[Felvtalk] LTCI-Imulan
Hi, Has anyone tried LTCI by Imulan? Four days ago I started my cat Carl on this new med and was wondering what others experienced. I do not have experience because my cat died before this became readily available :-(.. However reports are good from a Vet's wife on another group. Her husband is a cat specailist and was originally involved in the studies for this immune booster. [Felvtalk] Hello - New to the group
Hello. My name is Jenny. I recently found out about this group and am so glad it exists. I really need any help or support any of you could give. There is a terrible shelter in West Bend WI that a group of us are trying to get shut down. Unfortunately, feline leukemia is running through the shelter and the manager refuses to acknowledge it. Therefore healthy cats and kittens are coming in, contracting the virus, getting adopted and spreading it to other household cats. Many of the cats there are symptomatic and slowly dying without veterinary care or support. So here is what I would like to ask you. 1. If indeed we are able to shut the facility down we will have probably about 30 fel leuk cats and kittens we will need to fine homes for. Any suggestions on how to go about that. 2. Have any of you had any luck with conventional or alternative medications in either treating the disease or the symptoms? If so, what types of things have you tried? I know I am asking a lot but I am afraid that if this shelter gets shut down the local humane society will put all of these fel leuk positive cats down regardless of symptomatology. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much. Jenny Bero ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org
Re: [Felvtalk] Hello - New to the group
Hi, Jenny. Wisconsin Humane Society will, indeed, euthanize FeLV cats/kittens. They tested a litter I rescued, told me they were positive and asked if I wanted to come and get them or if they should euthanize them. Thanks to this group, I retrieved the kittens. Only one was positive. Again, thanks to this group, my vet re-tested and they were all negative. I placed 3 and kept 1 - they are 4 months old and healthy, happy, and thriving. To think the Humane Society would have killed them all!!! Hello all, I have a three year old cat, Mr. Darcy that is Felv+ and is in the last stages of his disease as best as the vet and I can tell. He was symptom free (we didn't know that he was Felv+until then) until 6 months ago when he snuck outside and contracted an URI. He was tested for Felv+ and it was positive. After we got rid of the URI he still was symptomatic and anemic, so we knew he was definetly in one of the later stages of his leukemia. We've had him on Interferon, which seems to help him slightly and he's now on it everyday. We also have been giving him Science Diet A/D to help give him calories and bring some weight back on him, he's only at 7 lbs 5 oz, which is not good. He's stopped eating the A/D so we are starting to assist feed him at night. Anything we can do to help him would be great. Is there a website with information on this LTCI and where can you get it. Our vet isn't up on everything leukemia/Felv, so she doesn't know much. Thanks so much! Jennifer, have you consulted a vet who knows more about FeLV? That could be crucial in Mr. Darcy's treatment. You can just call vets in your local area and ask if they are knowledgeable about FeLV, and if so make an appointment with one of them and get him checked out. If nothing else, you'd be more sure about where Mr. Darcy stands. Good luck to you and eat something! vibes to Mr. Darcy. I love his name! Re: [Felvtalk] LTCI by Imulan
Jenny, I am sorry to hear about your situation. I had a very ill felv cat that weighted less than 4 pounds when I got her and was severely anemic. An alternative vet that I saw suggested something for the anemia - anem-o-aid I belive, I will look when I get home. Initially, she received a blood transfusion and was on steroids/antibiotics for a time and I force fed her for two weeks. Eventually, she improved and gained 2 lbs. Unfortunately, she became severely anemic again and stoutly refused to eat. She quickly went downhill and I had to let her go at that point. Anyway, it is helpful to know if she is having a hemolytic anemia as this can sometimes be stopped with steroids and specific antibiotics. You can generally diagnose this on smear of blood under the microscope. The holistic vet also prescribed Wei Qi booster to boost the immune system. I have also heard of something called Acemannan (Carrisyn) and am currently working on finding more information about it. I will keep you informed of whatever I can. Good luck and God bless. [Felvtalk] Baby Girl please add CLS
Please add sweet Baby Girl to the CLS if possible she was not positive but had 7 good years as a Feral cat next to where I work. Here is what happened: Yesterday I noticed the cat at work (a TNR feral) named Baby Girl was not feeling good. She has had a URI on and off, but never seemed affected by her. This time she was not eating and even allowed me to touch her. Normally she would have swatted me. We discussed taking her to the ER but we did not have a way to catch her or anything to put her in and it was closing. Today before I even got to work Pat, who is really Baby Girls momma with the help of another girl caught her. She had not eaten any food left for her yesterday. So Angel first went to a vet that is one street over from us. They could not see her gave names of other vets. I already decided to call my vet who is also close. She could not be seen until 3:30 first . She was in distress and I had noticed she was cold to the touch although she was kept by a heater all day. I drive her to Junior's vet. Since she is feral I also notified the guy, Phil who looks after her colony. She is only one of 3 or 4 cats that hang out next to us. He said they would probably test her for FELV in fact he wanted her tested. They vet had a hard time getting blood she was so wek she did not fight. Her temp was 94. The vet though she would test positive but she was negative for FELV and FIV. She had pnuemonia and was now coughing blood and she was shutting down. The vet was sure she was dying and euthanized her. Of course it was a heart stick and I decided I did not need to watch. It was over before I even was out of the room. The test came back after she was pts. I called Phil to let him know. He will adopt out any who are adoptable and has kept many cats himself. Anyway I will miss Baby Girl. She was just getting freindly after 6 years and would rub up against all that she used to run away from. The vet was so kind she is going to bury her in her yard . She is now an Angel. -- Sally, Eric (not a cat),Junior(angel), Tiny(angel) Fluffy(soul mate angel), Speedy, Grey and White, Ittle Bitty, Little Black, Lily, Daisy, Pewter, Junior Junior (newest) I call him JJ , Silver, and Spike Please Visit my Message board for some pictures. Jennifer, I can't help with the Interferon but can with the assist feeding. There is a Yahoo Assist Feeding that has some great files on assist feeding. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Feline-Assisted-Feeding/ Just about any canned food can be used. I blenderize the food with a little liquid and syringe feed the mixture. I add the supplements to the mixture to avoid the hassles of pilling. For short term assist feeding meat baby food with no onions or garlic is easy to assist feed. Many kitties will lick it off a coated baby spoon or it is easy to syringe feed. Kitten canned food is higher in calories than the A/D. You want to get the biggest bang per oz with whatever food you feed. [Felvtalk] Benny and Hemobartinella
Hi, this was sent to the list but didn't make it, I am forwarding it, please respond to April directly at * aprilpres...@verizon.net* Hi. I am responding to a post by Wendy on 1/10/09 titled ‘Benny’…sorry, I am not sure how to respond other than emailing…. Benny is doing the same. Very anemic. He is still pretty lethargic and weak and won’t eat much on his own. He did, however, gain 1 pound since I started assist feeding him a/d prescription food. But I would give anything to get him eating on his own again. Wendy asked if my vet put him on a 3 week round of doxycycline for possible hemo, and no, he did not. Benny’s hemo tests came back negative when we got him bloodwork done about a month ago. And then on Christmas eve, we got him more bloodwork that showed his RBC really low, (also his WBC and his platelet count was super low) but the vet didn’t mention hemo then either. I asked the vet today if doxy would be an option for Benny and he said he would be scared to give it to him because of the side effectshe mentioned doxy can create throat ulcers that if they burst could cause the cat to aspirate on their food Has anyone ever heard of this? I am so confused as to what treatment roads to take with Benny. So far, this is what he has gotten since he got sick….(this is all over a 6 week period) 6 weeks of Immunoregulan injections 1 week of interferon (we added this just this past week) 1 week of Clavamox antibiotic (We also added this just this past week as well) Probiotics twice daily Omega 3’s twice daily Hi Vites twice daily 1 week of Nutri-Cal (a high calorie supplement) added to his food 2 weeks of Transfer Factor Plus 1 Injection of Cortisone (Trying to stimulate appetite) 1 Injection of B-12 (Just today for anemia and appetite) Sub Q’s last weekend 1 can of a/d food syringed to him every 24 hours I am scared of putting one more new thing into his system, but don’t want to pass up on the chance to give him something (doxy) that might really get him better. I believe it is severe anemia that we are battling. We can’t afford Epogen shots and the vets say a blood transfusion wouldn’t even be worth it because of it being so temporary. Some days I think Benny is doing better and looking stronger, and some days I think ‘how can he possibly go on being this weak. He still gets up and walks around and goes up and down the steps to his litter box, but aside from that he pretty much hides out behind the couch and stays in one spot all day long. L He has been my best friend for 13 years and I am not about to give up on him without doing everything I can. And I can’t figure out if he is not eating on his own because he just won’t eat or if I am stuffing his face with a syringe all day long and he is too full to eat. But unfortunately, my gut tells me it is not the latter.
