Re: [Finale] What is the Finale strategy?

2018-04-21 Thread Ryszard Pusz
I have followed this thread with interest. I continue to use Finale because I
am too lazy to learn any other, but I use it quite detachedly. As a
percussionist I would like to be able to notate a much greater range of nuances
than the program allows, and then to have the sounds played back.

I don't know why the untuned percussion sounds are locked into such a rigid
system. Surely it would be possible to have each untuned instrument notated
anywhere on the staff, say in a "two-octave" range and have those sounds tied
to the neutral clef. Secondly, the strokes used to play them could also be more
flexibly notated and played back

But probably NIML (not in my lifetime)…

Re: [Finale] Staff question

2017-08-23 Thread Ryszard Pusz
Hi Patsy,

If I'm understanding your post correctly, it seems to me that the easiest
option is to copy a bar (or few) into a word document, which can be done as
often as you want.

On a mac I would open finale and create a system of however many lines, bars
and clefs I wanted within the margins I want.

Then open Preview, click command-3 drag the cross-hair to capture those bars
and copy-paste them into the word document of the questionnaire.

If you are using windows I guess there is a similar way of doing this too.

cheers,

Rolled cymbal on timpani can work, especially if the timp is glissed.

What about bending notes on marimba or xylophone? The sounds can only be short

Brushed or shaken finger cymbal tree?

And of course don't forget that delightful kid's toy - the twirling pipes and

Re: [Finale] incorporating percussion noteheads

2017-01-12 Thread Ryszard Pusz
I also don't use the playback as it simply doesn't play most of what I write. I
also usually star with normal noteheads. I will check the use of different
fonts, and look forward to checking out yours.

I didn't want to use 2 staffs (hiding the empty ones wouldn't work). Hence my
dilemma, for 10 measures.

Re: [Finale] incorporating percussion noteheads

2017-01-12 Thread Ryszard Pusz
Thanks Jef

But if I if I understood you correctly, that gives me the opposite of what I
want.

By turning off the percussion settings in Score Manager that just gives the
range of usual noteheads & no circle with an "x" within it.

As a percussionist I have long held that there is no need for alternate
noteheads. However, this is a percussion quartet with continual changes between
a variety of tuned and untuned instruments. So to make it clear to the players
I am using different noteheads (squares for templeblocks, triangles for
triangles etc).

I don't know why Finale can't just have all noteheads shown in the special
tools.

I also don't know why the notations of percussion instruments are scored so
inflexibly.

[Finale] incorporating percussion noteheads

2017-01-11 Thread Ryszard Pusz

I am running Finale 214 on MacOS 10.7.5. Is there any way I can get percussion
noteheads onto "normal" notes?

I am writing a percussion part that moves between tuned and untuned instruments
and want to use, for example, a whole note with an 'x' in it.

It seems the Special Tools are specific to either percussion or non-percussion
and I can't copy from one document to another using Mass Mover.

Hopefully the issue is surmountable as it would help me enormously.

Thanks.

Re: [Finale] percussion map question

Hi Sheree,

As an addendum, is it worth trying the following?

Use 1 stave for the sounds of the percussion instruments and another for their
position within the staff where you want them to appear? Then you could delete
& reposition the score. Just a thought.

Re: [Finale] percussion map question

2017-01-09 Thread Ryszard Pusz
Hi Sheree,

As a percussionist I am constantly frustrated by the inability to hear the
percussion sounds in the places where I want them to appear in the score. I
believe it should be possible to set up a range of percussion registers across
all percussion instruments, as it is to set up a range of pitches. So 4 snare
drums should have 4 different sounds when played on the head in the normal
playing position, 4 more when played at the edge another 4 when played in the
middle a further range when using soft mallets, fingers, playing on the rim…

The company that achieves this will get my vote.

Hope you can get an answer to your problem.

Re: [Finale] 3/2 vs. 6/4

2016-12-08 Thread Ryszard Pusz
An interesting point, which shows more than anything else how imprecise music
notation is in conveying a composer's intentions.

Accents could be interpreted with too strong an emphasis on the 1, 3 and 5,
phrase marks could lead to a greater than wanted disconnect between 2-3, 4-5,
6-1. Using 2/4 could overcome these difficulties, maybe.

Or we accept that any language opens itself to a very broad band of
understanding and interpretation.

[Finale] staff names

2016-10-11 Thread Ryszard Pusz
Hi,

I am running Finale 2014 on Mac 10.7.5. How can I change the staff names from
the default? I often combine a few different percussion instruments in a single
stave and usually in positions that are different from their position in
Finale. As a result I need a new name, even if it is only a number.

cheers,
