Frustrated with Vets in AZ

2006-08-17 Thread kandbz_ mom
As some of you know, I have been looking for a "good, knowledgeable" vet for Angel, who tested positive for Felv. Anyway, my sister had to take her dog to a vet today (not her usual vet, but they agreed to get her dog in pretty quickly).  My sister called me after they got home and said she was talking to the receptionist about me looking for a vet to treat my felv pos. kitten.  Right away, the lady told my sister that I need to be careful because the disease is so contagious that my other two cats can get it just from being in the same room as Angel. My sister explained to her that I feed and water them all in separate dishes and they don't play together or groom each other or anything. The receptionist said still, just them all being in the same room together can spread it.       How frustrating...I am starting to think that I may have to take Angel to another state to get her a vet who knows something about this disease.
LOL!!      Just had to share with you all...Have a great day!     Karen

Then keep a nice shovel near the door for the doggie.  I once chased a couple of pitbulls out of my yard and down the block, until they disappeared behind a house.  They threatened a nursing feral momcat in my yard.       I was out early on a Sunday morning and saw these two dogs staring at me.  I casually picked up a 5 foot long metal fence post and walked around to the back of my house to alert my roommate that I might need medical assistance, then walked back to the side yard.  At this point they were inside my yard and I went off.  I was so furious that I forgot they were pitbulls.  I remember marching down my street early on a Sunday morning, muddy jeans, hair pinned atop my head, yellow rubber gloves on my hands, banging that fence post on the cement and roaring at them.  Once I realized what an idiot I was, I was pretty shaken.  But, had they gotten ahold of Cutie-Pie or her babies,  I
would have beaten them to death with that fence post.      One of those dogs came back once and snuck up on me when I was working in the front yard.  I turned around and he wasn't even 2 feet away.  For a moment I felt fear -- and he knew it.  Then I grabbed a broom off the front porch and repeated the banging/roaring thing.  Haven't seen either of them since.     So get something heavy, with a sharp edge, and a long handle.  Dog tries that again -- embrace your rage and roar.[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:Thank you so much for the link and for your words.  I turned off the news and put on some soothing music to calm us both down and held her

I worked very late tonight and came home to find my Popeye very
lethargic.  He would not eat.  I am taking him to the vet in the
morning, but I think it may be his time.  He is the cat who has high blood
pressure and is going blind that I can't pill.  I think he may have
congestive heart failure as he seems to be wheezing when he breathes.  I
syringed him some water and tuna juice, but I just don't want to put him through
going to the emergency vet.  I'm going to take him in tomorrow and hope for
the best, but be prepared to let him go.  :(

I'm very upset right now.  I was walking out to get the
mail and my neighbor's mail (he's out of town) when I heard a lot
of yelling and turned around in time to see a dog going after Mama Kitty - in MY
yard on MY sidewalk.  She was wild with fear and well she should have
been.  I dropped the mail - it went everywhere - and started running after
that dog screaming N!

Mama climbed up the big oak more than 8 ft but then she fell and hit the
ground hard and that horrible dog picked her up in
his mouth.  She's just a tiny thing.  She got away and ran up the
arbor in the back that has to be 10ft tall and I chased that sorry
black dog away.  I got her down from the arbor and she ran to the
backyard - terrified.

I just stood with her a moment and talked to her and then she ran to the
back window pawing to get in.  I picked her up and carried that sweet
girl inside and she's in here now with eyes fully dilated.  Keeps
looking out the window.  With FeVL she does NOT need this kind of
stress.

Those sorry neighbors haven't even checked to see if Mama is ok.
I am furious but trying to be calm for her sake.  I don't think she has any
broken skin or broken bones but it is probably too soon to tell if she is really
hurt because she is going on adrenalin.  I've a good mind to say something
to them about it.  I could hear the mother yelling 'who let the dog out'
but that doesn't do much for Mama Kitty.

Thanks for letting me rant - I am so upset.

(sorry if this shows up twice, post wasn't going through this
morning)Jeni,What happened with the cat that was trapped in your
wall?  I was reading some stuff in the files of my feral list and I came
across this advice for your situation.  I hope you don't need it at this
point.  Please give us an update.NinaOne way to get cats out of a crawlspace is to cover the hole with
hardware cloth (wire mesh 1/4-1/2 inch holes) and cut a flap in it.
Pull it out a tiny bit toward you...just enough so that a cat trapped
inside will push against it and get out. The cat/kitten pushes out.
But, when they come back, the rigid wire doesn't push IN to the
crawlspace (it gets hung up on itself since you started it in one
direction) and the cat can't get back in.

You can also buy a one way door from Tomahawk (lets animals out but
not back in but it sounds like time is of essence, here. A one-way
door looks like a cage trap end, with a door that pushes open. You
put one end against the hole, and the cat pushes out the other.
With cats it is important to cover the sides of the one-way door the
same way you would a trap, so that the cat, in the darkness of the
cellar, sees the light at the end of the device (the door it has to
push through) and doesn't spend a lot of time trying to get out the
wire at the sides (just like you see a cat do when it's stuck in a
trap).

If you use hardware cloth it is important to make the flap small (less
than six inches by six inches, and pull it out only a little. Don't
bend it a lot or it will be floppy enough for the cat to pull down
and go back inside. I usually cut the wire so the flap points up (does
this make any sense at all?) Like an upside down cat door.

I just wanted to thank everyone for all the encouragement, kind words and
of course advice.  We are borrowing a trap from a friend, plan on
trapping her and just getting her back in the house.  Unfortuantely we
do not have an extra room to keep her in.  We have one bedroom an open
floor area with the kitchen and livingroom and the down stairs is all
opened.  I plan on making her a small comfortable area under our stair
area where she can hide better in and maybe won't want to go back into the
wall.  Thank you again, this list and the people on it are great and
it's nice to be able to turn to in need.

Surprisingly I don't know it by heart. Some things just don't register in my brain.

Letter From Your Pet In HeavenTo my dearest family, some things I'd like to say.But first of all, to let you know, that I arrivedokay.I'm writing this from the Bridge. Here I dwell with God above. Here there's no more tears of sadness. Here is just eternal love. Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out ofsight.Remember that I am with you every morning, noon andnight. That day I had to leave you when my life on earth wasthrough,God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcomeyou. It's good to have you back again, you were missedwhile you weregone. As for your dearest family, They'll be here later on."God gave me a list of things that he wished for me todo. And foremost on the list was to watch and care foryou. And when you lie in bed at night the day's chores putto flight,God and I are closest to you... in the middle of thenight. When you think of my life on earth, and all thoseloving years, because you are only human, they are bound to bringyou tears. But do not be afraid to cry: it does relieve the pain.Remember there would be no flowers, unless there wassome rain.I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned. If I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand. But one thing is for certain, though my life on earthis o'er.I'm closer to you now than I ever was before. There are rocky roads ahead of you and many hills toclimb; But together we can do it by taking one day at a time.It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for youtoo; That as you give unto the world, the world will giveto you.If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain; Then you can say to God at night..."My day was not in vain."And now I am contented... that my life was worthwhile.Knowing as I passed along I made somebody smile.God says: "If you meet somebody who is sad and feelinglow;Just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way yougo."When you're walking down the street with me on yourmind;I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind. And when it's time for you to go... from that body tobe free.Remember you're not going... you're coming here to me.-Author Unknown

I am very happy you are going to adopt another kitty, if not Trixie, then another little angel.  Your strength (and others' on this list) brings me hope for whatever I have to face with my Pippin.  They so need love in their lives and we don't know for how long we will have them.  I just wanted to say thank you for caring so much about these babies.     Gina   Leslie <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:Nina, Thank you so much for this message, that is exactly what I have been needing to hear.  I know it's a crap shoot with these guys, and Azrael is exactly why I'm not a gambler!  BUT it also does not mean that her brief time here is the same path that they all follow.      And as I said before, Azrael taught me that facing the
situation that I feared most (adopting a positive cat and losing it quickly) would not break me as part of me was certain that it would.  I've let enough time pass between the heartbreak of my last one and now that I am resilient enough to be strong for them again.  So I am going to adopt another when I get back from vacation next week.  Trixie is still recovering from her URI and they expect her to be available for adoption in two weeks, so I think that I'll see how she pulls through.       If these guys find other homes in that time, then I'll find another.     I'm ready, I want one, so there it is.  :)     Leslie   --Message: 8Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2006 13:10:33 -0700From: Nina <

andJazz to felv.  Her name is Pistol Pete, (there was confusion over gender when she was named), but I constantly call her my Joy.  I know there arenever any guarantees, but it does make my heart soar when I think of thepossibilities of having Petey in my life for years and years to come. No matter what you and Satch decide, any animal would be blessed toshare their lives with you.  What you gave Azrael is priceless and I dostill hope you may find the courage to do the same for her littermate.Sometimes being forewarned helps.  I have an FIV boy named Starman.  Hewas in terrible shape when he came to me and I was told to not expecthim to live long.  I decided that I would not live in expectation, oneway or the other, that I would be grateful for the time we had togetherand for giving him the opportunity to learn to trust and enjoy life as apampered house
cat.  He's been here for about 8 mos now and he'sabsolutely robust.  I suspect he's not going anywhere soon, and even if he does, I'll never be sorry for helping him discover what Home means.NinaPlease visit my Tigger Tales site!       At the bottom of the home and links pages are my merchant affiliate banners.  If anyone uses my links to make a purchase, I will receive a percentage of all final sales.  I am going to donate 100% of the proceeds to animal welfare organizations.  This is a great way to shop your favorite online pet stores and give something to a worthy cause.
