I'm just at a loss as to what to do. I don't know of any other vets in my

to do it as part of the sale of the practice. But she just does not seem

Probably true, but you could get copies of all the tests your vet has run and
avoid repeating at least a few of them. I don't know. With what I've been
going through with changing vets I'm appalled at how different they are in how
they approach things.

For example my old vet said bloodwork was fine, but my new vet said bloodwork
pointed to the beginnings of crf and ran additional bloodwork that turned out
that she was correct. (Bloodwork within 1 week's difference)...

Sometimes it is hard to completely diagnose what is going on with a cat with
leukemia. There are so many factors to consider. Not to mention, sometimes
the symptoms may point to too many things instead of narrowing it down. I
recently lost one of my cats to a tumor in the eye and nasal cavity. She
started getting sick earlier this spring, but we didn't find out about the
tumor until it was too late. This was no ones fault. We, the vet and I,
ran a lot of test, had her in for exams at least 3 times a month. We tried
many medications but nothing helped her to get better. The vet really cared
and wasn't just trying to make money. But the symptoms weren't enough, nor
were the blood tests. It sounds like Whisper could have Herpes. This is
common with FeLV+ and is usually treatable. But, once again, the symptoms
for herpes are also the same for other diseases/viruses. Basically I am
just trying to say that it may seem as if all the vet cares about is money,
but this may not be the case. I would do some research on the web about
Whisper's symptoms and then talk with the vet again and see what he says
about what you found out.

Yes, if you go this route ask for a full thyroid panel. There is a 'basic'
test. I don't remember which one.. which can come out negative when
your cat really does have a thyroid problem.

The test is called a T4, and some vets also take a free T4. I don't know what
else to tell you about the weight loss. Did your vet offer any other possible
explanations? You could try to introduce the Evo back slowly as you said. If
she has another reaction, maybe she has an allergy to something in the food,
which would be good for you to know.

Subject: Ember and weight loss

Ember went to the vet today for a CBC. We go roughly every three
months. For the last eight or nine months, Ember has been losing
weight. This particular problem started around last Christmas, when
Ember developed diarrhea, and I had no idea of how to get rid of it.
Pumpkin helped a little, but I was reluctant to try anything else,
especially since it really didn't seem to be an infection. I decided
to take Ember off of Innova EVO dry, and the diarrhea almost promptly
went away.

Since then, Ember has been dropping weight. She's lost about 1.8
pounds since that time until today, when she weighed 9.5 pounds. Now,
this might be my fault. I hope it is, as that would be the easiest
thing to fix. I've only been giving her a can of EVO a day for most
of the time, and that might not be enough. In the last few weeks,
I've also given her two cans of Sheba a week as treats.

Ember's CBC was normal, which, in her case, means good red blood cell
count, and just below normal white blood cell count. The vet doesn't
think that this is thyroid-related, but I might have her run that
test on Ember in a few weeks.

Ember eats well (especially the Sheba). She is playful and loving as
always. Should I try a brand new bag of EVO dry to see what adding
that back might do? I would add that *very slowly*. Would it be okay
for me to bump up Sheba, and has anyone fed much Sheba? The vet
wanted Ember to come back in to be weighed in a few weeks, but I'd
rather do that at home. Is there a postal or baby scale with which
anyone here has had good results?

Thank you,

Lance

In my experience though, coccidia gets really bad, really fast. i.e. the
kittens are basically dripping diarrheaThey get it on their rear ends
and back legs and have to be bathed frequently, etcThey don't make it to

are often born with coccidia as well. When you've dealt with it you can

With soft stools a lot of times it's giardia. I think a fecal is a good

I have heard not to test for fiv less than 6 months. You can test for felv any
time, And at anytime they could have just been exposed and may test negative in
3-6 months after exposure. That's at any age, although positive kittens who
had a known positive mother are less likely to throw the virus. Kittens less

one of them--fortunately there are quite a few around here. If not, almost all
vets have after-hours number so you can call your clinic and talk to whomever
has weekend duty.

Or you could try the nearest PetSmart if there are any near you. All the ones
around here have a vet clinic attached (Banfield) and stay open later than
regular vets.

Most kittens have worms so that may be the problem.

FreeT4 is the test you want to do if there is any possibility of the T4
being incorrect. Fred's T4 was normal but his FreeT4 showed he was in
the early stages of hyperthyroid, so we caught it early and he only
needed a very low dose of iodine when he had the treatment and I got to
bring him home the next day.

Can you syringe pedialyte?
I am NOT a kitten expert by any means...agree with ER suggestion but also
suggesting fluids to keep the kitten hydrated since diarrhea is
dehydratingI am sure you know to be careful s/he doesn't aspirate...good
luck. Diarrhea can be scarey

   Hi all,
  Okay, here is the deal:
I rescued a mama with 5 kittens (4 weeks old) at a kill shelter.
One of the kittens doesn't look so good seems a little lethargic and seen
some runny poop on it's butt.
Others are doing well and eating.
I've only had these kittens and mom for 2 days.
What can I do for this kitten?
Mama was tested (negative) and vaccinated/de-wormed when she came into the
shelter 2 days prior to me getting them.
  Thanks guys!
As I look up to you for info!

Re: felv+ cat with adenocarcinoma

2007-10-06 Thread kris
Thanks for the link - I will definitely check it out. I am also hooked up with
another pet cancer support group, but they, too, have little experience with
the cancer. There is all kinds of info about lymphoma, but nothing on
adenocarcinoma. The vets even said there is so little data out there that they
cannot even give me an idea what the chances of remission are. Anyway, sorry
to hear about your kitties :( I do remember you talking about Bailey before
when I was on the list last year.

I do know that it is a slow-moving cancer, but have not been able to get what
stage or phase it's in. I have a whole load of questions for the oncologist
this coming Friday. My biggest problem right now is that I can't get her
appetite up. We tried cyproheptadine, which did help, but not even close to
what prednisone has done in the past. I'm going to talk to the doc tomorrow
about pred. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the help!

RE: FeLV Help for a 5 year old male cat

2007-10-06 Thread kris
I am wondering what Whisper's RBC/packed cell volume is. I am also wondering
if the drooling you are describing is thick, stringy saliva? If so, this is
possibly an indication of dehydration. When we discovered our cat was felv+,
she had the classic anemia leading to lethargy and unwillingness to eat. This
was addressed with ONLY prednisone injection and pills, which pushed the virus
into remission and she was perfectly healthy for about 2 1/2 yrs., had a mild
bout with anemia, then another severe bout with anemia about 6 months after
that. This time they tried Depo-Medrol (we had moved and had another vet),
which did NOTHING. We also tried Interferon, which did nothing. I insisted on
another prednisolone injection, and she immediately went into remission again.
That was almost 4 years ago, and she hasn't come out of remission since. So
she's lived for over 7 years after being diagnosed positive. And she was 8
when she was diagnosed. Also, I was told that a first test for leukemia may
not be accurate and that a second should always be done. I don't remember if
that depends on the kind of test, or what. If it was me, I would do my own
research the best I could, ask questions, perhaps get a second opinion but
definitely pursue finding the cause. Personally, to me, it does sound like it
could be something other than leukemia. I wish you luck. I know the stress
you are under worrying about your kitty and what is best to do, and who to
trust.

Probably true, but you could get copies of all the tests your vet has run and
avoid repeating at least a few of them. I don't know. With what I've been
going through with changing vets I'm appalled at how different they are in
 how they approach things.

For example my old vet said bloodwork was fine, but my new vet said
bloodwork pointed to the beginnings of crf and ran additional bloodwork that
turned out that she was correct. (Bloodwork within 1 week's

I would do some research on the web about
Whisper's symptoms and then talk with the vet again and see what he says
 about what you found out.

we found out he has Leukemia. We never knew what was

About a year ago we took him to the vet, for vomiting

with out any treatment or even knowing some this was
wrong with him.We took him to the vet about a month or

start the treatments right a way. They gave us
