SEVERAL LITTERS SAY THEY ARE FLUSHABLE, BUT I HAVE A SEPTIC TANK AND i AM A BIT
LEERY ABOUT THAT. mY SOLUTION IS A COMPOST PILE FOR JUST SOILED LITTER. tHERE
IS NO ODOR AND IT BREAKS DOWN. AFTER IT BREAKS DOWN, I USE IT ON ORNAMENTAL
FLOWER BEDS AS COMPOST. iF YOU ARE IN AN AREA WHERE THEY WILL LET YOU DO
THAT,YOU COULD DO THAT WITH YOUR CHICKEN FEED LITTER. BEATS CARRYING IT TO THE
CURB.
HOW MANY CATS DO YOU HAVE? I AM DOWN TO 5, BUT EVEN WITH 7, I FOUND THAT IF I
TOOK OUT THE CLUMPS, A BAG LASTS A LONG TIME. i HAVE 4 BAGS AND I THINK THAT
WILL LASTS ME FOR THE 3 MONTHS OF WINTER.

Yes, I scoop his litter box twice a day. The Respiratory Relief is the
best litter I have tried so far, as far as dustiness goes, and I've tried
most of them. I will be sticking with it for the time being if he
continues to do well with it.

tINA, DO YOU SCOOP THE LITTER EACH DAY? i DO WITH WORLD'S BEST AND IT LAST A
LONG TIME,SO YOU SAVE MONEY EVEN THO IT IS EXPENSIVE.
I DON'T LIKE THOSE SELF CLEANING PANS. i AM AFRAID THAT THE NOISE THEY MAKE
WILL TURN THE CATS OFF. PLUS, I WOULD NEED 6 BOXES. IT ONLY TAKES ABOUT 10 -
15 MINUTES MORNING AND NIGHT TO SCOOP AND THAT IS 6 LITTER BOXES WITH 5 CATS.
THAT IS ALSO WHY I LIKE MY WORLD'S BEST, ONCE THE URINE OR STOOL IS COVERED, NO
SMELL, EXCEPT FOR HARLEY, HIS IS ESPECIALLY FRAGRANT SO HIS SISTER DEE FOLLOWS
HIM TO THE BOX AND COVERS FOR HIM SINCE HE DOES NOT FEEL COVERING IS NECESSARY.

2013-11-14 Thread Tina Smith
Thank you all for the replies! After doing lots and lots of reading I
decided to try Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Respiratory Relief and, so far, I
am really pleased with it. Even when I dumped the bag in the litter pan (I
used a large cement mixing pan and it's great!) there was NO dust. Just
now he was in there digging like a fiend and there was no dust then either.
 It's expensive but he's worth it : ) I am also thinking about a
CatGenie.
It would be an expensive experiment though if he wouldn't use it.

When we went to the vet we had a very new veterinarian see us that day. I
was concerned that he didn't want to do any testing. I expected they would
at least suggest an x-ray or something. This vet's office has a great
reputation in our area but that's mostly because of the original vet, who
doesn't see as many patients these days. Darwin is doing quite a bit
better now but I may make an appointment with this vet specifically if I
don't see more improvement soon. I have been giving him Homeopet Nose
Relief as well. I don't know if it's what is helping him or not but I
figure it can't hurt. Except that he hates it. I can't smell it or taste
it but apparently he can!

Thanks again for all the help. I've been lurking here for a while, hoping
I wouldn't need any advice, but it was so nice to know I had you all to
come to if I did.

2013-11-13 Thread Jennifer Lewis
I love World's Best, but can't afford it right now. I'd rather spend $$ on good
food and care.

For my FELV's I am using unmedicated Laying Hen crumble. Yes, chicken feed.
Available at any feed store, and these days urban chickens are tres chic so
it's easy to find.
I got it because one of my girls was only 2 months and we were scared she'd eat
clay, and we've stuck with it. It's very similar to WB (It's corn), clumps,
LIGHT, and 50 lbs is around $16 (and that's in LA). Low dust.
OH, and did I mention it is FLUSHABLE?

I wish all the other kids would use it, but my diabetic won't so she will pee
everywhere, so only the girls get it. That clay s**t is heavy and dusty.

Jen, Brynn and Munch

PS. Brynn has a kitty cold :(

Have you had a check-up on his heart. Sometimes coughing is due to mild cardiac

always use free/clear because I don't like to breathe chemicals along with my

sort of fumes to the air might be a problem for any cat, not only FeLv+. Cough
can also be due to spasm in throat. Maybe he eats too fast or too much at a

certain foods, like bread or potatoes.

I also tried Sweet Scoop. It is not only dusty, but when not scooped soon
enough, gets moldy.
I am and have been for several years using World's Best litter. It is a little
bit dusty, but other than Blue Diamond's Walnut hull litter they are all dusty
to some extent. I also like the Blue Buffalo, but it is heavier than Worlds
Best. I have 6 cats now, 1 is felv and they all love World's Best and Blue
Buffalo.

May also want to consider pneumonia as a cause for coughing. Xray can determine

They make sifting litter boxes just for the pine litter. you just sift it to
the bottom. And, yes, go to the feed store & get the equine once you have
determined your cats will actually use it.

Re: [Felvtalk] Best litter for FeLV?

2013-11-10 Thread Shelley Theye
Hi Tina,

In addition to checking for asthma, you should make sure that Darwin doesn't
have a heart problem.
I guess vet should really do a more thorough work up or try a diff. vet?
If she said it was pleural effusion, shouldn't she being doing a further
workup??
Chest x-rays? at least do his heart and lungs sound OK?
If coughing from heart problem, you would want to get that addressed pretty
quickly.
Steroids should not be used in cats with heart problems, so vet would need to
rule that out.
Does he seem to be breathing normally, without effort, watching his sides at
rest?

Maybe the foreign object idea should be looked into more, hairball, etc.
Also, I guess FIP since it causes fluid and maybe coughing?

Litter- I guess I'm in the minority, I like Swheatscoop and the Blue Buffalo
Walnut litter.
I used the walnut litter before blue buffalo bought that company, and I find
now that it doesn't
clump very well, so I tried their multi-cat formula and it works a lot better,
still same simple ground
walnuts, but the grind is diff. and it clumps better.
I found the Worlds Best cat litter (corn) to be terribly dusty, worse than
anything else.
I can't stand the strong smell of the pine.
No lid on box would be best, so he isn't standing in a contained cloud of dust.

I had a previous cat that began coughing all of a sudden, and it turned out
that he had a lot of
fluid in his chest that the vet gave him lasix for. She thought FIP which
thank goodness if wasn't,
so we never found out what caused the fluid. I guessed that it might have been
related to a dose of
ivermectin he received for ear mites, because this happened a few weeks
afterwards. I wondered
if he had a heart worm that was killed by the ivermectin, and that it broke
apart and caused the fluid??
Anyway, that was a long time ago, was a mystery, and he lived many more years...

Hope it is something easy to fix and that he feels better soon,
Shelley

But save yourself some serious money, and buy equine pine pellet bedding, Much cheaper. I use whatever clumping litter is cheap. I use mortar mixing tubs as litter boxes, and add additional litter about once a week.

Antibiotics are a double edged sword. Since researching convenia, I no longer allow it's use without my express consent, and it won't be easy to convince me. I'm not sure why you believe the URI is not bacterial, I'm interested in knowing how to tell the difference without actual culture and testing. In my experience, oral Abx can be helpful, even with a viral URI. It can prevent a secondary bacterial infection from taking hold. I've got Pixel on both an anti-viral and and anti-biotic right now, for the URI that has resurfaced with the recent steroid use. And sadly, nothing is helping. It's a balancing act, at best. I'm unsure of the term homeo/allopathic, could you explain? Seems contradictory, but I'm interested in the understanding the combination. While I've had little success with Homeopathy, I do use Holistic remedies, along with conventional allopathic treatment. TCM and acupuncture helped some things, as well. But, my Holistic Vet is in another state, and I've yet to find a local Homeopath.
It is important to have a Vet who will work with you and explain, and is also open to learning...

I highly recommend a chest x-ray. If you have a vet that does digital
radiography, that would be even better, as it should have a higher resolution
than the old-style film x-rays, and the vet can store it digitally and easily
compare to future scans, should your kitty need them.

2013-11-10 Thread Lee Evans
I'm not very enthusiastic about clumping litter. If you use it properly, you
have to use the whole darn bag to get it to clump properly and not turn into a
cement block because you did not use enough. If you use the whole bag, it's
very expensive because when you scoop the clumps, the litter MUST be replaced,
again to get it to clump properly and not glue itself to the litter box. If you
replace it you spend more money. If you use the generic store brand, you get 40
pound clumps that eventually bond together and need to be disposed of in an
industrial waste dump. LOL. Not everything that is advertised is really as
magical as it seems to be.

Feline does not have dust when pouring but it turns into a find yellow powder
after it breaks down. It's nice and inexpensive where I am because I get pine
pellets from a local feed store at $6 for 40#. But it takes a lot of sweeping
up after it's used for a while.

Hi Tina -

SWeat Scoop also harden to a cement-like texture that is horribly difficult to
get out . I had to take a hammer to it.
You might want to try Feline Pine. Some cats don't like the texture, but it
doesn't have the dust. Also World's Best (corn based) or the new Blue Buffalo
(Walnut Based). My cats & I like the BB best.
I also if your litter box is covered, but that can cause asthmatic problems.

Hi all,

I have an FeLV+ kitty.  He has been mostly healthy but is currently going

seems sensitive to the drier air of winter and perhaps has some environmental
allergies.  In addition to other things we are doing I am trying to find a

okay through his nose, although I have noticed occasionally that there does
seem to be a little congestion.  There has been no open-mouth breathing.  He
had a bout of diarrhea for a couple of days this past week but seemed to get
over that.  Now I think he might actually be constipated.  When he coughs
nothing comes out but he does swallow as if he has coughed a little something

Re: [Felvtalk] Best litter for FeLV?

2013-11-10 Thread Michelle B
Did vet do xrays to check for asthma? My cat did the same thing and it was
seasonal asthma and he got better with an oral tapering dose of prednisolone.
NEVER do depo medrol injections for asthma or allergies please...do your own
research on the side effects of depomedr ol in case that comes up. Also, its
not a good idea to give antibiotics to 'blanket', especially in immune
compromised cats. It doesnt sound like your cat has a bacterial URI and if it's
viral the antibiotics wont help. A lot of vets throw antibiotics at cats when
they don't know what else to do and that has its own plethora of issues. I know
you can't do anything about it now but for future reference. I had to learn the
hard way to question my vet and do my own homework. I also opt for
homeo/allopathic treatments as much as possible and I notice a huge difference
with my animals.

[Felvtalk] Best litter for FeLV?

2013-11-10 Thread Tina Smith
Hi all,

he seems sensitive to the drier air of winter and perhaps has some
environmental allergies. In addition to other things we are doing I am
trying to find a dust-free cat litter for him. Last night I spent a small
fortune on SWheatScoop litter and was appalled to see all of the dust that
went flying when we put it in his litter pan. So much for dust-free. Has
anyone here had luck finding a litter that is good to use for our FeLV+
sweeties?

I'll also tell you a little more about what he's going through in case
anybody has some insight into what might be causing it. The vet wasn't
helpful. Just gave him a Convenia antibiotic injection but couldn't say
what the problem might be except possibly pleural effusion. Darwin is
coughing a lot - a little like the "hairball cough" but not exactly. He
seems to be breathing mostly okay through his nose, although I have noticed
occasionally that there does seem to be a little congestion. There has
been no open-mouth breathing. He had a bout of diarrhea for a couple of
days this past week but seemed to get over that. Now I think he might
actually be constipated. When he coughs nothing comes out but he does
swallow as if he has coughed a little something up and then swallows it. I
have almost wondered if he might have an obstruction but it does seem to be
affecting his breathing some. I haven't been able to pinpoint any
triggers. He has coughed after drinking water, he has coughed when the

Any insight would be so welcome.
