she is precious. When I first met her,
 and
subsequently thought about her all week, I knew
 she
was black like Cricket, but didn't realize how
 much
she favored Cricket until I got her home and spent
 the
day with her. Her face is shaped the same. She
 has
the same soft fur and long, fluffy black tail, and
 is
just shaped the same as he was. It's REALLY
 weird.
Even my husband said something about it. The vet
 said
she's about six months old, but I'm not so sure
 she's
that old. Cricket died five months ago this
 Thursday.
I'm not saying that this is Cricket reincarnated,
because it's so hard for me to wrap my mind around
something like that, but I'm not saying it's not
  either.

This kitty is such a love and will bless our home.
  I
noticed she has tapeworms yesterday, so I gave her
 a
quarter pill of those pills you can get from the
 feed
store for dog tapeworms. That's what I usually
 use,
and had some left over from last year. Otherwise,
 she
seems very healthy, and gets along as if she has
 both
her eyes instead of one. I have to get her shots
 and
get her spayed in a month, so I will probably have
 her
tested for FeLV at that time as well. But I'm
 sure
there are many of you out there who understand me
 when
I say part of me just wants to forgo that FeLV
 test,
and not know if she is, you know? Ignorance is
 bliss.
I guess that would be irresponsible though, as she
would need special care, although all my kitties
 eat
  healthy and get their vitamins.

Anyway, I am very happy about this new addition to
 our
home, and I just wanted to share it with you guys,
 who
  can appreciate it the most.

  Thanks for listening!

I have hard wood, and it takes a LOT of water to make it
buckle. It's got a finish on it, and yes, the claws racing around
the house *does* scratch it up. It's superficial scratches, but then
who wants to have their hard wood re-varnished (well finished) every
couple of years. Wonder about those people at Lowes though - we're
talking SOAKED with water to make it buckle.. Course if you want
something impenetrable - ceramic tile.

Dear Wendy, looks like you have got some good insights on this -
The flooring of my house is combinations of hardwood floor, carpet,
tiles and bricks - when I converted the garage to a living quarter - I

floor - the main reason to chose bricks were - more expensive than some
other options, easy to clean (as long as you coated them) and it keeps
the room warmer during the winter time and keep it cool in summer time.

:)

Re: OT: help-removing carpet due to kitty urine

2006-03-28 Thread Lewis Faye
I agree with Sheila. I had the same problem with actual hardwood. With multiple pets, tile is one of the better options. The problem is you must always clean up immediately. My previous dog withliver issues urinated on a cat toy. I didn't see the accident and had not idea it was there. The urine molded in a few days and ruined those planks. It was awful. I have heard many dreadful tales about laminate flooring and pets. People love it when it is new but when the accidents begin, look out for serious trouble. If you must go with a wood type thing, look into bamboo flooring. I have no experience with this but it has been recommended on other pet boards I visit. I have no idea of the cost but I suspect it isn't cheap. Re: Ember

2006-03-28 Thread Lance
Thanks to all of you for your comforting words. I really appreciate
them. I'm also glad you liked Ember's pictures. Our family has had
several black cats over the years, but Ember was our first fluffy,
black kitty. About a year after I adopted Ember in Madison, my
parents took in Sidney, who looks like a giant Ember with a longer
tail. Bonnie, when the Sun shines on Ember, I can see very dark
brown, along with her stripes. Wendy, Cricket's pictures are great.
He was a beautiful kitty. I especially liked the bad Cricket
picture. Sometimes they're at their best when they're making mischief.

I'm finally getting used to keeping Ember isolated, and I think she
is too. It never caused her much stress. I'm finding that having her
by herself allows me to monitor food/water/litterbox habits better
than if she was out and about. She does sometimes wake up at night,
seemingly with the intent to get into something. I need to pick up a
few more toys that we can play with together. Since the boys tested
negative, I'd worry a lot less about them (especially since they're
now vaccinated) than I would that Ember might pick up something from
our outdoor cat. I'll talk to the vet about this to see what he thinks.

Wendy, I would definitely like your FeLV post collection. The info
that you, Nina and others have given me has been very helpful.
Congrats on adopting the little girl. You'll have to post some
pictures soon. Take care, all.

Electric coils are run under the tile/wood whatever. It heats the floor and
the heat rises. Great system and supposedly easy enough to install. I have
friends who have done it themselves. This would solve the cold problem. I
have one friend who put it in the bathroom (didn't like stepping on tile
fresh out of the shower). It is not as expensive as it sounds.

to smell the urine even after the new floors are
installed if we don't seal them. I am having to
talk
my husband into this type of flooring, because he
wants tile, but I don't want it because it's cold
on
my feet and just 'cold' looking. I'd rather have
carpet, but we're not going to go there again.
Does
anyone here have any advice, suggestions, etc.
regarding this new excursion we're about to embark
on?
Has anyone had the same problems? Did you change
your flooring out? How has that worked? Is there
a
particular flooring that does best if exposed to
kitty
urine? Any ideas on keeping the kitties from
going on
 the new flooring?

 Thanks so much!
 :)
 Wendy

Re: OT: Prayer for Philmore

2006-03-28 Thread Marylyn

As long as he is eating he is doing well. My
prayers are with him and all others fighting illnesses.and their
people. It is so hard to watch a close friend like Philmore in bad health
and being unable to do anything about it. Urge your friend to pamper him,
give him anything to eat he wants etc. His person will be very glad when
his days are done.

  Hi, I wanted to ask
if I could ask for your prayer for my friend’s cat, Philmore who is not doing
  too well.
  Philmore has had a
big tumor under his jaw for the past several months now and is getting harder
and harder for him to eat and breathe –his time maybe approaching, but we are
not 100% sure as he can still eat, and he is such a fighter and such a good
boy– and I wanted to ask you to pray for Philmore so that he will not be in
pain and will be in peace regardless

  Thank
  you.

Re: OT: help-removing carpet due to kitty urine

2006-03-28 Thread Marylyn

Bamboo is not nearly as expensive as it was a few
years ago. I had several dealers recommend it to me because of the pet
issue and for bathrooms where there is a lot of moisture. There are some
pretty descent lumber discount places. Lumber Liquidator (especially if
you have one in driving distance) has sales frequently. I'm still sold on
the tile thing. However, I am putting pine floors inmy house and
plan tohave them finishedwith tung oil. Go figure.

I agree with Sheila. I had the same problem with actual
hardwood. With multiple pets, tile is one of the better options.
The problem is you must always clean up immediately. My previous dog
withliver issues urinated on a cat toy. I didn't see the accident
and had not idea it was there. The urine molded in a few days and ruined
  those planks. It was awful.

I have heard many dreadful tales about laminate flooring and pets.
People love it when it is new but when the accidents begin, look out for
  serious trouble.

If you must go with a wood type thing, look into bamboo flooring. I
have no experience with this but it has been recommended on other pet boards I
visit. I have no idea of the cost but I suspect it isn't cheap.

Wendy, I replaced the carpet in my hallway and living
room two years ago with very expensive wood laminate and I have been
miserable ever since. It looks great when you first put it down, but you
can't let the kitties pee on it or mop it with soap and water. If the
kitties do have an accident you have to get it up (immediately) with a damp
mop. If they make a mess during the night or when you are away from home and
can't get to it right away you are gonna have big problems. I had to mop
mine with soap and bleach to feel like it was clean and sanitary and now I
have a big mess the seams have buckled and the laminate is peeling a part. I
hate to admit it but your hubby is right. I have done a lot of research and
it looks like tile is the best solution for us pet lovers.

Re: Jackson Co Shelter, MI selling pets for research?

PLEASE...Some specific eye witness examples that other can visit and

to being kept in a small cage with nooutside windows for years...(many no
  kill shelters)

What in the world could a sheriff do??? Arrest the people doing
research?? HA!!
Animal testing in research labs IS LEGAL
Immoral, but not illegal.

Also, research facilities don't give "tours" for the curious.
People can't just "pop in".

Also, I will not compromise anyone that has been involved in these "back
door" rescues...
Not the employees, risking their jobs, nor the receiving shelter(s).

Experiments that I've seen animals subjected to
1) Alternative methods to surgical castration. (NOT a pretty
sight)
2) Puppies bred in facilities, only to have their eyes "removed". (For what
purpose?? Gee, they couldn't tell us, hell, they couldn't see us!!)
3) Dogs whose limbs have been repeatedly broken, re-set, then broken
again.
4) Dogs cats with intentional malignant growths
And so much more..

So, I've seen it. It happens. It's legal.
And, it is NOT just being confined to a small cage for crying out
loud!!

It's fricking torture and abuse, all in the name of science!
We are supposed to be a civilized society, yet no one flinches at what we
do to God's sentinent creatures.
Yet, they raise holy hell at the idea of stem cell research!!
This society is a bunch of hypocritical zealots, that's for sure!!
It's ok to torture animals, but heaven forbid, don't even talk about stem
cells.. Chrimminy!
Shame on us!!

And, not ALL No-Kill shelters are like Angel Wings. That was a
travesty.
There are MANY legitimate sanctuaries/shelters where the animals are NOT
confined to cages/kennels.
In fact, the shelter I'm associated with is on a 22 acre farm. The
majority of dogs can run. Even the aggressive dogs have an open area to
run sun themselves. The cats ALL have outside enclosed
areas..
There is a barnyard with a large pond for the pigs, goats fowl.
A vet tech there 24/7.
Veterinarians are there 3-4 week.
NO animal is denied medical care, no matter what the cost.
Animals are NOT euthanized due to aggression, disease
They are ALL given a second chance at life.
Including those fortunate to escape the labs.

And, I still stand by my previous statement.
HUMANE EUTHANASIA is a much better alternative for animals than to face
laboratory research.
Hell, I even think humane euthanasia should be a choice given to terminal
humans.
(Unless they partake in abusing animals, then I'd like to see them spend
their last days being tortured/experimented upon in a research facility, all in
the name of "science". YEP!! With no kind soul trying to usher them out
the back door either...)

I've been around a long time. I have seen more than most.
I've been to puppy mills, assisted with raids on some. (Chalk one up for
the good guys!)
Been to livestock auction houses, looking for "living" animals on the
downed animal piles.
Been to "factory farms".
Been in research labs at teaching facilities.
Been in HIGH KILL shelters, where euthanasia is an old-fashioned gas
chamber.or a shotgun. (Ky)

Until you SEE THE HORRORS WITH YOUR OWN EYES, ONE WILL NEVER
"GET IT".
No excuse in the world can ever justify the pain horror we, as
humans, inflict on innocent creatures. None.
And, I will not apologize for stating my personal feelings.
I am bitter, and jaded. Comes with the territory.
But, I will say one thing. I am a GOOD person. I have spent the
majority of my life fighting for the causes I believe in. I've sacrificed
a lot, but have no regrets if by doing so, I have been able to help even just
one soul.
And, I am older, but not ready to throw in the towel.
Just trying to find some fresh, new blood to pass the torch to.
I've taught my daughter well. She has grown into a compassionate
young woman, active in animal rights and humane animal education.
I will keep "fighting the good fight".
Call me a dreamer, but I hope one day, the "good guys" win.
