I'm very upset right now. I was walking out to get the mail and
 my
neighbor's mail (he's out of town) when I heard a lot of yelling
 and turned around in
time to see a dog going after Mama Kitty - in MY yard on MY
 sidewalk. She
was wild with fear and well she should have been. I dropped the
 mail - it
went everywhere - and started running after that dog screaming
 N!

Mama climbed up the big oak more than 8 ft but then she fell and
 hit the
ground hard and that horrible dog picked her up in his mouth.
 She's just a tiny
thing. She got away and ran up the arbor in the back that has to
 be 10ft
tall and I chased that sorry black dog away. I got her down from
 the arbor and
she ran to the backyard - terrified.

I just stood with her a moment and talked to her and then she ran
 to the
back window pawing to get in. I picked her up and carried that
 sweet girl
inside and she's in here now with eyes fully dilated. Keeps
 looking out the
window. With FeVL she does NOT need this kind of stress.

Those sorry neighbors haven't even checked to see if Mama is ok.
 I am
furious but trying to be calm for her sake. I don't think she has
 any broken skin
or broken bones but it is probably too soon to tell if she is
 really hurt
because she is going on adrenalin. I've a good mind to say
 something to them
about it. I could hear the mother yelling 'who let the dog out'
  but that
doesn't do much for Mama Kitty.

Thanks for letting me rant - I am so upset.

Thank you all for your prayers. Popeye is wheezing and weak, but he still fought me tooth and nail when I tried to get some water, tuna water, and fancy feast down him. I don't think he got enough of any to do any good. I put that med. in a spoonful of fancy feast and even that doesn't always work. He's lost weight and I wonder if he's now hyper-t or something. He's also losing his hearing as well. He has a heart murmur too.Popeye ALWAYS has to be right in my face wherever I am. He sleeps beside me or on top of me. But last night he wouldn't sleep on the bed at all and keeps hiding under furniture. I feel like
that means he doesn't want to be bothered with a lot of tests, force feeding, med.s, etc :( But then again, even wrapped ina towel he fought hard to keep me from feeding him anything or getting any water down him. So I just don't know. I'm very sad. I've had Popeye since he was about 4 weeks old. He was at the shelter WITHOUT a mother in December. I would like nothing more -- but she would not be happy. She spent
the night inside last night...and she stays inside in winter...but she was an
outdoor cat when she adopted me and decided to live on my front porch and she is
not happy when she has to stay indoors on beautiful days. All the
neighbors will tell you that if she leaves my porch at all - it is only to go
into the yard and she never leaves the property unless I walk over to a
neighbors house and then she follows me.

I'm torn about it but she would be very unhappy as a strictly indoor
cat.

Re: Frustrated with Vets in AZ

2006-08-18 Thread Precious Pets, Almost Home
Dear Karen:

You may want to talk to the vet personally instead.
The first thing I thought was the receptionist new or
fairly new? The receptionist could be uninformed! I
use several vets all the time. I can spot the new
personnel just by the way they handle me in different
situations.

Actually, at my favorite vet clinic for the longest I
could not stand the desk personnel. I had to learn to
ignore them because I love the vets themselves! Now
that the desk personnel got to know me which took a
considerable period of time, they are wonderful! I
especially can tell when there is new personnel at the
desk there because of their attitude.

I mostly lurk on this list because of the amount of
rescue work I do. There is some weeks that I can read
the messages everyday and some weeks I do not have
time to read any! Excuse me of for asking this
question! I do not know if you do cat rescue or not?
Do you know any local volunteers for cat rescue in
your area? They may know a vet to recommend that will
treat your kitties.I have had customers from the
PETsMART where we use their adoption center call me to
ask me what vet I use for my cats. I am more then
happy to call them back and refer a vet according to
their cat(s) needs.

I hope you find a vet soon that you will feel
comfortable and secure with treating your cats!

Re: popeye is sick

2006-08-18 Thread Nina
You and Popeye are in my thoughts and prayers. It's such a difficult
time when you know they are seriously sick and refuse help. Having him
from 4 weeks old, (such a tiny little angel), and the fact that he's
such a momma's boy in every other respect (than medicating) makes all
this so hard on you. A good bit of the time I feel like I'm part cat,
but when it comes to them making the decision to not allow us to
intervene in medical problems, well, I have such a hard time accepting
that. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is nothing at all, (except love
them and accept them). Are you bringing him in to the vet today? Maybe
there will be something they can prescribe in an injection that will be
easier to administer. If you decide to bring him home with you, ask
them for some Valium. I've given it to kitties that are in transition
and it helps them to relax when they are distressed. Simon, a feral
kitty friend of mine was suffering greatly, holding on to life in a body
that had just plan worn out. Valium, (just a touch of it), helped him
to relax enough to let go of the physical and pass peacefully. I'm so
sorry that you and Popeye are suffering. I know from your previous
posts that you have done your best to make peace with whatever may
happen, (since you haven't been able to medicate him the way you'd
hoped). None of that matters when we come down to what seems to be the
end of our time with them. I'm praying that you are wrong, that he will
bounce back and start to feel better. We are all here for you and Popeye.

Blessings and love,
Nina

Everybody Cross Your Fingers, Tones And Paws For Sheri!!

2006-08-18 Thread Precious Pets, Almost Home
Hey Everybody!

We got a nibble for Sheri last night! A woman called
my voice mail inquiring how urgent was Sheri
situation. I explained that recently, Sheri's foster
home gave us notice that she had to be out before the
Labor Day weekend. The foster home shorten the amount
of time they originally given us! Which means she
would be put back in a cage which is ideally not
something we want to do! The woman asked if Sheri was
in any threat of being put to sleep which I explained
no. We were hoping to place Sheri directly from the
foster home to her forever home to minimize her
stress.

The woman talked with me for about an hour. She has a
FeLV household and she seems to be quite cat suave'!
We are suppose to meet tonight at the foster home to
meet the prospective owners and to show Sheri. Sheri
is a little shy! She will not show well outside of
her regular environment besides her stress will go up!
So cross your fingers, toes, paws and whatever you
can think of for Sheri that this goes well!

By the way, Sheri is listed on the FeLV adoption board
if you want to see her.

Re: :-(

I'm so pleased to hear that Mama is eating and playing and seems to
have escaped injury. I completely understand why you are so upset.
What a terrible thing to have happened. I just want to point out
though, how incredibly lucky you guys are that that dog wasn't a
killer. It could have been far worse as I'm sure you realize. The
fact that the dog had her in his mouth and Mama is still here, tells me
that as awful as the whole thing was, the dog was actually playing. He
probably has no idea of the upset he's caused. As for the
neighbors... There's no sense in alienating them with your anger. I
would try a different tact, (if you are able). Maybe it's because I'm
a dog trainer, maybe it's because I used to be a "dog person", but I
think it might be better to enlist the help of his owners in teaching
him that cats are not to be chased, or treated like toys. It sounds
like they were trying to keep him confined, maybe they'll be more
careful in the future, but I wouldn't count on it. Is this a friendly
dog with people? Does he like you? If they would train him in
obedience, then you could work with him a little bit to get him to
respect you. That way the next time you see him on your property,
you'd have some control. You may not be willing to look at it from
this angle, it's just a suggestion. If training him isn't possible,
then I'd make sure the garden hose is at the ready at all times.
Whenever you see the dog, hose him but good and tell him to stay out of
your territory.

I understand not wanting to keep Mama confined. I understand the
quality over quantity thing, but you have a dangerous situation at your
house. If this happens again, and you're not so lucky next time, you'd
never be able to forgive yourself. Mama may be more willing to stay in
the house now. I'd try it again. I have a habitat made out of chain
link dog runs and topped with wood and netting on the side of my
house. I have shelves and carpeted poles leading to my bedroom window
and the crawl space beneath the house is open. Is it possible to build
something like that at your house? You said Mama likes to hang out on
your porch, could you screen that in and make it a safe place for her
to be outside?

Hugs to you and Mama Kitty. What an ordeal!
Nina

Those sorryneighbors haven't even checked to see if Mama is
ok. I am furious but trying to be calm for her sake. I don't think
she has any broken skin or broken bones but it is probably too soon to
tell if she is really hurt because she is going on adrenalin. I've a
good mind to say something to them about it. I could hear the mother
yelling 'who let the dog out' but that doesn't do much for Mama
Kitty.

would be put back in a cage which is ideally not
something we want to do! The woman asked if Sheri was

no. We were hoping to place Sheri directly from the

stress.

The woman talked with me for about an hour. She has a

We are suppose to meet tonight at the foster home to

meet the prospective owners and to show Sheri. Sheri
is a little shy! She will not show well outside of
her regular environment besides her stress will go up!
So cross your fingers, toes, paws and whatever you

By the way, Sheri is listed on the FeLV adoption board
if you want to see her.

Hi Karen,
Ask your vet for a referral to a board certified Internist. All vets
have specialty clinics that they send their patients to when there's a
condition that GP medicine can't deal with. There is a much better
chance that an Internist will be better educated on felv. The
Internist might be able to recommend a GP vet for you too. Precious

educate them and the staff about felv whenever possible. I know a lot

looking for a GP vet that I can trust and count on so I understand your

Re: :-(

2006-08-18 Thread etrent

Thank you, Nina. Mama Kitty stayed inside last night.
She went out briefly this morning but I convinced her to stay in the
house today while I am at work and she seemed content in her little
nest on the couch.

I have never seen this dog before (although I suspect that it is one I
hear barking all the time) and honestly haven't seen that neighbor
before. The dog was totally out of control. They were
running after it and it was going crazy - headed straight to my house.

I do believe they were trying to keep the dog confined because the
mother was yelling at the son for letting the dog get out. I
never said anything. I noticed that a car in front of their house
had all four doors open for a couple of hours so there were probably
some upsetting things going on at that house and as upset as I was, I
just had to let it go. There is just no way to know what they may
be going through.

I know that they didn't mean any harm and the dog probably didn't mean
any harm - but it could have killed her. Mama Kitty is great
friends with Brittany, the lab next door...and Levi, the dachsie across
the street. They are all pals and they kiss noses and get along
well. I'm sure she wasn't accoustomed to being viewed as a toy
rag doll. I'm hoping that I will be able to use this opportunity
to convince Mama Kitty that she would be safer as an indoor cat.

The screened living area idea is a brilliant one and I will give this
some thought. I think she would be perfectly content with that
arrangement.

hugs right back,

elizabeth

have escaped injury.

2006-08-18 Thread TenHouseCats
preciouspets is, i think, being way too kind and naive. as a human with chronic illnesses, i know very well what a problem front-office people can be with trying to control access to the doc, and how often it turns out that the doc has no idea about whatinformation/lack of it their office staff is giving out. i'm sure that's the case with some vets as well, but doubt that this is the explanation here.

MEDICAL information usually isn't dispensed by the staff, so when one of them is so specific about something, i'm betting (HEAVILY, and i'm not a betting type), that's from the top down, and part of the givens at that practice: FeLV is spread by cats looking at each other across the street, EVERYONE knows thatand, in my never-humble opinion (nina and barb, you do NOT have to jump in and affirm that), when the staff is so misinformed, it's an equally good bet that the vet is not the type to listen to a mere client.

were you ever able to talk to one of the vets from the feline practitioners list? the idea of an internist is probably a good one, tho i wouldn't have thought of it just because i've never had reason to consult one.

on the FIV lists, we're gonna be putting together a packet of information to give out to shelters, rescues, individuals with the facts about FIV--theoretically, this'll be available for vets as well, tho i'm less confident that the latter group will be as receptive as the former ones. finding a vet who will listen and learn is the key, but it can be a difficult task. i'm not sure what the answer is other than to call every office and ask what their policy about treating FeLVs is if you get even a remotely positive--or even neutral--response from the office staff, i'd say that'd be a place with potential

i'm just so glad you found us, opinionated folks that we are, and arefighting so hard for your little darling!

Heeheehee. Yes, Nina, you have pushed it too far. :)

Not for lack of want, but budget/living space/landlord-wise 2 is my cap. And honestly, 2 below the knee and me is a pretty good fit. One day though...one day. :)

I took Satch to the vet today because he's picked up Azrael's cold. I tried my best to keep their air separate, but I guess that I wasn't that good. I washed and wore different outfits, but a small apartment is what it is.

Anyway, I kind of freaked when he started making the same sounds on Wednesday nightthat Az had (the horky cough), even though his energy levels were high, had no fever (which I compulsively started checking), and was still consta-ravenous, but it had taken her so fast. The vet (not my normal, but another in the office) was very nice, he assured me that Satch was doing great and that I'd done the right thing to come in - the wait-and-see approach (oneof my personal favorites) doesn'talways end so well with positive cats, so he put Satch on Clavamox and an herb (um, it's a liquidWestern Herb?or something) to keep it from progressing. He was very confident, and like with theanimals that made me feel better. So we'll see. Satch loves visiting places, so he was happy to meet a new person, even if he got poked in the toosh for the third time in one morning.

This new vet also read my mind and when I asked if it was crazy to contemplate adopting another, he said no, that my odds have got to turn at some point! I was like, you ain't kiddin' mister.

Satch is coughing

2006-08-18 Thread Nina
Oh for God's sake, Satch better be okay. With situations like this I
usually stop praying to Spirit and start threatening :). You did good
taking him in right away. It sounds like you met a nice new vet in the
process and he knows about the 'don't wait and see approach for a pos',
that's a good sign! I like that he was encouraging you to adopt another
too. Yep, I like his attitude. Find out what the herb is that he put
Satchmo on and let us know what it is, we're always looking for benign
ways to improve immune response, (I assume that's what the herb is
for?). How is Satchmo doing now? Any more coughing? Are you positive
it wasn't just a hairball? Keep us informed,

Nina

I'm glad to hear that Mythic is doing better - bless his dear little
chin. I'm laughing about the food 24/7...if I let the bowls get too low -
I get a 22lb hellion pouncing on my tummy in the middle of the night :0)
Cat's are such wonderful creatures.

I've been scrubbing his chin with Mythic's allergy shampoo, and it's

it). Scrubbed the feeder too, gonna buy some bleach and do it really good this
weekend though! He's never had a reaction to the plastic before, but yeah,
I've heard that too, that plastic causes acne. Hopefully it will clear up,
because he's IMPOSSIBLE to live with without an auto feeder, he MUST have
food, 24/7, or there's hell to pay! LOL! If worse comes to worse, I suppose I
could wrap the bowl part his chin touches with aluminum foil.

Animal control is all but non-existent here. There are a lot of
advantages to living outside of city jurisdiction but this is not one of
them.

Mama Kitty seems to be doing well tonight. That is a small miracle
considering what I witnessed yesterday with that horrible dog. She's
inside for the most part and I've written some people in town to see who is the
person to call about converting my porch to a screened in affair. It just
wouldn't be right to deprive her of her fresh air and sunshine.

No sign of life at that neighbor's house. I think my intuition was
correct about unhappy things going on at that house.

I emailedmy vet tech--who - though she is rather harsh and
straightforward sometimes -has my complete trust. Consulted with her
about what to look for in the injury department and about local contractors for
making modifications to this house for Mama Kitty. I just can't see
putting Mama through the stress of a vet visit if I cannot point to specific
symptoms.

There is a lot to be said for Feliway spray. I found some online for
$16.99 and it is a little spray bottle of wonders. With eight cats I
amnostranger to sibling rivalry and "hierarchical bantering" (and I
say that euphemistically...)...so the Feliway has been a Godsend. There
were no incidents while I was away today...no accidents..no inappropriate
marking or shredding.

I don't have any problem standing my ground with the neighbor...but timing
is everything and I think I will watch and wait for the right opportunity now
that thingsare calm.

[Fwd: You must read this]

2006-08-18 Thread Belinda

Just got this mail. I am almost in shock. This is something I
never knew could happen. Just alerting you. If you'd like you can tell
others. I would never have believed this could happen.

Dear Diane,

I think you told me you wanted to know what the results of the
necropsy were on Layla, so here goes. The vet said she had no broken
bones, and that all of her internal organs were fine, and that there
was no bleeding in the brain, or tumor. It mystified her as to why
Layla died until we told her how we found her, with her body lying on a
low box on the closet floor and her head resting on the floor of the
closet. Her conjecture is that Layla must have accidentally fallen,
either from the closet shelf or perhaps on the top of the clothes
getting down from the shelf, and fallen, which was a major stressor on
her which caused her to go into shock, which is how we found her (in
shock, that is). She did not cry out, as many cats in shock do, but
she had the unusual breathing that alerted us to the fact that there
was a cat in trouble in the closet. We did not hear the fall, as we
had been in the other room with the television on, and had just walked
into our bedroom with the broken closet door when we heard the
breathing. I called a breeder who is a retired vet, and she concurred
with my vet's idea of what happened, and said that a stressed out cat
can go into shock very quickly. I also asked the breeder of the kitten
we just got from her, and she is a medical doctor who also knows quite
a bit about the physiology of cats, and she confirmed what the other
two had said, and told me some stories of some similar things happening
to other cats in other catteries and rescue foster homes. She too said
that cats are delicate creatures, and even an altercation with another
cat can be enough of a stressor to a cat to cause it to go into shock
and die. So, I am trusting that I have the correct answer as to why
Layla died.

I haven't been on my website yet--just can't bring myself to do it
yet, but hopefully this weekend I will have some time to change your
banners. The memorial link to your graphics page is lovely, and I
shall be happy to display it, and I hope that all of the links I have
to you on my website will cause a lot of traffic to your site. You
have such a wonderful website, and as much as I look at it, I still
haven't finished looking at all there is to see and read.

By the way, we buried Layla next to her beloved Ozzy. They were
inseparable in life, and now they are in death. I can't help but
picture them playing in the Lord's lap, having a wonderful time, with
Kali, Tess and Jazz right there with them.

Thank you for the work you are doing on my tribute graphic for
Layla. I look forward to hearing from you.

Blessings and peace,

Leigh
