Hi,
I am running Finale 2014 on Mac 10.7.5. How can I change the staff names from
the default? I often combine a few different percussion instruments in a single
stave and usually in positions that are different from their position in
Finale. As a result I need a new name, even if it is only a
An interesting point, which shows more than anything else how imprecise music
notation is in conveying a composer's intentions.
Accents could be interpreted with too strong an emphasis on the 1, 3 and 5,
phrase marks could lead to a greater than wanted disconnect between 2-3, 4-5,
6-1. Using 2/

Hi Sheree,
As a percussionist I am constantly frustrated by the inability to hear the
percussion sounds in the places where I want them to appear in the score. I
believe it should be possible to set up a range of percussion registers across
all percussion instruments, as it is to set up a range
Hi Sheree,
As an addendum, is it worth trying the following?
Use 1 stave for the sounds of the percussion instruments and another for their
position within the staff where you want them to appear? Then you could delete
& reposition the score. Just a thought.

I am running Finale 214 on MacOS 10.7.5. Is there any way I can get percussion
noteheads onto "normal" notes?
I am writing a percussion part that moves between tuned and untuned instruments
and want to use, for example, a whole note with an 'x' in it.
It seems the Special Tools are specific
Thanks Jef
But if I if I understood you correctly, that gives me the opposite of what I
want.
By turning off the percussion settings in Score Manager that just gives the
range of usual noteheads & no circle with an "x" within it.
As a percussionist I have long held that there is no need for a
I also don't use the playback as it simply doesn't play most of what I write. I
also usually star with normal noteheads. I will check the use of different
fonts, and look forward to checking out yours.
I didn't want to use 2 staffs (hiding the empty ones wouldn't work). Hence my
dilemma, for 10

Hi Jef,
No suggestion for you, but I am curious. Who makes vibes 1/4 tone lower? Or was
this a special tuning just for that one instrument?

Perhaps my question was misleading. While it is possible to get a tuner to tune
a vibraphone up or down a quarter tone, Jef's statement (it comes that way)
implied to me that the instrument was bought at that tuning and I was wondering
if this was in fact the case.

Rolled cymbal on timpani can work, especially if the timp is glissed.
What about bending notes on marimba or xylophone? The sounds can only be short
but can be quite ghostly.
Brushed or shaken finger cymbal tree?
And of course don't forget that delightful kid's toy - the twirling pipes and

Hmm. Never actually thought to work out the pitches. They have 5 different
tones depending on how fast they are twirled. And they can be blown as well.

And names? Like many percussion instruments they have more than one name -

No name on mine - obviously the cheaper variety that no respectable business
wants to own up to!
I have to admit that I never actually learned a name for them I just bought a
few from a local toy shop about 20 years ago.

Hi Patsy,
If I'm understanding your post correctly, it seems to me that the easiest
option is to copy a bar (or few) into a word document, which can be done as
often as you want.
On a mac I would open finale and create a system of however many lines, bars
and clefs I wanted within the margins
Hi Claudio,
Don't know if this would work. On a Mac when I want to open early word docs I
open Word and then open the particular doc. Maybe this process could also work
with finale. But it is only 1 doc at a time.

Hi Neal,
Not sure of this question was answered but in the Measure tool, look up Measure
in the menu. That should give you the options for score and parts measure
numbers under “Edit Measure Number Regions”.

I have followed this thread with interest. I continue to use Finale because I
am too lazy to learn any other, but I use it quite detachedly. As a
percussionist I would like to be able to notate a much greater range of nuances
than the program allows, and then to have the sounds played back.

Maybe if their bowtie is too tight it acts like a capo?? Then the transposed
notes would match the sounds they make….

Would they accept a Music XML file? they could then open it in Sib.
