Every time the crash happens, I have to trash the pref and unzip the backup pref file. It is my routine now. I have had this problem for so long (2007 and 2008) that I have developed my own defensive routine. I keep a duplicate or two of my preference files - Finale 2008 Preferences copy - in the same place that Finale keeps the file (User/Library/Preferences). When Finale crashes, I trash the corrupted file and rename one of the copies. (For some reason, this cannot be done by removing the word copy; the whole name must be retyped.) Then I duplicate the new Preferences file, before opening Finale, to be sure I will have an uncorrupted copy when I need it. That this cumbersome routine continues through 2 versions does not speak well for the way Finale works with ppc Macs. Is the problem cured for the Intel Macs? By the way, a while ago I tried to help a few people who are having FinMac crash on startup at HAL level on MIDI driver. Later I learned this is caused by using Migration assistant. If you used it to copy over AMS file from your old system, Finale doesn't like it. What's an AMS file? I noticed I had to trash my Finale preferences after I switched computers using Migration Assistant, but everything else was fine. AMS = Audio MIDI Setup You will find the config files in ~/Library/Audio/MIDI Configurations. In my vague memory, the problem hit you only when you migrate from PPC to Intel. I never use the assistant so I haven't seen this crash, but the sign is that the crash.log shows MIDI crash at the hardware layer (HAL). Hmm, when I migrated from my G4 to my Intel Mac, I only had to move the authorisation and trash preferences. But I guess that's the joy of using Finale; one never knows what kind of problem you are going to have that is specific to you and only you! 8-)=) [big toothy grin] Right now I am having trouble getting files from 2007 to playback in 2008. When I was futzing with this back in September 07, (Hiro helped alot) I went so far as to wipe the disk, and install from scratch. F2008 would start until I installed another app (digital performer) which routed audio through my PCI card. Further, I found that if I removed MOTUPCIAudio.kext from my system extension folder, Finale would run. If I ran installers to put it back (moving copies didn't work for some reason) then Finale would crash on start. Hiro went so far as to test on a system he had using a PCI card but could not replicate. I got tired of the guessing game at that point and went back to F2007. [Finale] Times listed as symbol font
Hello all, I've been getting files from a composer using Finale 2008, and whenever I open them I get the message: This file was created on a computer whose MacSymbolFonts.txt file designated Times as a Symbol font. Would you like to make this change on your computer? If not, the font will be marked as a Text font in this document. Of course, I always click No because why on earth would I want Times to be a symbol font and not a text font? I've suggested to the composer that he edit his MacSymbolFonts.txt file to remove Times from the list, but he says he already tried that and when he did, all of his old documents put up the warning like it does on my system when opened. Is there some quick and easy way to globally change a bunch of old documents so they won't think Times is supposed to be a symbol font? [Finale] WinFin 2008a Rests in Voice 2
After various pastes between staves, I am findind rests appearing in bars where the Voice 2 has never been used. These artifacts can be painstakingly removed, but they are seemingly something peculiar to 2008. I'm sure there's an obscure button I need to uncheck. I remain distrustful of the :filters in the EDIT menu;-( BTW, MAKEMUSIC Support fixed the crashing after pastes by deleting the finale.ini file. I remain distrustful of the :filters in the EDIT menu;-( BTW, MAKEMUSIC Support fixed the crashing after pastes by deleting the finale.ini file. I can't explain the rests, unless you unintentionally copied a bit of Layer 2 from an adjacent measure, which is easy enough to do now that there is no more Select Partial Measure to turn off (were you talking about Voice 2 or Layer 2? Sometimes I get confused, too.) When selecting parts of a passage, I am careful to click IN the beginning bar to select the whole bar, then click or shift-click a second time where I want the selection to end. At least it STARTS at the beginning of the measure correctly then. But don't be afraid of the filters. They are great. I use them extensively and the only problems I have had are: 1) when copying Measure Attributes they will copy the double barlines alright, but NOT the toggle that says Break A Multimeasure Rest, nor other attributes other than the barline itself. This causes unbroken rests, missing expressions, etc. Now that I know, I work around it, but still... 2) When copying Staff Styles between staves, sometimes the style will not show up in the linked part until I select All with the Staff Tool and choose Reset Staff Styles to Score while in the part.
