Tonya, Wow! I didn't know that FeLV cats could live as long as your cats have! That's amazing. As you've stated, you never really know how long you'll have with them. What cute names you've chosen for your felines! I don't know if I mentioned it before, but I got my second cat (that died recently) from our vet as well. They rescued him and suggested that I may want to take him in because I already had a FeLV positive cat. They were just as upset as I was when Parker passed away. My vet buried him in his yard and got him a headstone. He was one loved kitty! I do plan on taking in another positive someday (hopefully sooner rather than later!). I need a little bit more time to adjust to the loss of Parker, but want to rescue another one. I've been looking at this group's adoption page as well as Petfinder (under "special needs" cats) to see what next cat may need my help. Thanks again for your support and response. Unfortunately with this disease you just never know when or if they are ever going to get sick from the felv. I have a 10 year old positive here with me as I type right now. My first positive died around 8 years old. Others have lived lives into the high teens. The bad thing about it is that when it hits, it can hit fast, as you have discovered. I don't know about the new med.s. My cat is asymptomatic, so I don't give her any medicines, additives, etc just a good diet and a stress free (as possible) environment. My girl DD was left at my vet's office and my vet talked me into taking her because I already had a positive cat. Vet's call dropped off animals "door dumps" and I named her DD because my first positive cat was CC (because I found her living behind a coke machine). DD RULES my house. Your positive cat could have many years ahead of her. Christy, I'm so sorry to hear about your little Gray Kitty! When our cat Parker died earlier this month, I found out about LTCI afterwards. I wondered if I would have known about it sooner if I could have given him this medicine to help him. He was severely anemic towards the end with no red blood cells. From what you are indicating, it may get to a point with the illness where it's too late, huh? I wish you the best with the precious time you have left with your little one. It certainly makes you appreciate the time you have together, I'm sure. I recently made a picture book (using my laptop & digital photos) in memoriam to Parker. It was my special way of honoring him and whenever I look at it it's a mixed bag of emotions (sadness that he's gone, but happiness at the good memories we formed). I don't know if you have taken many pictures of your Gray Kitty, but it may help later to have all of those memories in picture form to look back and reminisce. Take care. *Hugs* Amber Amber, We have been using LTCI on our little Gray Kitty. However, since his diagnosis on September 6 of this year, the disease has progressed to his bone marrow. At this point we are not sure if anything will help him. We have not run into another situation such as ours. We took in a stray pregnant female in 2007, which tested negative for the FelV. She had 3 male kittens, which we all kept. Our Gray Kitty is the only one that has been diagnosed with the FelV. The other two test negative. Also Gray Kitty is the only one with the B type blood. We are so puzzled, shocked, and very saddened that he has come down with this disease. We know our time with him is so very precious. I just wanted to thank everyone who posted in response to my "LTIC/Imulan & Losing Kitties" message. Your support and well wishes were wonderful and encouraging! Others who don't know much about FeLV can have some interesting responses sometimes. I had one of my neighbors come over to feed our cat Neo for a couple of days while we were away once. She ended up coming down with some horrible rash around the same time all over her body. She instantly thought it was due to FeLV. Even her vet told her it wouldn't have caused those symptoms in people! I don't know if she ever found out the true cause of her skin condition, but again the first thought was to blame my cat! But I digress. Hopefully I'll find a cat sitter next time I go away that isn't fearful of the illness. We started Neo on the LTIC shots this past week. He's in good health now so hopefully it will prolong his life. Does anyone have experience with LTIC with their kitties? Hello everyone, I am new to this listserv, but wanted to thank all of you in advance for your insights and kindness! I recently adopted 2 FeLV positive cats, Neo and Parker (1 in April and 1 in September). I knew their lives would be cut short by the illness, but wanted to give them a happy, comfortable life before they left this world. Some friends and family members have given us grief over purposely adopting these sick kitties. I've heard things to the effect of "You'll be sad when they die" to "You're keeping a healthy cat from having a home." But I didn't (and still don't care) what the naysayers have to say. I know that I'm doing a good service to these cats that otherwise would be euthanized before they needed to be or would be without a loving home. Someone (who was in my corner) told me that she worked at a shelter once and no one would even play with the FeLV cats, let alone adopt them. This solidified my belief for the need of loving homes of these forgotten felines! Their happiness is more important than my sadness, as profound as it may be. I'm saddened to report that baby Parker (who we got more recently in September) died on November 8th. It was a sad death as he suddenly collapsed and died a couple of hours later in our home. It was late at night and the emergency vet closest to us was in surgery. Other vet services were an hour or more away. We saw him take his last few breaths and wanted to end his suffering sooner (but couldn't). But he died knowing (hopefully) that he was loved and that he didn't die alone. He was the sweetest cat ever! :( Our other cat, Neo is doing great! He's not showing any symptoms, has put on weight since we got him, and has a strong appetite! I recently read about LTIC/Imulan and told my vet about it. He didn't know too much about it as it's a newer medication, but I asked him to order some for Neo. It's quite expensive, but if I would have known about it sooner I would have tried it on little baby Parker to help him. Since Neo is quite healthy, I'm not sure what effect it will have on him, but I'd do anything to keep him as healthy as we can for as long as we can. I'd be most pleased if anyone tries this with their cat and could tell me how it works out. Also, did your cat have any symptoms before or were they asymptomatic before starting treatment?
