I've always heard that you shouldn't leave a trapped cat for more than a couple hours. I usually withdrew all food by 6pm and then got up around 3 or 4am to set the traps. Dear Chris Bless you for helping these little sweethearts. The wonderful former listmember Hideyo told me this trick years ago when I needed to transfer a trapped cat to a cat carrier. It worked like a charm, and hopefully it will work for a kennel too. It's based on the fact that, in her vast experience, cats in a light place will always be drawn to a dark place! Basically, here's what you do: First, trap cat. Then, don't cover the trap with blanket or anything--leave it uncovered. Position the trap so that its door (see note below) is positioned head-on against the open entrance of the kennel. Cover the entire kennel and the join where the kennel and trap meet with a dark blanket or towel. Raise trap door. Cat should walk from the light, airy trap into the dark kennel. Mine did exactly that, and did it immediately. I was amazed! Note: It's a while since I've used a trap but as I recall the back of a trap has a door that you can raise directly vertically (as opposed to at an angle). This vertical door is of course the end that you wd place against the kennel so that there's no space the cat can escape through--just a direct walkway into the kennel! Just in case the cat did escape, and I had to do the chase-and-catch routine, I set everything up in the bathroom. As the floor space was too small to place the trap and carrier end to end, I put a large piece of board over my bathtub and placed the trap and carrier end to end on that. LOL Today I set the trap and put some fried chicken and fish. I was told to cover the trap so they can't see the food from the back. I also put a sheet of newspaper inside at the entrance w. some treats to sort of lure them in. I saw Mom today but she didn't go to eat. I'm hoping they come back. Does anyone have advice? Also, I have one trap and a big dog kennel so if I trap one, I'm not sure if I should try to get it into the dog kennel-not sure how to do this. Any and all advice would be most appreciated! I put a cut off yardstick under the door and through the openings on each side of the door. The yardstick or other stick runs through the top or second down openings on either side of the door, when it is open. The door on mine swings up. Good luck! It is one thing to trap a cat, transport it in the trap to a safe, sheltered place (in my case a closed garage with a towel, blanket etc over the cage to help calm the cat) and leaving a trapped cage in the open where it can be frightened if not harmed by other critters or by mean spirited people. I would never try to get a feral cat to a vet without some sort of restraint--for my protection and the cat's. If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow man. I always trap during the day and I always supervise the trap while it is set. I am fortunate to be able to do this. I don't leave set traps unattended for the reasons mentioned by Marlyn. When we were under the gun to get a family trapped before a building was demolished, we actually took shifts watching the set traps ps my experience with ferals is they have been terrified and squeezed agst the back of the trap. The only feisty critters I've encountered are raccoons I've trapped (and released). This is another reason I stopped setting traps at night! Everyone I have ever seen has left them in the trap overnight - in fact you are required to bring them to the low cost spay neuter clinic in traps, so I have no advice on this. They do get trap savvy very easily and you can't keep re-trapping them, often you only get one shot at it. Well I figured out a system if I do trap her. I can take her to all night vet for testing and they'll put her into a big dog kennel like they did the kitten last night. Its costly but its worth my peace of mind at this point. She's out there right now and I know she's hungry but she's spooked by the trap. I had the trap set from early this AM but she's used to being fed by my father this time of night and sure enough, she was by the apt when we came back from dinner! I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I also put a sheet of newspaper inside at the entrance w. some treats to sort of lure them in. I saw Mom today but she didn't go to eat. I'm hoping they come back. Does anyone have advice? Is there any 'trick' to transferring from trap to large dog kennel? If for example, I trapped one tonight, I'd have to keep her overnight before I could go anywhere and I don't want to leave the cat in the trap all night with no food, water or litter box.. Trap with water and canned food in the trap. They will be fine overnight. Cover with a towel and place the trap in a quiet, dark, safe INSIDE place until you can get to vet. Most important thing is to keep them safe until they can get to vet. Trying to transfer is not safe. I always took the trapped cat directly to the vet in the trap (covered and placed in plastic in my vehicle). I always trapped in the AM so I could get them right to the vet. That's better, if you can do that, depending on your schedule and theirs. I set 2 traps at once and that sped things up.
