You guys mostly know about Mythic's skin issues...
well, he's gotten bad again, so last week I took him to my other vet to try to
get something to help. I've always taken him to the first vet, but all they ever
do is give him a dexamethisone shot, and that only works for 2 weeks, but it
DOES help. So, I thought I'd take him to my other vet, the newer one that gives
me a rescue discount. I took him, and I'm really regretting my decision now. For
one thing, every question I asked, the "vet" I had, shehad to go look up
the answer in a book, so that was disappointing, I can look up my own medical
research in books and online! I told them what the other vet does, and how it
helps, they said they don't give cats that shot at their office due to the
possibility of it making the cat diabetic. They said they prefer oral
prednisolone. I told them I can't pill Mythic, so I asked about the possibility
of them having it compounded into a liquid.. the vet TECH had to tell the VET
that that could be done, she was so clueless! SO, my total bill was $160, and
all I got out of it was a bottle of shampoo. The compounded medicine cost me
extra, and I had to mail order it. It was $17.00. I just tried to give it to
Mythic... it's a THREE ML dose! THREE CC's! Do you know how hard it is to get
that amount of anything into a fighting cat to begin with?! AND, on top of that,
it's CHERRY flavored syrup, and he gags and foams at the mouth all over the
place, and I can't get him to swallow even 1/4 of the HUGE dose! SO, what it
comes down to, is I got a $180 bottle of shampoo!!! I could have taken him to my
first vet, and spent $36 on a shot that I KNOW would have made him feel better
for 2 weeks! Now, he's still suffering, and I blew $180 for nothing, my rent is
due, and I don't have the money to buy anything else or go to the other vet now!
This is SO frustrating for me! I called the vet just now, and basically was
told, "call tomorrow during business hours"!

So, if anyone has a DOG that needs a 3mg per ML dose of
Prednisolone, I have a bottle to give away. I doubt ANY cat would EVER take this
crap, when Mythic spit it everywhere, it flew up in my face and in my mouth, and
it is HORRIBLE! It tastes like cough syrup (except maybe sweeter)! A dog might
be able to handle it, but poor Miffie is now foaming all over the house, trails
of slime drooling from his chin, looking QUITE POed! Plus, he didn't take enough
to help at all!

Can you guys refer me to a GOOD compounding pharmacy?
How is drsfostersmith.com? I must say, I am totally NOT AT ALL impressed by

I have been boycotting Chinese goods for at least 10 years. I started
because they use prison labor to make a lot of their goods, and they have no
environmental regulations for factories either. It is hard to avoid
Chinese goods, but the effort makes you much more conscious about where your
things come from. It also just makes you buy less.

My partner, Gray, teaches Chinese history in a university. One year he had
all his students go through everything in their dorm room and make a list of
what was made in China. The students were all amazed at the length of their
lists-- hardly anything they had was made anywhere else. It is a

Hi Phaewyrn,
Ohhh, I know all about those ding-dong compounders!!! I had to medicate my African Grey Parrot for a couple of months. The emergency clinic broke open human liquid gel caps into a bottle, I only had to squirt a drop into her mouth each day. Plus, they charged me a reasonable amount. But they only see emergency patients, so off to my regular vet for a refill, which came from a compounding pharmacy and was $40.00 a bottle. I was nowsupposed to squirt 3ml into a parrot (3ml must be their all-purpose dose, I think those compounders would mix that up for a dwarf hamster!) Luckily, it was unflavored and clear; my sweetiedrank it from a spoonall by herself. THEN, we needed another refill. I take her in for her check-up, ask a question about feeding her bananas, which they somehow misinterpret as a request for a vile, bright yellow, banana-flavored refill of ourprescription (the flavoring I didn't order cost an extra$7.00). One look atthatstuff and the bird decided I was trying to poison her, wings flapping, beak snapping, little chicken legs running, I couldn't even get it in herwith a syringe, much less a spoon. After some argument with the vet over who's fault this was, they finally agreed to replaceit with the plain stuff again, at which point her tests came back that she was ok and no longer needed the meds :o)

Good luck with your baby,
Beth

I've had the flavored meds argument so many times it is pitiful. Sometimes the pills can be crushed and "melted" in tuna juice then "force fed." Sometimes they can be coated with real butter. But cherry has never cut it.

I'm sorry this has happened to you. I wonder if the other vet would help you out if you asked???

My God!!
$160.00 for the visit?
This is a break for a rescue? Not hardly!
Especially for one kitty!
I could see it if there were more than a few kitties.
Cherry flavorright!
Cats do not like that and will foam until it is out of their system. Should be flavored with tuna or something from the fish family.
Geez, even my dogs won't eat or take that.
I would certainly contact the better business bureau to report this as a complaint. At least have the satisfaction knowing that you spoke with them.

I'm sorry you have to endure this.
This is total BS!
I have several Vets myself in the area. None of mine would never consider allowing a rescue pay that kind of money for one cat. They know rescues can't afford the costs and they would lose the money as well.
So a little money is better than none.

I hope you can do something soonfor him!

Re: Kitten update and FIP question

2006-08-08 Thread Nina

Hi Leslie,
I haven't been able to keep up with the list, I'm betting others with
more knowledge than I have posted about potential FIP risks to Powder.
From what I understand about it, there are genetic risks involved that
take most of the protection against it out of our hands. All I can say
is that giving Powder a chance in your loving home would seem to
outweigh your concerns. A shelter situation would certainly expose her
to greater health risks than Satchmo alone. Maybe I'm operating from
the ridiculous premise of it just wouldn't be fair, but I think Powder
is better off with you no matter what happens because of it.

You asked about success stories... My little Timmy and his brother
Lucky were 2 of 6 kittens born with felv. We didn't find out the litter
was pos until the first kitten died. Lucky has never been tested, (he
was adopted out and they decided they didn't care what the result of the
test was, they were just going to love and care for him), and Tim tested
neg when he was finally tested at about 6mos. They are going on 3 yrs
now and are both healthy and strong, (the other 4 kittens died between
6mos and 2 yrs old). I think your philosophy of taking each day as a
blessing and being grateful for whatever time you have, (while remaining
proactive and optimistic), is the best one we can have under any
circumstance. I am sure that my little felv angels were part of my life
to help me with just this lesson. Blessings and thanks to all our
special needs loved ones and all those that have the courage to care for
them!

When does Powder come home?

The question: my last + cat to pass, Hepburn, was taken down by FIP,
she had the wet variety, potbelly and all. So whether or not my
current + guy, Satchmo, introduced it to her, he was certainly exposed
to it before I knew what she had. Should I worry about this in
introducing a + kitten to him? I would feel just awful about giving
something to a cat that I'm trying to help. What do you think?

The request: I know that it's riskier than average to expect a kitten
to make it the long haul with leukemia, but do any of you have these
success stories? I've heard of kitten's turning negative from you
(and please reiterate those and if you did anything special to reach
that conclusion), but are there kittens that are positive that grow to
be healthy, positive adults?

I have already embraced (or am trying) your philosophy that the
control we have is over our attitude toward the events in life, not
the events themselves (well, to some extent, but not totally). So if
my expectations in adopting this kitten are that if we have two
months, that's a success, and anything above that is a gift, then
that's what I'll do.

Thank you all so much,

Leslie

Re: Kitten update and FIP question

2006-08-08 Thread elizamaggie

Leslie,
How exciting! Will you keep her named Powder or rename her (or is it a him?)? I don't know anything about FIP.

I wish I could give you answers as to how long you can expect Powder to be with you, but I'm afraid I just don't know. My girls are now 9 months and seem to be really strong and healthy, a far cry from two months ago when the vet said one of them was on death's door - so I guess they don't know either.

Someone on this board (sorry, I can't give credit because I don't remember!) made a really good point that struck me and has stuck - they said that cats have no concept of future, they only know the now. How true! As long as my girls are happy in the moment that's all that matters because they have no mechanism to fear the future (that's quite a gift!).

Hideyo, my heart goes out to you. You have done such an amazing job in caring for these cats, you haven't let one of them down for a second. All of my well wishes and Satch's naughty-cat energy will be pointed toward you and your cats.

And Sherry, so sorry to here about Nya. It's true what the others have said, that her life was the better for it, even if it was too short by our standards.

MC, Maggie, and Nina, thank you so much for replying to my email. MC what a great wealth of information that was, that makes me feel a lot better about bringing in Powder...and losing Hepburn oddly enough. Nina, thanks for you story of the healthy kittens, and Maggie, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that your two stay on this side of the vet's amazement. :)

I've actually been thinking about that comment about how cat's perceive things. No yesterday, no tomorrow, just now. Hungry now, happy now, in pain now, pet me now. It's true and it makes things much simpler.

I don't think that I'll keep the name Powder (she's female) because it makes me think of the movie or a dilute calico, and her colors are pretty sharp. I don't know what I'll name her, I'll have to see what strikes me. I hope to pick her up tonight, but it'll be after work, so if the humane society needs to speak to my landlord, I'll have to wait until tomorrow. :)

I'm glad 'what's her name' will be coming home soon, (I'm sure she'll
let you know soon enough what she wants to be called!). High hopes and
prayers that she turns out to be one of the fortunate and lives a long,
healthy life. I think we would all do better concerning ourselves with
tomorrow, but living in the now. Re Satchmo and the little one... I
would talk to him about her coming to live with you. Let him know that
she's to be HIS kitten, that you are bringing her home so he will have
someone to watch over and play with. The you were once in her place
and she needs us logic doesn't seem to work as well with my crew! I'm
sure with as many kitties as you've had, I don't have to remind you to
take the introductions slowly and to shower Satch with attention. Let
us know all about it.

Hugs to you, and congratulations,
Nina

Dear Hideyo,

I'm sorry Peter had to leave so soon, but you can never know what fate
might have awaited him if you had left him out instead of bringing him
home.

My heart aches for all of the losses you've endured, and I understand
completely about not spending enough time individually because of the
sheer numbers... But they DO know your love, and the DO have each other,
and they DO understand.

My thoughts and prayers are with you now.
Sleep Soft, dear Peter...

Dear Hideyo, so sorry for your losses. I too lost my cat today to feline
leukemia, it was hard for kiko to breathe anymore, unfortunately we had to put
him down. Also, my poor mickey oldest dog passed away yesterday at home in his
sleep at the age of 13. It has been a horrible week, the worst I have had in a
long time.

Peter may well have had something wrong long before
you brought him home. Many little ones have latent problems that can show
up years later---something they were exposed to, a disease they appeared to
overcome, just plain stress from being abandoned, abused, mishandled or just
improperly fed. Do not believe you are responsible for Peter's leaving so
soon. We fall into that trap and hurt even more which hurts the one who
left. He knows he was loved and cared for and regrets deeply the pain you
are feeling. He would never willingly cause you pain but his time had come
and he had to leave. Please calm yourself and let him visit you. Ask
him to visit when the time is right and he will tell you everything you want to
know.

only works for 2 weeks, but it DOES help. So, I
thought I'd take him to my other vet, the newer one
that gives me a rescue discount. I took him, and I'm
really regretting my decision now. For one thing,
every question I asked, the vet I had, she had to
go look up the answer in a book, so that was
disappointing, I can look up my own medical research
in books and online! I told them what the other vet
does, and how it helps, they said they don't give
cats that shot at their office due to the
possibility of it making the cat diabetic. They said
they prefer oral prednisolone. I told them I can't
pill Mythic, so I asked about the possibility of
them having it compounded into a liquid.. the vet
TECH had to tell the VET that that could be done,
she was so clueless! SO, my total bill was $160, and
all I got out of it was a bottle of shampoo. The
compounded medicine cost me extra, and I had to mail
order it. It was $17.00. I just tried to give it to
Mythic... it's a THREE ML dose! THREE CC's! Do you
know how hard it is to get that amount of anything
into a fighting cat to begin with?! AND, on top of
that, it's CHERRY flavored syrup, and he gags and
foams at the mouth all over the place, and I can't
get him to swallow even 1/4 of the HUGE dose! SO,
what it comes down to, is I got a $180 bottle of
shampoo!!! I could have taken him to my first vet,
and spent $36 on a shot that I KNOW would have made
him feel better for 2 weeks! Now, he's still
suffering, and I blew $180 for nothing, my rent is
due, and I don't have the money to buy anything else
or go to the other vet now! This is SO frustrating
for me! I called the vet just now, and basically was
told, call tomorrow during business hours!

So, if anyone has a DOG that needs a 3mg per ML dose
of Prednisolone, I have a bottle to give away. I
doubt ANY cat would EVER take this crap, when Mythic
spit it everywhere, it flew up in my face and in my
mouth, and it is HORRIBLE! It tastes like cough
syrup (except maybe sweeter)! A dog might be able to
handle it, but poor Miffie is now foaming all over
the house, trails of slime drooling from his chin,
looking QUITE POed! Plus, he didn't take enough to
 help at all!

Can you guys refer me to a GOOD compounding
pharmacy? How is drsfostersmith.com? I must say, I
am totally NOT AT ALL impressed by vetcentric, which
is who made this THREE ML DOSE of CHERRY flavored
 syrup for a CAT!

P.S. Pet Health Pharmacy is mainly a compounding
pharmacy, and only for animals, so that's good. They
charge me $12.90 for 3 syringes of medicine for Julie,
plus $4.50 for shipping, which isn't bad. The meds
last about 2 months, so that's good. Do not use
Abrams Pharmacy (on the link Belinda sent out) in
Dallas; they are way overpriced, plus don't service
just animals. They were going to charge me like $45
for the same thing that Pet Health Pharmacy gave me!

Leslie,

Congratulations on Powder's future adoption!
Absolutely, there are kittens who throw off the virus
and become healthy adults, and even if they don't,
they can live with it for a long time. Many die
before age 3, but some do not. My kitty Cricket lived
to 4.5 years, and I truly believed he would have lived
longer had he not been stressed out by ten family
members staying with us in our 1500 sq. ft. house for
a week during Hurricane Rita. He shortly thereafter
developed anemia. If I were you, I would be giving
the L-lysine and the Mega C for the rest of kitty's
life. Also, good quality food, like Evo. And LOTS of
love and snuggles! Bless you!

Of course it hurts.they would have meant nothing if their
leaving didn't cause grief and tears. They don't want us to feel this way
but we must because we are human and not nearly as wise as they are. If you
have rescue remedy or any other essence handy try it. But only with the
idea that it will help you feel what you need to feel, not that it will take
away the pain. Talk to them and let them know how you feel and how you miss
them. This helps a lot of people though, depending on who is around, you
may want to go for a long walk while you are doing this. Tell them
everything you are feeling and how grateful you are to have had their bodies
in your life and how much you want them to remain around you. Cry all you
need to. It washes out the pain and leaves the wonderful memories. Bless
you.

well said, marylyn--they seem to understand the natural order of
things SO much better than we do!

it always hurts when they leave, but i think they leave a big part of
themselves behind, staking out their own piece of our hearts forever.

love never dies, it just changes form. that's what i try to hold onto.

LOL Beth! Yep, it must be the standard "get out of it cheap and easy"
thing, the 3ML dosing. I did call my vet today after work, told them how unhappy
I was with the compounding pharmacy, asked them to write me a new prescription
at a reasonable dosage (volume) of 0.5 ML, and flavored as something a CAT might
EAT in real life. The tech (I know them all first name basis now) was very
shocked that the mistake had been made, and apologized, she's calling the
pharmacy tomorrow during their normal hours, and most likely, they will FIX this
mistake at no cost to me. I'll know more tomorrow. I told them if they couldn't
work it out, I would be asking for a faxed prescription to drsfostersmith.com. I
talked to them also, they were very helpful, and suggested the volume ML/MG for
me to request at my vet's office. I'll probably use them if this doesn't work
out at no cost to me.

Well, the other vet's officeis a bit "backwards" (behind the times,
on most issues) so that's why I switched to this "better" vet clinic. But, I got
stuck with this new fresh out of vet school doctor.. next time, I will ask for
the good vet there by name, you can be sure! LOL! I did call today, and told the
vet receptionist (a girl I get along very well with, I bottle fed her babies
this weekend while I was there) that I knew more then their new vet did, and
asked if she was fresh out of school, and she laughed and said "Well, yeah,
pretty much."! Anyways,, now I know.

just need to vent about my feral feluk

2006-08-08 Thread JENI RECA
sorry, I just need to vent about the frustration I am going through right
now with the feral feluk living in my house...I know I don't have as big as
problems as everyone else, but I know some of you can sympathize with
me...so the story is after our beloved papoose died of feluk, I was
approached at work by the head of the HR department at my shelter and she
asked me if I could take in a feluk she trapped and spayed and was going to
release until they found out she was feluk. I said yes, because our feluk
Hillman Waller was lonely after papoose passed on and well I was lonely too
with only one cat and the three dogs in the house and I wanted to help other
feluks. My husband was not too happy at all, didnt really like the idea
another cat, he didnt even want papoose (but fell head over heels in love
with him). So i took home this very feral black female about 5 years old
feluk postive. We have had her for about 3 months and I have not gotten to
touch her once, I am okay with that, but it hurts not to be able to pet her
and show her I like her. She first lived in a play cage but was more
freaked out about being in it and attacked me anytime I went to change the
litter or feed her, I let her loose in the house. She had hiding spaces and
that was fine, I checked up on her and made sure she ate, but now she has
gotten into the wall of the duplex we live in. The basement was refinished
into a living space that we have and they put up new walls but there is a
space between the new walls and the old and she got into the there by an
opening that popped open without my knowlegde and now we cant get her out!
I am so frustrated and upset that she is in the wall and that she isnt going
to come out for me. most likely we will have to trap her but i just think
she so unhappy it seams and I feel bad for her. she is so freaked out by
our dogs and our other cat tries to get close to her but she doesnt really
like him. he's lonely and she must be lonely, and i fell awful about her
and now she is the wall and i wrote a really long story. i know i shouldnt
complain i know people out here on the list have it a lot worst then me, I
am just upset and worried because who knows what is in those walls and god
forbid she eats something back there she shouldnt and chews on something
back there she shouldn't and well rats, i hope i dont have rats, i live in a

Hey Jeni,
I trapped a Feral cat last year and we changed him to a different condo
and didn't realise he could get in the wall. I couldn't get him out
either. I put really smelly food where he could get to it and where I
could grab him and after a few times I got him out and fixed the whole.
Where gloves if you are not sure how the cat will react. Good luck, Janine

Re: just need to vent about my feral feluk

2006-08-08 Thread TenHouseCats

this probably won't sound helpful, but with a feral, as long as she
has access to food and water, she's probably happy and safe where she
is. remember that to her, human companionship is NOT a safe or
desirable thing--if she's ever gonna consider it so, it'll have to be
on her terms, and at her pace. doing things that she sees as
threatening--like trying to pet her to show her you love her--isn't
likely to work the way you'd like it to! (as one of my feral friends
swears, all feral momcats tell their kittens that their fur will fall
out if they ever let a human touch them)

many feral cats only come out to eat at night, when there's fewer
people around to hurt them, so that'd be the best time to actually see
her. feed her stinky disgusting cat food that she can't resist,
starting with it close by her hidey hole. take a book and a low
light/flashlight, and sit far away from the food--when she does come
out, don't approach her, let her just get used to you as a harmless
piece of furniture. talk to her quietly as she eats so she gets used
to hearing your voice. if she doesn't bolt when she sees you, keep
moving the food bowl closer and closer to where you're sitting. in
time you might be able to get around her and wall off her hiding
place, so at least you'll know she can't get into anything that could
hurt her

i, personally, can hardly bear to work with ferals, and have enormous
respect for those who can. it just breaks my heart to see them SO
afraid of humans, and so unaware of how good love feels but there
is no feeling in the world to compare with that you get when a feral
accepts you, and allows you into their world!

bless you for giving this little one a home, even if she's not quite
ready to accept it!

Just s further word of encouragement: our (Wini)Fred, to whom I refer as
our former quasi-feral, took months to tame down. She had been abandoned at
a few months of age in a trailer park, and foraged all summer until a
tender-hearted coworker of mine worried about her in the approaching cold
weather, and trapped her. I was brand new at feral -- or hard stray as
they say on the ferals list -- handling and did a lot of things wrong. But
we finally got her in a small room by herself, where, as it happened, the
doorknob was missing and there was a wide crack at the bottom of the door,
so that she and the other cats could hear each other and even interact under
the door. At first she kept crawling up into the framework of the decrepit
50s overstuffed chair we had in there, but we sat down in the room and read
to her every night (100 Greatest Science Fiction Stories) or watched DVDs
and talked. Eventually she would walk over us as we sat on the floor, or
come up on the chair arm for treats or pets. It's been a few years and we
still can't pick her up properly (though last night I quickly picked her up
and set her down and she didn't freak) but she's very loving and leans
against your neck with her solid little body from the back of the sofa, or
sometimes if you're laying down she'll flop on your face. So once the two
of you get past this hard bit and she's out of the wall, be patient and
persevere, bribe her with food and do the slow blink thing. It's very
gratifying when they bond with you, and you've saved another starfish. ;-)

bless you for giving this little one a home, even if she's not quite
ready to accept it!
