Yes, thanks, done all that - I've changed every default file I can find but
the wizard still seems to take it from somewhere else - not a clue where.

Cheers.

[Finale] Default file with Wizard

2019-06-21 Thread Lawrence Yates
Hi, can somebody please tell me how to change the default to A4 rather than
Letter on new files created with the wizard. I've tried everything I can
think of and am getting nowhere.

I know how to do it when creating new files without the wizard, it's just
the wizard version that I need to change to A4 default.

Thanks,

Lawrence

Sorry, I neglected to say that I want to change the file that opens with

I've had this problem before when I last had to re-install Finale but I

Re: [Finale] Changing default page layout

2017-09-17 Thread Lawrence Yates
Thanks for your help regarding default files.

It seems that there are two default files - one is in "defaults" - this one
changes the "new file" default.

The other is under "document styles" and this is the one I missed - it
changes the defaults when new files are created using the setup wizard.

Thanks again to all who responded.

Thanks Christopher, I'm sure I used to do it in a much easier way than
that. It's to enclose a set of details at the top of the first page
including several text inserts (date, modification, duration etc.) I'm
sure that in the past I simply used to draw a rectangle around everything,
although maybe I dreamt that.

Thanks.

[Finale] Finale 25 Octaves

2017-04-10 Thread Lawrence Yates
Hi,

I've just bought Finale 25 Windows.

I've had a couple of passages somehow being transposed up an octave without
any input from me. Fortunately I've spotted them so far but this could be
disastrous should I miss them.

Is this a known fault or am I doing something stupid? (Never had this
problem in any other version of Finale). The current problem was in a
bassoon part which I entered correctly. When I changed to look at the
score in scroll view it was transposed up the octave.

Cheers,

Lawrence

Of course, from at least Finale 2012 there's a plugin under Plugins -

Re: [Finale] finale 25

2017-03-14 Thread Lawrence Yates
I've now completely reinstalled Finale and everything seems to be working
now BUT - on playback some of the instruments (descant recorder for
example) seem unaffected by the volume controls in the mixer. This makes a
bit of a mess of any playback files using these instruments. Has anyone
else found this and found a solution please?

Lawrence.

2015-09-24 Thread Lawrence Yates
Hi,
I've just bought a lead to attach my piano keyboard to my computer and am
attempting to use hyperscribe.

Are there optimum settings to make this work efficiently? The quantisation
settings seem to result in either missing notes if set to larger levels or
unusable results if set to smaller. (I'm sure I don't play so badly out of
time!)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Lawrence

Re: [Finale] Hide ties

2015-06-27 Thread Lawrence Yates
I imply no criticism, but just out of interest, why would you want to hide
a tie?

Cheers,

Lawrence

What's the easiest way to hide a tie? (Other than duplicating the
notation without ties in another layer and hiding the playback layer, which
is what I normally have to resort to.)

equivalent of the 2000 optimise which would hide all the empty staves in
however many systems of a score I chose, with one command. Have I missed a
renamed equivalent in 2014? I tried the Index on optimise and hide.

I've just been looking at a lot of complicated stuff about Group
Attributes, but I haven't been using groups and don't feel the need for
most of the scores I'm creating. Quite often I'm transcribing music
originally written for voices, or perhaps for piano, and simply have
numbered parts which get allocated to whichever instrument(s) / player(s)
from my current bizarre line-up happen to fit best (adult learners, no
minimum standard and few limits on numbers of a particular instrument).

 The present 38 players are:
6 flutes (1 double pic and also, another bass flute), 3 oboes (1 doubling
 cor A.), 7 clarinets (1 doubling A T saxes, another Bass Cl.), 3 more A
 Saxes (1 doubling T), 1 bassoon, 1 French horn, 1 tenor trombone, 8
violins, 4 violas, 4 cellos. The most elementary is probably in her 50s,
started learning violin last September as her first ever instrument, with
 no previous musical experience.

Re: [Finale] Finale/Sibelius

2015-05-27 Thread Lawrence Yates
No, it doesn't affect your Finale at all. I did the cross grade to try out
Sibelius, didn't like it and have continued to use Finale, using Sibelius
only when I have to, for example, when students give me work in Sib.

On 27 May 2015 at 16:38, Neal Gittleman nealg...@mac.com wrote:

A query for any of you who have done the Finale-to-Sibelius cross-grade.
On the Sibelius site they characterize it as “switch to Sibelius…” but I
assume that doing this cross-grade doesn’t at all affect your ability to
continue to use Finale in addition to Sibelius, right

A stupid question, I’m sure, but some stupid questions are worth asking,
like “There IS water in this pool, isn’t there?”

[Finale] Changing transposition mid piece

2015-04-06 Thread Lawrence Yates
Hi,

In WinFin 2012 how do I change the horn's transposition mid-piece, for
example 8 bars horn in F, 4 bars horn in D etc.

I used to do this in earlier versions of finale but I can't remember how I
did it (I thought it was with staff styles but this seems not to be the way
any more).

I can't find any reference to mid-piece changes in the manual

Thanks.

[Finale] Folders

2014-11-30 Thread Lawrence Yates
I'm using Finale 2012 on Windows 8

I'm not sure if this is a Windows problem or Finale:

Let's say my file structure is Finale Pieces Horn Quartet Christmas
(I've actually shortened this list here).

If I open a file from the Christmas folder then try to open another file,
the open list goes back to Finale so every time I want to open another
file from the Christmas folder I have to go through the rigmarole of
going through the whole sequence.

It was not like this on my previous computer (Windows XP) - there the
open list went to the last folder I'd opened, which is what I want it to
do.

Is there anything I can do to get the old behaviour back?

Thanks,

purchased Sibelius, done the bulk of the work in Finale because that is
their native program and then exported over to Sibelius via .xml and just
cleaned it up and engraved the missing/mistaken details in Sibelius? Is
that a crackpot idea? As far as I know, .xml is the only option between the

Re: [Finale] OT: Baroque Articulation

2014-09-25 Thread Lawrence Yates
There was a recent conversation in one of the mailing lists of which I am a
member (possibly this one) where it was stated that these daggers have
nothing to do with the length of the note but that they indicate that the
notes should be given equal weight (as opposed to a strong first beat) and
that this indication continued beyond the baroque into the early romantic
period.

Can anyone offer anything to support or refute this?

[Finale] Notes scrunching together

Hi,

I'm currently transcribing a piece which includes lots of
semiquavers/demi-semiquavers (don't know what that is in American).

Using speedy entry, as I type in the notes they all scrunch together so

Is there any way I can stop this happening as I type as opposed to hitting
update layout at the end of every bar (which doesn't solve the problem of
individual bars being illegible as I type anyway).

[Finale] OT Files missing from list

2014-04-30 Thread Lawrence Yates
In case anyone else has the same problem:

The missing files problem is now sorted and, as I feared, was a Windows
problem not Finale and was something to do with permissions.

I tried to copy a non-Finale file to the folder I use for Finale files and
received an error message to say that I did not have permission to post to
that folder.

I went into the folder properties and found that it was read only and
despite changing this several times, each time it reverted to read only
when I re-opened it. I then went into the security tab and changed
settings there.

The missing files did not reappear immediately but do appear when I open
them from within Finale and then save them.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help me with this.

Lawrence

Re: [Finale] Files missing from list

2014-04-29 Thread Lawrence Yates
Thanks David,

Been there, done that etc. I've also tried creating a new folder and
adding files to that - all of them are visible in Finale and can be opened,
none of them are visible in WE.

I've tried changing the options in WE and that makes no difference.

I'm really at a loss to find an explanation.

Although I can open the files from within Finale, the problem came to light
when I needed to move some recent files to a USB stick in order to work on
them on my laptop. I finished up having to open Finale, open the files,
Save As etc etc which took about twenty times as long as simply dragging
them in WE.

I'd be grateful for anything to try!

Cheers,

Lawrence

Are you keeping Windows Explorer open all the time or re-starting it
 occasionally?

If you are keeping Windows Explorer open all the time, it doesn't
refresh what files it is showing automatically -- you need to hit F5 to
get it to reread the files and folders it's displaying.

If you have exited Windows Explorer and then restarted Windows Explorer
and you still can't see the files, I've got no explanation.

Hi Noel,

Thanks - just tried your suggestion - the file is not marked hidden. I
also earlier tried checking the show hidden files box in WE but that
didn't work either. I suspect that it's a Windows problem rather than
Finale.

I'd hoped that someone on here might have had the same problem and that it

Ah well,

Thanks anyway,

My best guess, based upon what I remember from a similar issue some
years, and a couple OS versions ago, is that you may have somehow gotten
the hidden file attribute set on those files. The way I managed this
was that I somehow got the hidden attribute set on the file I used as
a template, and the attribute stayed set when I saved daughter files.

Hear hear, Steve.

Yes it's easy to google and easy to find thousands of links but there's a
good chance that a fair proportion of them will be useless for whatever
reason. Asking on a mailing list such as this may help to narrow it down a
little and comments by those who have actually used some of these sites are
more valuable than the tiny extracts offered in a google result.

How I wish there had been a group like this when I was studying early
notation in the days before the internet - it might have saved me the many
hours I spent in libraries ploughing through obscure articles which often
led nowhere.

Incidentally, on one of those library visits I was accosted by a chap who
invited me to look for articles via some kind of computer link he had set
up. He was a salesman selling subscriptions - results would be posted to
you. I didn't realise it at the time but this must have been a very early
version of the internet.

Re: [Finale] Horn question

2014-02-09 Thread Lawrence Yates
There is a movement towards the use key signatures especially if the music
is more modern. Modern shows and modern music tend to use them so I would
suggest that you do that. Wind bands have been using key signatures for
years. In extreme keys especially a key signature will make for much
cleaner parts. As to which I prefer personally, I suppose it depends on
the music. Like most horn players, I'm happy with either.

If, as it seems, this is being done for a specific player it may be worth
asking him what he prefers.

Going slightly off at a tangent from your question, if you are producing a
full set of parts for publication or general use, personally I would like
to see in the set the original un-transposed parts and also a set of horn
in F parts for those who prefer it. If there is any chance that the music
may be played on natural horns then obviously they will prefer original
parts.

Cheers

Re: [Finale] Beating my head against the wall on repeats

2014-01-31 Thread Lawrence Yates
Is the failure of the repeat text to appear in the part not the same
problem I had the other week? Go into the Staff tool, double click on the
staff and in the resulting dialogue box check endings and text repeats

Cheers,

Lawrence

Have you set a staff list for it? I get handles for the markings that only
show in parts and can adjust position independently in the score if Allow

Not in my case, I don't think. I have this To coda mark assigned to
the top staves only. This is the default and a good one. I hate seeing
scores where signs and other sequence markings are repeated on every
staff. That looks really unpolished to my eyes. So I wholeheartedly
approve of the Finale default. However, that means there is no to
coda mark visible on the tenor sax part in the score in my instance. I
have to go into the part to see that, and Finale won't let me move the
To coda in the part if it is within the mm rest.

  That's the catch-22.

Re: [Finale] Anybody having any success with scanning?

2014-01-22 Thread Lawrence Yates
I gave up with scanning music - there were so many mistakes that it was
easier and quicker to re-type the entire document than scan, check and
correct.

Sorry,

Lawrence

I used a variety of scan formats and they all produced identical
results. One was a 600 BPI TIFF grey scale.

It is hard to believe that the scanner model would make such a
difference because the image at 600 BPI is extremely crisp on my scanner
(which happens to be a Brother.

I did some tests where I scanned separately and opened the TIFF under
Finale. I did others where I let Finale do the scanning and the results
 were the same.

Here is an example of the problems:
1-4 should be a multimeasure rest. Shows up as one measure with 2 bad
 notes
 5 No slur or dynamic
 6 No slur
 7 No slur or tie
9 No opening repeat. Should be 4-bar multi-measure. Recognized as one
 measure with 2 bad notes.
 13 No slur or tie
 14 missing slur and tie
 16 missing staccato and tie
 17 missing articulations

Every single measure would require some editing, which obviously is not
a good trade-off of time. In the past, I did have somewhat better
success with less jazzy music fonts. However, the things the scanners
are missing are not the notes so much. They are slurs, ties,
expressions, and they aren't that much different in the jazz font.

I'd rather not buy a new scanner, as I have two multi-function units
nearby already, and one of them does up to 11x17. The cheapest Epson
11x17 scanner is over $1500, and I bet it wouldn't do any better than my
 Brother MFC.

After watching Tom Johnson of Finale scan in clinics with relative ease
I have gone back to scanning. He tells us that certain scanners are better
than others for scanning and that a dpi of 500 or better will achieve
optimal results. 300 dpi is pretty awful in scanning music even though we
were all told that long ago it was acceptable. I watched Tom scan in a
random band score at the Midwest clinic in Dec. and it produced every note
that was on the page correctly as seen using the free version of smartscore
lite. Yes there were no text on the scanned page but he also added that
instead of taking the scanned page and turning it into your finished doc
you should copy the info from it and paste into a new doc set up how you
want the final score to look like.
