Thank you Klaus! That did it.

Your example helped illustrate the problem. In this case you need to break
the beam befor the 32nd notes. Use the beam extention tool on both extending
the
stubs AND extend the 8th beam backwards to connect the 32nd note group to the
16ths.

OK, I got a chance finally to look at this again this morning,
applying the info I got here. Thanks for everyone's input. But
there are still issues.
For example, this is the original layout of a measure in question:

And I always thought the Bean Extension tool was for extending your

I know. But if you can get it to extend an internal 16th beam stub,
let me know how. You can ONLY extend the beginning and end of a beam
set. Try this: notate 8th note, 16th rest, 16th note, and try to
extend the secondary beam from the last 16th note over the rest.
Can't be done.

And how far back does the beaming tool have this feature. Was it there in
2003?

The global settings will give you the stubs. You only need to adjust the
places where you want the 16th beams over the rests.

Not so. When you dbl click the handle, select 16th NOT 8th.

The Bean Extension Tool (under Special Tools) will ONLY extend the
end of the beams. Not the internal, secondary beams.

I have a client who is writing a piece that contains quite a bit of
modern notation conventions. In one instance, he has a series of
many 64th notes in one measure, with a few rests in the pattern. He
wants all 4 beams showing over the rests so I can feather the beams.
