Re: housing/fostering of FeLV+ cats
It's taking me forever to catch up on my email, and I feel very bad about that. I've been looking at mail for mid-July and I'm really REALLY sorry to see the lambasting that Karolyn got from Jenn after Jenn misread Karolyn's email. Karolyn said: .If you can get the cat to me I will take it sight unseen ie Karolyn quite clearly said cat singular. There was no ambiguity. From everything I have read from Karolyn and Jenn they are both good people. This is a general plea to a) please read email correctly before hitting the keyboard and b) think before you respond. I thought hard for all of 20 seconds before writing this, but I really do feel i have to stand up and defend Karolyn here, who did not deserve this and was commendably restrained in her response. I know some will say it's over and done with, and Jenn apologized, and I shouldn't drag this up now, but that's the trouble with the written word--it's there forever, and it shocked me right here tonight. Sorry, I hate to be a sarcastic sounding bitch, but your offer rings of insincerity and/or an unrealistic offer. Can you provide two veterinary references, plus three personal references not related to you? Are you a member of, or have you worked with any rescue groups? If so, can we have their contact info? Do you have pictures of your property and current cats? How large is your cat house? Are all cats kept indoors only, or contained in some kind of cat proof fencing? Do you cage cats, or let them roam freely in the house? How far do you pursue treatment for these cats, do you use any of the treatments listed on our website? At what point do you consider it time to let a cat go, and humanely euthanise him/her? Do you have a staff, or do you take care of all the litterboxes, feeding, medical care, vet visits, grooming, and socializing yourself? Maybe you are a kind person who just does not realize the scope of the problem outside your own little area. With an offer like you just made, you would be overrun with hundreds of cats within days to weeks. All of us here try to take in what we can, when we can. There is only a limited number of cats any one person can manage at one time. I was one of the Founders of Island Cat Rescue, 11 yrs. ago. At the present time I am a member of 2nd Chance Cat Rescue. All the cats are kept indoors except for the patio that has Fence In around the top of it. I have been taking in Felv+ cats for 13yrs. I have been a client of Dr.Wong of Blue Cross Pet Hosp., in San Francisco for 22yrs. At times I have used Alameda Pet Hosp, Providence Hosp, both in Alameda. and I have used Broadway Pet Hosp. in Oakland since they are open on Sundays. In addition I have taken several cats to Univ. of Calif., at Davis Vet. College. All cats get the very best of medical care until the FeLV takes over, then they are helped over the Rainbow Bridge. When I said I would take a cat unseen I have done this for yrs. Some one would call me about a FeLV+ cat that needed a home. I didn't care if it was young/old, cute/ugly shy, etc. It was a FeLV cat that need a home. If I had room I would say yes. I would even get calls from well known rescue groups. I will only take one at a time as it is only fair to the cats that I now have and the new cat. RE: housing/fostering of FeLV+ cats
Hi, When I was working I kept the number down to 18. am now down to four (4). Now that I am retired, wheelchair bound, my max is six (6). Thank you for the Pat on the Back. The good news is when I had one of my cats at the vet today he told me that very few FeLV+ cats show up anymore. And their clinic will NOT put down a FeLV+ cat that is not sick. One reason for this might be that people with Indoor Only cats are getting the vaccine against it, It would be great if this downturn were to spread coast to coast.

Re: housing/fostering of FeLV+ cats
Ouch, Jenn. Kathryn doesn't take EVERY but she has been in this group a long time and from her posts, she has sounded like a very caring cat mom who has cared for many kitties, including positives for years. She has given goodadvise for us. And, if I remember correctly, she has decreased her group as she has become older - we have to do that, you know. I greatly admire her commitment to the kitties, again if my memory serves me correctly, she is somewhat disabled.
