Re: [Felvtalk] LTIC/Imulan Losing kitties

2008-12-01 Thread catatonya
Welcome to the group. I'm sorry for your loss, but thank you for taking in
positive cats. Unfortunately with this disease you just never know when or if
they are ever going to get sick from the felv. I have a 10 year old positive
here with me as I type right now. My first positive died around 8 years old.
Others have lived lives into the high teens. The bad thing about it is that
when it hits, it can hit fast, as you have discovered. I don't know about the
new med.s. My cat is asymptomatic, so I don't give her any medicines,
additives, etc just a good diet and a stress free (as possible)
environment. My girl DD was left at my vet's office and my vet talked me into
taking her because I already had a positive cat. Vet's call dropped off
animals door dumps and I named her DD because my first positive cat was CC
(because I found her living behind a coke machine). DD RULES my house. Your
positive cat could have many years ahead of her. I hope you'll consider
 taking in another positive. :)
  thank you!

Hello everyone,

I am new to this listserv, but wanted to thank all of you in advance
for your insights and kindness! I recently adopted 2 FeLV positive
cats, Neo and Parker (1 in April and 1 in September). I knew their
lives would be cut short by the illness, but wanted to give them a
happy, comfortable life before they left this world.

Some friends and family members have given us grief over purposely
adopting these sick kitties. I've heard things to the effect of You'll
be sad when they die to You're keeping a healthy cat from having a
home. But I didn't (and still don't care) what the naysayers have to
say. I know that I'm doing a good service to these cats that otherwise
would be euthanized before they needed to be or would be without a
loving home. Someone (who was in my corner) told me that she worked at
a shelter once and no one would even play with the FeLV cats, let alone
adopt them. This solidified my belief for the need of loving homes of
these forgotten felines! Their happiness is more important than my
sadness, as profound as it may be.

I'm saddened to report that baby Parker (who we got more recently in
September) died on November 8th. It was a sad death as he suddenly
collapsed and died a couple of hours later in our home. It was late at
night and the emergency vet closest to us was in surgery. Other vet
services were an hour or more away. We saw him take his last few
breaths and wanted to end his suffering sooner (but couldn't). But he
died knowing (hopefully) that he was loved and that he didn't die
alone. He was the sweetest cat ever! :(

Our other cat, Neo is doing great! He's not showing any symptoms, has
put on weight since we got him, and has a strong appetite! I recently
read about LTIC/Imulan and told my vet about it. He didn't know too
much about it as it's a newer medication, but I asked him to order some
for Neo. It's quite expensive, but if I would have known about it
sooner I would have tried it on little baby Parker to help him. Since
Neo is quite healthy, I'm not sure what effect it will have on him, but
I'd do anything to keep him as healthy as we can for as long as we can.
I'd be most pleased if anyone tries this with their cat and could tell
me how it works out. Also, did your cat have any symptoms before or
were they asymptomatic before starting treatment?

Thanks for reading and for all that you do for your beloved cats!

Amber

That's amazing. As you've stated, you never really know how long you'll have
with them.
What cute names you've chosen for your felines! I don't know if I mentioned it
before, but I got my second cat (that died recently) from our vet as well. They
rescued him and suggested that I may want to take him in because I already had
a FeLV positive cat. They were just as upset as I was when Parker passed away.
My vet buried him in his yard and got him a headstone. He was one loved kitty!

I do plan on taking in another positive someday (hopefully sooner rather
than later!). I need a little bit more time to adjust to the loss of Parker,
but want to rescue another one. I've been looking at this group's adoption page
as well as Petfinder (under special needs cats) to see what next cat may need
my help. Thanks again for your support and response.

Ask Parker to send you the right one..honest. A month after Dixie
left this world, she sent me a kitten from the same pine thicket she
came fromhe was very little so, two weeks later, she sent me
another...they are 6 months old and weigh in at around 8 1/2
pounds apiece.well, they were little when she picked them
out. Parker will send you the right cat or cats if you ask him. The
cat may not be what you think you want but it will definitely be
exactly the right little fellow.

Enjoy the time you have. No one, not person or cat or mouse, is
guaranteed a minute of life. If we spend all our time wondering when
we or our friends may leave, we will deprive ourselves of their
happiness and wisdom and we will prevent them from loving us and
teaching us. We all die some times and we all die from something.
The idea is to enjoy all of life as much as possible and not to fear
death. I know. It is almost impossible but I have learned from Mai
Mai PG, the Royal Princess Kitty Katt, and my wonderful Dixie Louise.
Please try to learn and love without fear.

My 6 year old FeLV cat ( Silver chan) has just been diagnosed with lyphoma in
the chest, , he has fliud arround his lungs and is breathing faster, but that
was the only symptom I saw, so I am quite shocked!  I would like to know what
 treatments have helped you kitty`s live longer, they gave me two options;
Chlorambucil and prednisone, or L- Asparaginase/vincristine/prednisone. I had
a lyphoma kitty before, I think I saw her condition much later, she had lost
alot of weight and had the chemo with vincristine , but she didn`t do well on
it and got amenia and the lymphoma came back and she died within two months!
So I am very scared, especially as my cat now seems well , but I know he
needs help with the fluid in his chest, the vet drained one side today, but
couldn`t get any from the other side out. your advice would be greatly
 appreciated!  Amanda in Japan.

Re: [Felvtalk] After Dental extraction - what to feed

2008-12-01 Thread dlgegg
when it comes to keeping track of blood/urine, i found a great litter box that
makes it easy to check for this. it comes in 3 pieces. top which has
safflower seed in it (like you feed the birds). the urine drains thru a 2nd
layer which is slanted all sides to a hole where it drains into a collection
box. a lady invented it for her diabetic cat to make testing easier on her and
her cat. it is called Smart Cat Box. don't have web address handy, but smart
cat box should get you there. is a bit pricey ($60.00 including shipping), but
i think worth it. goint to get 2nd one for Annie. was able to see Homie's
urine was a bit dark, poured fresh sample into clean pill bottle, took to vet
and found had a trace of blood so she is now on clavamox . this way, can stop
something before it gets too bad. dorlis

The vet dentist had never seen blood in the urine after coming to - and he's
been doing this for 20+ years. He really specializes in just dental work so
he asked another vet on call and they thought perhaps she might have a UTI or
perhaps she has or had a stone which passed thus why there was a little
blood. He said it wasn't a lot but it concerned him because he'd never seen
it before. A lot or a little is concern for me.
She was already going to be on Amoxy so he said to just keep an eye on her
for the next couple days. She's also on buprenex for pain and she was on
Medicam for inflammation (which after reading up on the Medicam I wish I
hadn't give her the 2 doses I did) I wonder if the buprenex and/or amoxy are
causing her to lose her appetite as well. She must be in some discomfort, I
 know I would be.

I tried a/d yesterday and she only licked twice and was done.
This morning, after trying 4 different flavors, someone suggested syringe
feeding her. So I mixed some of the a/d with water and gave her some that
way - she didn't even fight with me about doing it. I didn't give her a lot
since I didn't really know how much would be too much/too little. A few hours
later I pureed some Sheba mixed with water - she was watching me do it so I
put a bowl with some of that down and she ate 1-2 tablespoons of that. I'm
just happy she ate something. Now if I can just get her to drink some water
but I figured if I keep mixing whatever food I give her with water,
hopefully, that will be enough to keep her hydrated. Thank you for asking
what KMR was, I didn't know either but think I might give that a try as well.
A few people now have suggested the juice from tuna so I'll probably pick
some of that up tomorrow and give that  try too.  It's just horrible when they
don't want to eat. I go back to work tomorrow so she'll be on her own all
day. I plan on leaving at least a few bowls of wet food for her and hopefully
she'll have eaten something when I get home.
Thanks for all your suggestions, I really appreciate it.
 Dawn

 Hi,
I haven't been here for awhile, but I do know about high fevers..Check the
archives on Bandy.   He was my baby...We dealt with high fever from the time
of his diag.until he passed.   We did all the usual things antibiotics,
 etc...without much results..
Anyway, every time his temp reached around 105 or 106 in the beginning, he
got a shot of dex and it would go right down within a few hours.  After
months of rushing to the vet for fluids and a shot, we decided to put him on
dex pills as needed...I could always tell when he was getting a temp, too.
So my vet wrote a script for dex. .75mg pills... I would give him 1/4 of this
pill if his temp got even to 103 then it would go down for wks at a time or a
least a wk.  If it were higher, then I would go ahead and give him the whole
pill. Within a few hours, he was perky and eating good again and just ready
to go..The bad thing with so much steroid use, is worrying if he would become
diabetic.  He had regular blood work though so that never was a problem for
 him.
Check with your vet to see if they might let you have some dex pills and use
 as needed.
Low dose prednisone didn't work for this either as we tried it...only the
 dex.
You can email me direct if you want.
Good luck to you and your kitty,
Kerry and Angel Bandy, Buster, Inky, Lil Rascal and Snoopy
