Re: Jimi Too Cool problem

2006-12-18 Thread tamara stickler
Anne,

Sorry I didn't see your post until this morning. How are things today?

In answer to your question, yes, MANY animals go off to be on their own when
they are about to die. As a hospice nurse for my Aunt Marge explained...(in
regard to her..) if you need to be with her, just keep still next to her, or
if you have to touch...rest your hand, don't move it. Its better for the
departing if you are still and silent because each time you speak, or stroke,
you force them to refocus on this world...instead of what they have to do,
where they are going. That's why many animals run off to be on their own to
pass into the next life, it makes it easier to do so without the earthly
distractions.

God Bless you and Jimmi Too Cool. Know that you are in my prayers..always.

  HUGS

  Love,
  Tamara

  Hi everyone,
My Jimi Too Cool, 10 year old black domestic shorthair with feline
leukemia, is in his last stage of life, I am sure. He has been slowly going
downhill. He is just bones with fur and won't eat. His pain is controlled
with depo-medrol and tramadol and he is not in distress, pain is under control,
but he mostly just sleeps a lot. Well, tonight he made a break for it and went
outside and won't come in and it is at freezing temp now. 32 degrees, I
believe. No wind, though. I have cat-fence-in so he is not straying but I
can't reach him. Every time I go out to try and bring him in, he runs for
cover under the deck.

Have any of you run into this problem? I have heard that cats and dogs
like to go outside to die. Could that be it, I wonder? I am so worried about
him as he is so skinny and he is not used to this cold weather. He can come
in, though, if he would like, as I put the cat door back into the window, just
for him, although I had it stowed for the cold weather until spring. I am
trying to relax because I know he could come in if he wanted to so he must not
mind it outside. Sigh

 Thanks, everyone.

Hi everyone,
My Bandy has been very sick this week..First, we are still fighting the
ringworm, but it is our least worry for now..He starting getting limp in one
rear leg as he did back in the summer..So I took him in on Tues. and he
received basically same treatment as in the summer...He got some dex, adequan,
B vit inj, and torbutrol for pain..His temp was 103.5 which is the highest it
has been since Aug..he did seem to respond as he came home, ate ok and
drank...climbed up on his tower and would purr and talk to me..Then on Fri. or
really late Thurs night, he wouldn't eat at all or move about much..So I took
him back to the doctor Fri afternoon...His temp was still around 103 which
could explain the bad appetite, but I didn't know what else to do and still
don't...
So the vet tech called the Doctor since she is off on Fri..we ran a complete
blood chem and profile and thyroid...He hasn't had all that since June so we
were due...It didn't help us much either...Surprising enough his PCV was 37.5
which is great...the WBC was low normal...some other blood values grans and
monocytes were off which I don't know what all that means..his platlets were
very low...Anyone know anything about that
I'm really scared for him now...He doesn't seem to have URI or UTI and no
mouth ulcers..no stomach trouble either..He did have a loose stool couple of
times the other day. Probably from all the meds on Tues..
I can't get him to eat...I have tried everything...He will eat a few bites at
a time and won't drink any broth either..I don't know what else to
try...Please let me know what you all think.
He also got 250cc subq fluids..today and 2 different antibiotic injections
along with 5mg pred which we are going on for a week..and if he won't eat I am
to up it to 10mg..also oxazepam for appetite stimulant...
Please keep him in your prayers..
I hope all your kitties are doing well...we send head butts to all..

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for all the great info.

I think my biggest question is about them craving what they are missing -
mine crave BREAD. If I bring bread into the house I have to lock it up
immediately - just putting it in a cabinet with the door closed does NOT
work because they will open the door. I think they would rather have bread
than anything. But it is bad for them, yes? Being made of grain and
all

I highly recommend a teaspoon of Nutri-Cal or Vita-Cal twice a day. It
boosts the calories, and most cats eat it by choice. You can also increase
the fat in her diet by adding high fat supplements (like those made for good

results).

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=2014N=2002+113617

A digestion aid can help her to get more calories out of what she does eat
too:

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=3391N=2002+113753

Also consider a liquid supplement Like Cat Sure, Rebound, or Clinicare:
http://www.allivet.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=12070Show=ExtInfo

You wont have to get her to eat much more if you add enough calories to
the amount she's already eating. I've never had a problem with mixing
Missing Link or Vita-cal into the wet food, the cats LIKE the flavors, at
least mine have not refused to eat it with it in there. I have a tub of a
supplement called Wild Trax, it's for supplementing wild hybrid cats that
get raw meat with bones as their primary food, anyways, I got it for the
bengals when I did that rescue 2 years ago. Sometimes I just unscrew the lid
and leave the jar open on the table, and the cats come up and lick some of
it out if they want (it's a very meaty smelling powder). Like all animals,
they will crave what they are missing (think a salt-mineral block for
livestock). If she doesn't eat the powdered supplements, you can always
syringe her the Vita-Cal mixed with the Rebound, and add a liquid vitamin
supplement like Lixo-Tinic or Pet-Tinic. There's not much you can't find in
the supplement world if you look hard enough.

So, that's what I would do, try the Missing Link and Vita-Cal mixed into
her wet food first, if she refuses it, then get the Rebound, and Pet-Tinic,
and mix those with the Vita-Cal and then syringe the liquid. You can't
syringe the Missing Link, it's too grainy and doesn't dissolve in liquid.
I'm not sure about the digestion aid stuff, I've never used it personally.
It appears that it might dissolve in liquid, and it looks crystalline in the
photo.

WalMart has a vitamin supplement in a spray bottle in the cat food section..
It samon and other fish oil and etc. but it seems to help one old FeLV+
that has a craving for strange stuff, licking news paper etc.
And it seems to improve the flavor for others that are picky eaters...
I thought my old guy was starting his down hill slide a year ago when he
started

the licking.. Some say its a sign of anemia... But I have been giving him
probably double the recommended amount on the label and he is still hanging
in there about the same as he was a year ago with only occasional interferon
and antibiotics

I let my Doobie cat sometimes eat the middle out of a piece of white bread,
he loves it too! No ill health effects so far, of course, it's an occasional
treat, not an everyday thing. It could be he's missing some nutrient found
in bread, most commercially prepared breads are made using enriched flour,
which means they add several vitamins and minerals to it. Could be something
in there. Of course, there's also just plain weird cravings too, Doobie also
LOVES marshmallows... but there's NOTHING in them he could possible be
missing in his diet, LOL (unless sugar and cornstarch have something in them
I'm not aware of)! I do give him the occasional mini marshmallow too.

2006-12-18 Thread anne
Dear kind fellow cat lovers,
Jimi Too Cool has passed over to the other side with the help of his
favorite vet, Dr. Greene, at 11:30AM today. Things went pretty smoothly and
Dr. Greene was very kind and sympathetic.

Jimi had suffered from the side effects of feline leukemia for half of his
10 year lifetime. It started with painful stomatitis and travelled down the
esophagus and beyond, making it very difficult for him to eat. In the last
several months, he has gone downhill, becoming skin and bones, practically,
even though he could eat well and a lot when his steroid shots kicked in. This
last weekend, he became like the walking dead and cried out pitifully now and
then. His eyes looked tired and sad and glazed. The tramadol that was added
to his meds wasn't helping anymore, either, it seemed.

I have been blessed to have my boy for so long, especially in light of his

brave, loving, smart, quirky and beautiful boy. He has my heart. He was very

machine location on a busy, dangerous street, up to and including his death.
At our first meeting at the bank, he just sauntered over and sat beside me

Jimi liked to headbutt us often and with force. He also liked to hang

Dear kind fellow cat lovers,
Jimi Too Cool has passed over to the other side with the help of his
favorite vet, Dr. Greene, at 11:30AM today. Things went pretty smoothly and
Dr. Greene was very kind and sympathetic.

Jimi had suffered from the side effects of feline leukemia for half of
his 10 year lifetime. It started with painful stomatitis and travelled down
the esophagus and beyond, making it very difficult for him to eat. In the
last several months, he has gone downhill, becoming skin and bones,
practically, even though he could eat well and a lot when his steroid shots
kicked in. This last weekend, he became like the walking dead and cried out
pitifully now and then. His eyes looked tired and sad and glazed. The
tramadol that was added to his meds wasn't helping anymore, either, it
seemed.

Probably a router is out somewhere along the route between the list server
and you, could be a storm a hundred miles away effecting the connectivity.
Computers and the internet is just weird sometimes, it's a huge system, and
it kind of flows like a river, if one channel gets blocked, the water flows
around into a different one, but it gets delayed and sometimes things along
the new channel get flooded. Since it's only effecting a few members, not
everyone, it's probably not anything wrong with the list server, it's
probably a router along the way somewhere.

Jimi will never, ever leave you. Right now he is resting peacefully, regaining
his strength. But he has one eye open, watching you and his whole heart is
loving you for everything you have done and been to him and especially for
letting him take that time outside. He needed to gather his strength and
collect his thoughts. It takes strength to leave this world and is was hard
for him to leave you. He deeply appreciates the help. You did everything just
right. When you are ready he will visit you in your dreams. Know that the
visits are real and enjoy them.

and has always done his best to please me.

Bless the hands that send him to you,
for they are doing so in love and compassion,
freeing him from pain and suffering.

Grant me the strength not to dwell on my loss.
Help me remember the details of his life
with the love he has shown me.
And grant me the courage to honor him
by sharing those memories with others.

Let him remember me as well
and let him know that I will always love him.
And when it's my time to pass over into your paradise,
please allow him to accompany those
  who will bring me home.

  Thank you, Lord,
for the gift of his companionship
and for the time we've had together.

  And thank you, Lord,
  for granting me the strength
to give him to you now.

What a beautiful tribute. I am saddened for you that Jimi had to leave this
world. I know it leaves an empty space in your heart. Gentle crossings to
Jimi.

In the last
several months, he has gone downhill, becoming skin and bones, practically,
even though he could eat well and a lot when his steroid shots kicked in. This
last weekend, he became like the walking dead and cried out pitifully now and
then. His eyes looked tired and sad and glazed. The tramadol that was added
to his meds wasn't helping anymore, either, it seemed.

I have been blessed to have my boy for so long, especially in light of
his disease, so for that I am very grateful. He was a noble, silly, friendly,
brave, loving, smart, quirky and beautiful boy. He has my heart. He was very
much a COOL boy all his life, too, from the time I scooped him up from an ATM
machine location on a busy, dangerous street, up to and including his death.
At our first meeting at the bank, he just sauntered over and sat beside me
calmly and resolutely and happily, making it known he was not leaving my side
and that was how it stayed.

Jimi liked to headbutt us often and with force. He also liked to hang
upside down like a bat and he also did his camel imitation for our
entertainment, making his back hump greatly, as he was a tall and solid boy
with long lanky legs. He was also somewhat like a dog, following us on our
heels often.

Phaewry and Marylyn, thank you for your recent posts concerning Jimi. I
want to answer them when I feel a bit stronger. Tamara, thank you, dear
friend. Love and hugs to you, too, as always.

I wanted to send the following poem along with this message because it
reminded me so much of my boy, Jimi Too Cool, and helped me get through the
euthanasia.
Anne and Simms and Sophie and Jimi Too Cool, in spirit in my heart always

  A Parting Prayer

Dear Lord, please open your gates
and call St. Francis
to come escort this beloved companion
across the Rainbow Bridge.

Assign him to a place of honor,

and has always done his best to please me.

How old was the little girl, she was lucky to have had you to care for her all

My little gentle soul, Lizzie passed away this morning – she is the sweetest
and kindest and most affectionate soul I have ever counted – I have bottle fed
her from the day one and it’s been such a pleasure to have met her – I miss her
just so terribly and I feel so empty all over….. please pray for her peace.

Hi Michelle and all,

I'm not quite sure what's happening either. It seems to be affecting
mostly AOL users (and a few Earthlink users, as well). In the past,
AOL temporarily blocked FeLVTalk mail because they thought it was
spam. Could those of you on AOL please contact them to see if this is
happening again? I'd really appreciate it. My apologies for the
inconveniences, and I hope we get this straightened out soon.
Kind regards to all.

New cat on the block

2006-12-18 Thread Lilash3
So, I've just recently added to this list and have been reading just about
everything I get in order to try and get the hang of things. My name is
Ashley and I have a Felv+ cat named Mr. Kitten. I got him from our local SPCA
in
Jan 2004 and he will be turning four this upcoming January. Shortly after
bringing him home Mr. Kitten had a runny nose that just wouldn't go away, so
off to the first vet. This vet did no testing at all, just sent me away with
antibiotics. Second vet ran all sorts of tests and this is when I learned
that he was Felv+ The vet's first response was euthanasia, but since Mr.
Kitten
was an extremely happy (and healthy, for the most part) cat, I decided to
take him back home. Upon hearing this decision the vet told me how the
research on the internet is wrong and there is no cure and all the supposed
treatments are just a waste of money. So I was a little put off from ever
trying
anything. I've recently been doing a lot more research and getting more
involved and I am starting to see that there are different alternatives out
there.
As of right now I haven't been giving Mr. Kitten anything other than his
regular food and water, but like I said, I'm new to the homeopathic world. I
just watned to let you guys out there know that hearing such stories are so
inspiring and it's really nice to know there are things that actually work and
help. Just recently Mr. Kitten is becoming a little more picky about his
food, one day he scarfs down everything in front of him and other days he has
no
desire for anything. It makes me a little nervous because I know that loss
of appetite could lead to many other downfalls, but hopefully he is just being
a brat. But anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself and Mr. Kitten and
let you guys know how grateful I am for people like you!
