Re: [Felvtalk] Supplementing the diet of a + cat in a multicat house-
Can you give him snacks in between feeding...perhaps when you are having alone time with him? Id suggest tidbits like crockpot chicken (a favorite of Copper and Thomas) or perhaps some hamburger. They have to have animal fat. We've been giving him DMG liquid on his food- don't know if it's helping, but it sure isn't hurting! My biggest concern right now is his weight- I think he's actually lost a bit more, and he is borderline emaciated at this point. He doesn't need to be fat, but I've got to get some meat back on him. We've been feeding all three wellness dry daily, with canned on top about 3x a week. Would switching to canned exclusively put weight on him? How about switching to core dry? I'm not sure how to get weight on him without pumping up my other two like stay-puft marshmallow kitties- they're already a bit on the rotund side, and we don't really have a way to separate them for feeding. They tend to leave each other's bowls alone so long as everyone gets basically the same thing. Any ideas? My cats tend to be fattest on dry food. They are thinner, more playful and energetic on wet, and it is supposed to be a lot healthier for them (less chance of diabetes, etc.), although it is painfully expensive for 5 cats. Mine have severe allergy problems so I have to feed them Natural Balance Venison Green Pea. I think special snackies are a great idea... Canned has fewer calories than dry. A cup of dry can range from over 400 to over 600 kcals. I was feeding dry EVO and I think it's something like 650 kcals per cup. Wellness dry (yellow bag) was around 450 kcals per cup. A 3 oz can, of Petguard turkey and barley lite, for example is 88 kcals. Weruva paw lickin chicken, 3 oz can, is 44 kcals. You can find kcal info on the manufacturer website or contact the company. Hi Amy, I was having the same problem with my Fred, he is CRF. He was steadily losing weight and I finally resorted to feeding him baby food. I try and get him to eat minimum 3 jars of Gerber 2nd food Heinz chicken, he likes the Gerber better, creamier and has double the calories, 4 jars is better yet. He was down to 8lbs. 4oz. and in a few months I've got him back up to 8lbs. 15oz., doesn't seem like much but for a furkid with CRF that's pretty good. He has had CRF for over 3 years now. Since this is his main diet I add some taurine and a pinch of a muti-vitamin to the first meal to make sure he is getting what he needs, taurine is very important for cats. Maybe you could try that and take Grrr into the bathroom to feed him his secial food and make it a special bonding time for the two of you, most cats love baby food so it shouldn't take very long for him to eat it. Then you could just leave the other food out and if he eats some of that ... it's a bonus!! -- Belinda happiness is being owned by cats ... http://bemikitties.com http://BelindaSauro.com ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org
