I have my first crate trained dog...he loves his crate and, even
though rarely confined there now, puts himself in it for numerous
reasons.

Both Copper and Thomas like there travel carriers, putting themselves
in them when they want peace and quiet...or to tell me that it is time
to go home etc.  Indoor cats find places under furniture etc when they
want to feel safe.

I continue to be amazed by her progress.  I can't stand the idea of
her in that cage for two or three more weeks.  I'm torn between
buying a bigger cage (hard to afford right now) and releasing her
sooner, say in 3 or 4 more days.  I think she might stick around.
My biggest fear is that she might try to return to my aunt's house,
about 5 blocks away.

I have always said that animals are more honest with us than we are
with them.
I am just happy that Hemi found an honest, loving person.  I have
had 3 ferals.  It took me an average of 6 - 8 months to gain
complete trust, but oce tey passed that threshold, there was no
turning back.  They became the biggest lovers, greatest lap sitters
and demanded to be on the bed at night.  Shows what a little love
can do.

Today when I fed Hemy (she's in a cage on my back covered deck) she
ate while I was there.  I spoke to her and reached a finger through
the cage to touch her head.  No problem.  Then, when I came back to
clean her litter box, I took a chance and placed my hand on the
floor of the cage and remained still.  She moved closer, then nudged
my hand.  I stroked her cheek and she moved her head around in
obvious pleasure.  I petted her a few moments and she purred. This
is a "feral" cat who has, after tail amputation and being moved from
her familiar surroundings, been in a cage on my back deck for only
Five Days!
I'd say she is more afraid and cautious than feral, wouldn't you?
I'm keeping her in the cage for now, and will go slowly so she
doesn't feel pressured.  But what a little sweetheart.  It pains me
to think of how horribly humans have been to her, yet she is willing
to forgive and perhaps trust again.  Bless her!

Hey folks, got an emergency with a possible FELV+ cat in Austin, Texas.
He's had one snap test (and that's with the felv/fiv/heartworm test, which
we know there are a lot of false +s with).  There is no one to hold him for
a confirmatory IFA.  

Someone wrote me asking for help, this is her description of him:

"He is slated to be euthanized at 5pm today. This boy is very affectionate,
loving to be held, petted, scratched, etc. He was even purring while being
petted at the counter at the vet's office with all the strange scents and
animal noises going on! 

He's pretty sick at the moment. Vet says he's extremely anemic. That's why
he hasn't been eating much. And the heat has exacerbated the problem since
he's been an outdoor cat. Vet also says the condition is treatable, but the
treatment makes him very infectious. So what he needs is an indoor home
either in a one-cat household or in a house where all the cats are feline
leukemia positive. 

It's breaking my heart because he's such a sweetie. I'm hoping to find
someone who can provide a home for this baby so he won't have to be
euthanized."

I've asked for pics & etc

I also asked for an extra day which is hopefully being negotiated.  I know
someone on this list has room for a wonderful survivor of this horrible
Texas heat and drought.

I've gotten some wonderful kitties placed as a result of this list (just ask
their moms) so am hoping we can pull a rabbit out of a hat one more time!

She might surprise you and stick around your house.  Where is she getting 
shelter, food and most of all love?  Bringing her inside might be easier than 
you think.  She has already accepted you and learned to trust you.  She might 
like being inside with soft furniture to sleep on and may even want lap time.  
Only thing, once she is inside, she will stay, you won't be able to let her go.

I have always said that animals are more honest with us than we are with them.
I am just happy that Hemi found an honest, loving person.  I have had 3 ferals. 
 It took me an average of 6 - 8 months to gain complete trust, but oce tey 
passed that threshold, there was no turning back.  They became the biggest 
lovers, greatest lap sitters and demanded to be on the bed at night.  Shows 
what a little love can do.

Today when I fed Hemy (she’s in a cage on my back covered deck) she ate while I 
was there.  I spoke to her and reached a finger through the cage to touch her 
head.  No problem.  Then, when I came back to clean her litter box, I took a 
chance and placed my hand on the floor of the cage and remained still.  She 
moved closer, then nudged my hand.  I stroked her cheek and she moved her head 
around in obvious pleasure.  I petted her a few moments and she purred. This is 
a “feral” cat who has, after tail amputation and being moved from her familiar 
surroundings, been in a cage on my back deck for only Five Days!
I’d say she is more afraid and cautious than feral, wouldn’t you?
I’m keeping her in the cage for now, and will go slowly so she doesn’t feel 
pressured.  But what a little sweetheart.  It pains me to think of how horribly 
humans have been to her, yet she is willing to forgive and perhaps trust again.

If only people would spay/neuter their dogs and cats life would be so much 
better for them and we wouldn't have all the heartache.  If they cannot afford 
to do this, then they should not get a pet.  With pets as with children come 
responsibilities and if you cannot fulfill them, don't take them on.  It is not 
fair to them.  I wish I could take on more and children too, but the expense is 
too great and I have not won the lottery yet.  Children they make almost 
impossible to adopt so they end up all too often staying in abusive situations. 
 Life is not fair.
