[Felvtalk] more about Kia

2010-05-01 Thread kia
Hello again.
My oldest cat Kia lost weight over a period of time and I just thought maybe it
was because she was old. She hasn't acted sick at all. Back in November my
oldest male cat Gabriel got sick and stopped eating. When he wouldn't take
water I knew it was bad. We rushed him to the vet and the bloodwork showed he
was in renal failure. The vet said it was too late to do anything and we had
him put down. Afterwards I starting thinking about Kia since she is older and
thought I better have her checked out. Due to finances I was unable to take her
to the vet until a few weeks ago. I told the vet she was losing weight and he
assumed she had a thyroid problem. After the blood work came in he told me her
lymphocytes were really high and she had an ear infection and a tooth
infection. We went through some antibiotics and I just took her in last week to
check her blood again. This is when he told me her lymphocytes have
dramatically increased just since the last workup
a couple weeks ago. He is convinced she has circulating leukemia/lymphoma. He
wants to put her on steroids and an antibiotic. She is also on blood pressure
meds right now. Those two vet visits have wiped out the budget and I am just
praying nothing happens to her. I don't understand how she got leukemia though.
She is an indoor only cat with no contact with cats besides our others. When
she was a kitten she was tested negative and even got a few vaccines for it.
Now I am wondering if this is what killed Gabriel. And I wonder if the other
cats are infected too. I already have a cat with kidney disease. All of our
pets are over age 11.
Thank you for your help.

My cats were diagnosed at ages 13 and 14. I can't recall why the vet tested
them at that time. They were both at the vet's office so it was likely an
annual check-up. Stripes was sick on and off his entire life. Squeaky was
never sick (except for not feeling well for a few days after his annual
feline leukemia vaccination). I have no idea why the vet continued to
vaccinate him and why I never asked about it. This was over 15 years ago.

Welcome...there are some very well informed people on this board who will
give you a lot of info. Being diagnosed at 16 is a bit unusual--was there a
particular reason why the vet checked her? Has she been ill? My own
Tucson, was diagnosed at age 4-5 after a few days of not eating like she
usually does & looking real "pale".

he had leukemia too.

I do not like dogs at all, but I'd never tell anyone I hated dogs.
To each his own.. Give me a cat or lots of cats any day to even
one dog, but you are right, there are many people who hate cats and
are quite vociferous about it...I find this very upsetting.

You can be certain he wouldn't have said he hated dogs. But it's OK &
acceptable to hate cats. It's funny, when people come to the shelter I
usually ask them whether they're looking for a cat or a dog. I can't tell
you how many times someone has responded, "Dogs. I hate cats." But I've
never heard anyone say, "Cats. I hate dogs."

Was watching GMA Weekend this AM.  During a segment on stuff made out of cat
food cans Bill Weir said he hated cats.  Just had to respond to ABC News
with the following post.

Just wanted you to know I will no longer watch GMA Weekends after Bill's
comment today that he hates cats. I don't need to waste my time watching
anyone who hates a living creature. I do not like rats, mosquitoes or
cockroaches but would never say on national TV that I hated them.

I spend my free time involved in cat rescue and TNR of ferals/hard strays. I
do not expect cat friendly stories but I sure did not expect to hear an
anchor say he hated cats. You can be sure I will share Bill's comments with
various on-line cat groups.
