Would it be better for him to just stay on the Prednesolone? I have heard that also has side effects, though. Kelley Saveika [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Leukeran is a chemotherapy drug. He is back to his full dose of Prednisolone - 30mg / day. We will wait until the red blood cell count stabilizes and then begin the weaning process again. This time he will also be on Chlorambucil. Does anyone have any experience with this drug or have any other suggestions that may help Buzz? [Felvtalk] Kitten chronic loose stool
Hi all, My FeLV foster kitten, Daisy (about 14 weeks old now) has had soft stools, and sometimes uncontrollable diarrhea, ever since she was found in the street at 3 weeks. When I began fostering her about 5 weeks ago she had been taking meds for coccidia for several weeks without improvement. I took her to my vet, who has state of the art everything, including feces-testing methods, and he found that her coccidia had cleared up (it never actually goes away) and what she had was (bad) bacterial growth. He put her on a 3-meds treatment plan that included 5 days Panacure. She has control now, but her stool is still baby food consistency. My question is---have any of you ever used an exclusive diet of broiled or raw chicken to treat a *kitten's* diarrhea/loose stool? I've used it successfully with my former adult FeLV, Snoball, but I'm worried about the effects of an incomplete (albeit temporary) diet of this kind on a kitten. I'd also welcome hearing of any other successful ways that anyone may have found in treating kittens' loose stools. Thanks! Kerry M. _ IRS CIRCULAR 230 NOTICE. Re: [Felvtalk] Kitten chronic loose stool
One note on coccidia--I'm a remote volunteer for a shelter in Louisiana and they recently had some very young pups with Coccidia. They put them on Albon and it still wouldn't clear up. Then the vet used Marquis Paste instead and it seems to have really cleared it up. I've read a number of things which recommends the Marquis Paste over the Albon, particularly with resistant coccidia. Re: [Felvtalk] Kitten chronic loose stool
My Yoda (non-felv) as a baby had a lot of that intermittent diarrhea as a baby (the archives are peppered with my Yoda diarrhea emails!). I got so frustrated- trying everything- and unlike you, I had a stupid doc that just said, oh we didn't find anything in the fecal-- and I was like, well, you probably won't, so we just have to treat the symptoms! Ugh, sucked. Since I have done holistic care before I consulted with my holistic vet and she said try wrm clear- not sure how it's spelled on the bottle, but it's called worm clear. It's a holistic treatment- natural. She said it naturally clears worms, bacteria and can even work on coccidia and things like that. She said it also just generally helps the gut get back in order- balances out the good and bad bacteria. I used it on him for the 14 day course of treatment (there's also directions for a maintenance dose). The directions are a little funny- it talks about adding it to water, or deliverying into the mouth and after talking to her about it, I went with the 3 doses a day in the mouth so that I was sure he was getting it all. Comes in a bottle like a liquid eye med (don't get them confused!). It really worked on him honestly. It was weird b/c I couldn't ever get anything diagnosed, other than me thinking that he has a more fragile gastro tract b/c of his super rough start in life. It does act up sometimes- like when I switched him from Wellness canned to Eagle Pack canned (oh lordy, that was HELL! For everyone!)-- but I was really impressed with the wrm clear that first time I did the 14 day treatment on him. Nothing else had worked! It's definitely worth a try b/c unlike an actual medication, it won't do any harm-- it only helps! I got some bottles from my holistic vet, but I have also seen it online at the pet supply places. Hope this helps. Caroline K. Thanks Christhat's v interesting. Will add to the coccidia folder.
Thanks for this info Caroline--will be looking into this one. I'd never heard of it before. I like that it's safe too, and generally gets the gut back in order. Paws crossed! Kerry -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Caroline Kaufmann Sent: Tuesday, October 28, 2008 12:01 PM To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] Kitten chronic loose stool My Yoda (non-felv) as a baby had a lot of that intermittent diarrhea as a baby (the archives are peppered with my Yoda diarrhea emails!). The directions are a little funny- it talks about adding it to water, or deliverying into the mouth and! after talking to her about it, I went with the 3 doses a day in the mouth so that I was sure he was getting it all. Caroline K. Re: [Felvtalk] Buzzy still has hemolytic anemia
Jane, Thank you for your help. Buzz is not doing too badly, we caught it when his blood levels were in the twenties this time. Last time he was down to eight. We have been testing his blood every other week and I purchased a pet scale to monitor his weight more closely. I guess it is Leukeran that he will be on. That is what the pharmacies had. The Chlorambucil must be the generic. Dr. Tom gives me the name of the medication and the dosage and lets me call around to the pharmacies to find the best price. For 15 2mg tablets of Leuctra the price ranged from $49.44 to $77.99. Do you know if they can ever go off of the Leukeran once they are on it? Is hemolytic anemia something they can beat for good or will it keep coming back? Re: [Felvtalk] Buzzy still has hemolytic anemia
Hi Sue I can ask Hideyo ...hopefully I can get an answer for you tomorrow. I hope it is something that can be put into remission, but I am not sure. I know how much you care for Buzz and I am sure that he knows that ... a great immune system booster. When Me Me was in the throes of fighting a terrible upper respiratory, we used to do 15 minute intervals of bliss therapy throughout the day. She loved being combed and she would roll and around and purr deeply almost vibrate. I know this sounds nuts, but I am sure the sheer pleasure of being loved and cared for (she had been thrown from a car window onto the porch of a 'shelter' as a kitten) helped her immune system. We do everything we can to help them fight this virus. We know that ultimately they are on their own path, and that they will let us know when they want to let go. Hopefully Hideyo will be able to answer your questions. Give Buzz a buzz from us. Jane On Oct 28, 2008, at 8:02 PM, Sue Frank Koren wrote: Jane, Thank you for your help. My two positives, Squeaky and Stripes lived to ages 22 years and 16 years. Squeaky was never sick until his final three weeks of life after he was diagnosed with oral cancer. Stripes was sick on and off his entire life but nothing serious. Isabella was very sick 18 months ago. Has doubled her weight and is the PICTURE of health! She's somewhere between 2 and 5 years of age, estimated. [Felvtalk] tests
I'm getting real confused about the available tests and their accuracy. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I had to file a bankruptcy and can't afford testing. Is there someplace that can give me help? How hard is it going to be to place my rescued kittens in homes? What resources should I be using? ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org
Re: [Felvtalk] Buzzy still has hemolytic anemia
hi, glad you have a vet who will listen to all suggestions. you say Buzz snuggles with you, by any chance does he prefer legs? curious. my cats have always preferred to lay on top of my ankles or between my legs. hard to get out of bed in a hurry with 2 or 3 cats laying all over you. hope Buzz gets better soon. sorry i don't have anything on this new med. you might enter the name on search and see what comes up. dorlis Sue Frank Koren [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: My Buzz had anemia back in July and because of the advise of this group and my vet who is very proactive his life was saved. We have been slowly weaning him off of the Prednisolone for the past several months. He was down to 1/2 of a 5mg tablet one time a day. Unfortunately his red blood cell count began to drop again. He is back to his full dose of Prednisolone - 30mg / day. We will wait until the red blood cell count stabilizes and then begin the weaning process again. This time he will also be on Chlorambucil. Does anyone have any experience with this drug or have any other suggestions that may help Buzz? I have an excellent vet who is very open to suggestions and will research any possibilities thoroughly. Buzzy is the love of my life. He snuggles up with me every single night. I know the people in this group understand more then anyone else what this is like.
