In my dream I reached out to touch a big purple glass ball - then it turned around and it was a grinning human skull on a dog's body. I just knew it was there to take all my cats so I threw a big candle at it. It said in a mocking voice, "You wouldn't hurt a dog, would you? Not a dog." Then I picked up a big stick and tried to hit it. It killed all my cats with the exception of a black and white one & I was very relieved that I'd managed to save one. Now that's what I call a stress dream. I don't even know if I'm going to go to work tomorrow. I just want to stay home and be quiet. Today it was Speckles. Not even 2 weeks ago it was Bridget, and 5 days before Bridget it was Baby Girl. A few weeks before that it was Frosty Paws. Re: [Felvtalk] Brillo and Desmond Are Anemic
When I called they said they tested for the parasites that cause the hemo. They didn't tell me the name of the test. I looked at the paperwork and it says they did a Hematocrit (PCV) and Complete Blood Count (CBC). All of these tests and information is new to me because my last vet gave up on my FeLV+ kitties in October when they tested positive. Not sure what all of this means for my babies but we go back on Wednesday and I plan on asking about this again. Thank you do much for your help and info. - Original Message From: Belinda Sauro To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Mon, March 22, 2010 3:31:10 PM Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] Brillo and Desmond Are Anemic The hemobartonella test is very, very hard to get a positive result on, it has to be taken at the precise moment the bugs are acting up or it will give a negative result. I know more than one cat that was positive but tested negative 4 or 5 times before they finally caught it. Those cats that were put on doxy did well, those that weren't some died. I will always put a cat that is anemic for an unknown reason on doxy to be on the safe side, especially a positive cat ... just my opinion but to me it isn't worth taking the chance of losing my furkid to something that is treatable. How is haemobartonellosis diagnosed? Sometimes the organism can be seen inside cells on a blood smear. To find them, a small drop of blood is spread over a microscope slide, stained and examined under the microscope. The number of organisms in the bloodstream can fluctuate dramatically. *There can be many observed in one sample, and a sample taken two hours later may reveal none.* A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) blood test to detect this hemotropic mycoplasma is available. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2102&aid=293 -- Belinda happiness is being owned by cats ... http://bemikitties.com http://BelindaSauro.com ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org

Right now they are both on the pred steroids. I called the vet today and she said they were both negative for the hemobartonella. So when she orignally put Brillo on doxy for a day it was before she got the negative test result for the hemo and had me take him off because of that result and because he was throwing it up. - Original Message From: Belinda Sauro To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Mon, March 22, 2010 11:35:24 AM Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] Brillo and Desmond Are Anemic Doxy is one of the best drugs for a kitty with possible hemobartonella which positive kitties seem very susceptible to. [Felvtalk] Brillo and Desmond Are Anemic
Hi everyone...haven't posted on her since I lost Nibbler in November...his brothers Brillo and Desmond are now both anemic. My boys are both about 8 months now and were born with FeLV. 3 weeks ago I noticed Brillo eating his litter and I checked his gums and they were pale. Took him to the vet and his rbc count was down to 12%. She started him on steroids and the following week it jumped upto 18%. I had hope. Last week his count fell down to 9% and she said he only had a week or two left to live. Its non regenerative anemia and she said the FeLV has spread to his bone marrow. He was doing so well and then it came out of nowhere. She's having me take him in on Wednesday to see if its "time"...I am heartbroken. He has been losing about 4 ounces of weight a week because he lost his appetite even though she started him on meds a week and a half ago to increase his appetite but they don't seem to be working. He still purrs everytime hes touched and jumps onto the window perch and onto our king bed to sleep on my lap. On top of all this, I noticed his brother Desmond licking the window last week and I checked his gums and they were a little pale. I took him to the vet and his rbc was only 12%. His bloodwork came back and his anemia is regenerative (the opposite of Brillo) plus he has a good appetite and weighs about 2 1/2 lbs more then Brillo. She also started him on steroids. I take him in on Wednesday to have his rbc rechecked. I am so afraid she is going to tell me my baby Brillo needs pts. When she told me he only had 1-2 weeks left my heart fell to my stomach...I'm still not over his twin Nibbler's passing...I have never bonded with any other pets like I have with my FeLV+ kitties Nibbler, Brillo and Desmond. ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org

I know this is a long shot, but I got two FeLV+ stray cats on the waiting list for a cat sanctuary near Harrisburg. She said she could probably take them in Jan or Feb. My problem is I need someone to take care of them until they can go there. The male got fixed today and female will be fixed tomorrow. I will drive them to you (I live 5-6 hours away) but I really need someone able to house them until they can in. I already have 8 cats (2 FeLV+) and a baby coming Feb 6th so I cannot afford this. I would love to be able to bring them to you to temp house at the end of this week. Please help. Re: [Felvtalk] PA or OH FeLV+ Cat Sanctuaries
Hmmm, maybe I will rethink the sanctuary idea. I don't want them to live a horrible life. Plus all the places I have contacted are full. I have an appointment to get the female fixed on the 22nd...a few days before that I have to start trying to catch her. I am getting a live trap. Shes friendly but you can't pick her up and put her in a cage. I am hoping they will keep her over the holiday to observe her and let her heal before I let her go back outside. I dont think its my place to make the choice to end her life...or the male cats life either. There are several people that care for them and feed them and its only those two cats that live there. I think I will just get them both fixed to prevent kittens and continue on with what we do. --- Frank & Sue Koren Wed, 09 Dec 2009 14:56:03 -0800 Is 10th life the sanctuary that was supposedly researching snake venom about two years ago? Amy- That's only an 1 1/2 from me! I would love her name and contact info please! Crystal Amy Thu, 19 Nov 2009 05:13:44 -0800 Hi Crystal, Are you far from Cornell University in NY? I recently took my cat to see an internal med there and have been incredibly pleased with her knowledge and compassion. She is the only one who has not given up on my leuk positive cat. I'd be happy to send you her name if it's a trip that you could make. Re: [Felvtalk] Kitten Problems - Please Help
Hi Belinda- All 3 kittens, Nibbler, Brillo and Desmond all got antibiotics when we got them at 4 weeks old. Brillo and Desmond kicked the upper resp after a couple weeks but Nibbler hasn't. He was on them for another 6 or 7 weeks after that but we had to take him off about 2 weeks ago because it was too much for his little system to handle. He is very small and his digestive system has been bad for awhile. The vet said that the antibiotics may have killed all the "good" bacteria in his system. That's why we have him on all the vitamins right now, but the poor thing is suffering from the constant runny eyes and nose. Crystal Belinda Sauro Wed, 18 Nov 2009 23:32:59 -0800 When my Frankie got an upper respiratory, he had it for a long time. Hi Diane- I am not sure how much my vet knows about FeLV. I am very thankful and grateful to have her help. She is very busy and always listens to my constant questions. However, she keeps telling me that its the FeLV running its course and there's nothing I can do. However, I've been reading everyone's messages on here and it seems sometimes there is something you can do so I am trying to get as much information as possible. I emailed two other vets yesterday that are 2 hours away to see if they are specialists on it. I live in NW PA and I'm finding it difficult to find any vet that has dealt with it a lot. I am laid off right now but if I have to scrape my pennies together and eat spaghetti for a month, I will. She did tell me that sometimes kittens can convert to negative but since Nibbler had such problems already it didn't look good for him. I am still trying everything to get him out of the slump and get some weight on him and maybe he can be as big and "healthy" as his 2 FelV + brothers. Crystal - Diane Rosenfeldt Wed, 18 Nov 2009 15:41:47 -0800 Hi, Crystal -- You'll get some great advice on this list. You guys are great for taking on this problem. I'm sorry Nibbler isn't doing so well. I guess my first (and only -- there are many more experienced people on this list to ask the others) question is how confident are you that your vet is up to speed on FeLV? That's kind of crucial here so that Nibbler gets the most knowledgeable care. Did your vet tell you that sometimes kittens convert to negative once their immune systems develop, and do you know if this is still an option for yours? Best of luck and good vibes for Nibbler and the rest. Re: [Felvtalk] Kitten Problems - Please Help
Hi Cougar Clan- My little ones are very spoiled and I believe lead a very stress free lifestyle. The only thing that I think stresses Nibbler out is getting his vitamins and Prt Tinic via liquid syringe orally. He doesn't like the taste at all and he needs this done a few times a day. I will look up Rescue Remedy and Feliway. Thank you very much for the kind words. They have brought me some comfort when my heart feels so broken. I have been very stressed since we found out that they were FeLV + and much more the past couple weeks since Nibbler's been having very bad days. Even though its very difficult and it breaks my heart, taking care of them is well worth it when Nibbler curls up on me and purrs. Sounds like Dixie had an amazing and happy life too. I live in a small town in NW PA so there aren't many options vet wise. However, I emailed two vets, one holistic and another I am hoping to be a specialist last night, that are both about 2 hours away. I am waiting for phone calls to see what they have to offer. Kittens and I might be making a road trip soon. Crystal Wed, 18 Nov 2009 15:35:13 -0800 Cougar Clan First, lessen the stress on him and on yourself and give him and the others the best food possible. Rescue Remedy and Feliway may help you and the kittens. Second, enjoy every minute you have with these babies. Don't look at calenders and wonder "what if" "when" or have self-doubts (almost impossible but try). Every one starts dying the minute they take their first breath. Make life as easy and fun and comfortable as you can for all you care about. Nibbler and his sibblings have a hard row ahead of them but think what their lives would be like if you and your husband hadn't cared? Dixie Louise lived 3 years when the vets were betting a much shorter time. She had everything I thought she might possibly want (with the exception of mice to chase and, had I known she was going to leave so suddenly, I might have gotten her the mice). She was full grown when she came into my life as a throw- away. She was the most wonderful little girl and I would not trade one second with her for anything. That time is well worth the pain. If you have a holistic vet in your area, seek her help. Dixie had her regular vets who are marvelous and she had a great holistic vet, Betty Boswell. I credit the combination of styles for her happy life. Blessings to you, your husband and the kittens. On Nov 18, 2009, at 5:21 PM, Crystal Proper wrote: Hi, my name is Crystal.
