Re: How is Samantha today?
She will tell you when it is time. Listen to her with your heart then do all you can to help her on her journey. That may be to do nothing or to help her leave---both are so hard. But listen to your loving cat. She is so grateful to you for all your love. Help Angel's Gate Sanctuary (Petition)
Hello Everyone, First, my condolences to everyone that has lost a fur child and prayers for those that are struggling. I haven't been on list as much as usual, but I wanted to pass this on to all of you. Isn't Angel's Gate the sanctuary that Patti sent her Felix to? I remember her talking about Susan and the compassionate people there. Apparently they are in trouble with possible re-zoning threats and need help with signatures for a petition. Please take a look and see if it's something you would like to support: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/627580358

Devastated...Mr. Dobbs My New FIV Rescue Died After Neuter Surgery
There are days like this when I don't know why I continue to take in new FIV and FeLV cases. Mr. Dobbs was a gorgeous pure white, long-haired previous stray that tested FIV positive and was being boarded by a local vet until they could find a rescue to take him. We had offered to take him in, he was healthy and the vet neutered him, vaccinated him, including Rabies yesterday morning as a courtesy for us. I picked him up yesterday afternoon and fell instantly in love with him. He was so affectionate. He would give me hugs and he seemed alert and fine after the surgery. I gave him water and checked on him every hour and finally around 11pm last night before I went to bed. This morning I went to feed him and he was laying by the door, already passed on. There was a small amount of blood where his mouth had layed. I feel just terrible that this sweet loving guy spent his last hours alone and I didn't realize that anything was wrong. He seemed fine, no trouble breathing, his feces looked good, he was drinking, he was happy. What went wrong? A blood clot? I called the vet and they are shocked. In all my years of doing rescue I've never had a cat died after a spay/neuter surgery, even the FeLV or FIV positive ones. Has anyone had this happen? Is there something I could have done to prevent it? Rachel Operation Foster Felix www.operationfosterfelix.org Sharing Our Hearts, Homes Litter Boxes

How tragic - I'd be devastated too. The only sudden death I've had, I attributed to heart worms, and it wasn't after surgery. Never heard of this situation, but wanted you to know that I'm so sorry for your loss. gloria On Jun 29, 2006, at 9:11 AM, Rachel wrote: There are days like this when I don't know why I continue to take in new FIV and FeLV cases. Rachel, I'm so sorry to hear about beautiful Mr. Dobbs. What a horrible shock it must have been when you woke up this morning. I don't know what could have happened. I know a lot of times that people talk about using ISO gas here instead of regular anesthesia during surgery and to give fluids before, during, and after surgery, but it doesn't sound like that was the issue because of the blood. Did the vet speculate what could have happened? Did he say where the blood might have come from? I am so sorry about this. At least he found someone to love him even if for a short, short time. You're in my prayers. :) Wendy __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

Oh Rachel, I'm so sorry this happened to you your sweet Mr.Dobbs. I believe another list member, Hideyo, had a female kitty that died after a spay. She was in her carrier just waiting to be picked up, and when Hideyo got there she had already passed on. He didn't die alone, he knew you were there and that you loved him - even if it was such a short time. There are no words to comfort you right now, but please know that you are in my thoughts prayers. Re: Devastated...Mr. Dobbs My New FIV Rescue Died After Neuter Surgery
I've had it happen twice, three days after a spay---both cats. Different vets, unrelated cats. It sounds like the same type situation. Both cats were throw aways. Both cats were fine when I checked on them late in the 2ndnight. Both were in the process of leaving on the 3rd morning when I checked on them again. My personal vet (not involved in the spays) speculated that there may be a congenital heart problem involved. Another vet speculated that vaccinations at the time of the spay might have stressed the cats out too much. Mr. Dobbs died in a lovinghome -- not on the streets and not in a cage. You gave him that, even for a short time. He sends you lots of love for that and hopes you will be comforted. If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow man. Re: Devastated...Mr. Dobbs My New FIV Rescue Died After Neuter Surgery
Thank you all for the kind words. It is still such a shock for me and I'm sick that he died alone.I just hate that. I wish I had slept in that room with him, there is a daybed in there, perhaps he would have woken me up and let me know something was wrong. I questioned the vaccinations also, wondering if that could have been a possibility. Normally, in rescue, we don't vaccinate the same day we do surgery and I'm not a fan of combo vaccinations or vaccinating for Rabies at the same time of other vaccines. The vet comped the surgery and all vaccinations, so I wasn't going to turn her down. Though he had FIV, he clearly seemed healthy and asymptomatic. I just pray it was fast and painless for him.I doubt I'll ever get over that he passed lying at the door waiting for me to come back in and give him some more love. Thank you again for being so supportive. On a positive note, I just read the message regarding the person looking for a FIV+ cat and that someone adopted one out to them, so that is very positive to read. And I heard from a recent adopter of 3 of our FeLV+ 12 week old kittens that they are thriving and gaining weight and adjusting very well in their new home. Re: How is Samantha today?
Thanks for your good wishes; she told me last night that she is ready to go. She is in a lot of pain, with her big eyes looking up at me, as if to say, Please, help me! I decided this morning that tomorrow is the time to let her go. I'll take her to my vet, and it will be swift and painless. She'll be free to breathe again, without working so hard at it, and will never have pain again. :( I'll be crying, but I know it's the best thing for her; I've already made the arrangements, and she'll be well taken care of. Thank you all for your support, and I will stay on the Email list, because I'm going to get another kitty right away, so as not to be alone, and reading y'all's Emails has given me an education, so I'll still need that, until I make sure my new kitty is safe from this terrible disease. Re: Devastated...Mr. Dobbs My New FIV Rescue Died After NeuterSurgery
You are looking at this all wrong. He was loved and he knew who loved him and wanted to be loved by you. This is not bad. He knew with all his being that you were near. He was not alone. First, he had his angels with him and secondly he had someone who loved him near. Your bodymay not have been in the same room or even the same house but he knew you were close and that your heart was with him. Our hearts are always with those we love, even when our bodies are not. Mr. Dobbs left this world with his angels and with total love. He was warm, sheltered, fed, and, being redundant, loved. An awful lot of people never know all of these things. He would not have awakened you and there was nothing more you could do for him. He taught you not to take things on appearance, much like the Royal Princess Kitty Katt taught me. Just because someone looks wonderfully healthy or terribly sick does not mean that is the true situation. Life ends suddenly. None of us really knows when it will end. We have to learn to live daily andto accept that things simply are not as they appear all the time. Do not beat yourself up. Mr. Dobbs wouldbe very upset with you and feel he had failed to teach you the lesson he was sent to teach. Be gentle with yourself and look at all you did for him. If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow man. Re: How is Samantha today?
Spend tonight loving her and cuddling her in your heart. You can send her all sorts of love without moving her or causing her pain. Just be with her and tell her it is alright to leave this world. That you are going to be ok. She may well decide to leave tonight on her own but she needs to know that is ok with you and .well, she is very concerned about you and your welfare. Thanks for your good wishes; she told me last night that she is ready to go. She is in a lot of pain, with her big eyes looking up at me, as if to say, "Please, help me!" I decided this morning that tomorrow is the time to let her go. Thevet said she thinks the tumor is taking up more space, even with thePrednisone, and that's why she's having so much trouble breathing; theyhardly got any fluid out of her, the last time they drained it out. Ithink she will be gone soon. :( :( :(Juliaimage.tiff No virus found in this incoming message.Checked by AVG Free Edition.Version: 7.1.394 / Virus Database: 268.9.5/377 - Release Date: 6/27/2006 No virus found in this incoming message.Checked by AVG Free Edition.Version: 7.1.394 / Virus Database: 268.9.6/378 - Release Date: 6/28/2006

Dear Hideyo, To have gone from Feral to being cuddled in your arms - you did a wonderful job and gave Hannibal so much love. He doesn't have a single regret, only great love for you. Please know that you are in my prayers during your time of sorrow. Take care of yourself so Hannibal can guide another lost kitty into your life. Hi, everyone, I first wanted to thank you all for all the prayers and encouragement and support for Hannibal - a little less than 24 hours ago, he passed away - he stopped breathing in my arms.. I wish he was at home but unfortunately we were at the vet and he was getting IV fluid... I was with him the whole time..I really did not expect him to cross the bridge yesterday.. I just wanted to make him feel better and I thought that IV would have helped him.. and now I think about it, I am so sure that putting him on IV did shorten his life after all.. as always,, I have so many regrets for things I wish I had done, I had known.. or I wish I had not done.. if I had known as much as I do now.. I would have made Hannibal's life so much better and longer.I am so sorry for Hannibal not knowing any better... but I hope I can contribute my learning experience to any other kitties out there who are fighting against CRF... Hannibal was and is such a fighter.. he was the very first feral I rescued in U.S. and I have known him over 10 years... I feel so fortunate to have met him and feel honored to have met and feel privileged to have had the opportunity to take care of him.. I wish I had done a better job, Hannibal... and I am so sorry that I did not pay attention well enough and took your sight way.. I know it was struggle for you.. but one thing for sure.. I have loved him so very much.. I loved him like there is no tomorrowand I always will... We celebrated his departure to his new life with all other kitties last night.. we all miss him.. I am so very much going to miss holding him.. and seeing places that I used to see.. but I also know that his soul will continue to live with me.. and is still around...I am still feeling numb and shock.. but I wanted to thank everyone for all the prayers. I also wanted to thank Helen and her website on CRF support ---I have learned so much from ... I know for sure that without the information,, I couldn't have taken care of him as well as I did Hideyo and Hannibal, my little precious hero...
Re: Devastated...Mr. Dobbs My New FIV Rescue Died After Neuter Surgery
oh my god, I am so sorry. Yes, I have heard of it. Hideyo had it happen to her. I think it happens in a small number of cases, like with human surgeries. It could mean there was an underlying health issue that was undetectable. Michelle
Re: Devastated...Mr. Dobbs My New FIV Rescue Died After Neuter Surgery
I chose tonot spay my Moogie (FELV+). I think many of us choose to not put these guys under unnecessary surgeries (though sometimes it is something you just can't live with for male cats, they do tend to reek). BUT, my girl was an indoors ONLY cat, with no intact males in the house, so there was NO chance of her getting pregnant. That being said, I have at least3 FIV+ male cats that were all neutered and are fine today (I say at least, because I'm not sure at this point who's FIV+ and who's FIV-). I did have one female feral die after her spay (2 weeks after surgery), but she was FIV/FELV negative. She had a nasty infection of her incision, and I didn't know until she lay dead in the storage room. She always hid when I was near, so I had no way to know. Poor girl. I'm so sorry you lost your boy, some things just can't be helped though, and blaming yourself wont change anything, it will only bring you down. Try to keep a positive perspective. You tried to help this cat, you did everything you could to rescue him, and make his life better. He died, but that doesn't change the fact that YOU did all the great things you did for him. How many others in the past have you had spayed/neutered and that have gone on to live wonderful lives because of your efforts? I bet if you do the math, you have a WONDERFUL success rate! We absolutely must prevent new litters from being born, spay/neuter is something we HAVE to do, and it saves MILLIONS of lives! Occasionally, we may lose one or two to the surgery, but there are oh so many we saved from fates much worse than death. So many animals suffer every day, starving, neglected, abused, scared, lost. We can't save them all, but we can prevent it from happening to a new generation of cats, by preventing new litters! ALL of my current cats are spayed/neutered, even Bones, my broken back girl (you may recall my worries about her spay surgery, but she did fine). Would I do it again? You bet I would! And do I put my money where my mouth is? YEP! I do! I had MYSELF spayed over5 years ago! ;-) Phaewryn PLEASE Adopt a cat from Little Cheetah Cat Rescue!!!http://ucat.us/adopt.html DONATE: We could really use a power saw (for construction), a digital camera (for pictures) and HOMES for CATS! Re: FIV resources (black cats)
I have two black cats too, one with no teeth (well, he has his fangs, but nothing else), social issues (scared of men, fast movements, eye contact), and unpredictability issues (likes to cuddle in bed, then out of no-where attacks you, biting and claws); the other has seasonal allergies and goes bald in the fall (kinda cute, except he's miserable and itchy), tends to be unpredictable (you don't pick him up unless HE decides he wants you to), and is a dominant cat (likes to boss the others around, swats at them for no reason). I think I know why MINE aren't getting adopted, LOL! Luckily, one has white whiskers on one side of his face, so no collars needed to tell them apart (the other has his tongue sticking out the side of his mouth half the time, and a scar around his neck). I have a black cat too. She has some white on her belly and chest. Taylor is a bit shy but very loving.
