Re: [Flashcoders] RANT: Collect Fonts Button

2006-04-13 Thread Daniel Cardenas

So how can QuarkXpress offer such a utility?

Or FlightCheck?

I haven't done any print work in years - and I haven't yet had any
*major* issues with Flash and font management, knock on wood. However I
did pick up some good habits from when I did work in print, and I'm
very impressed with the latest version of Suitcase - "Suitcase
Fusion". It's merged with Font Reserve now, so you can get rid of fonts
throughout your system and let Suitcase manage them in one repository.
And you can collect for output.

Adobe has more than enough expertise with fonts & font management (ATM)
that they should be able to add it to the next generation apps.

I'm with you.

Subject: [Flashcoders] RANT: Collect Fonts Button

Print designers who use QuarkXpress have had an essential utility for
years.
They can collect all the fonts used in a project so that when passing
the source file to a bureau for print the exact same fonts are
supplied

along with the artwork and layout.

I cannot begin to list all the times we have encountered major pain
because the designer who created a particular FLA has lost the fonts
or
reinstalled their operating system or for whatever reason can no
longer
get their hands on the fonts. It is such a phenomenal pain in the
tits.

In terms of production time this is a VERY costly problem. We have
literally wasted hours screwing around with fonts trying to track down
the exact font used in a particular file. Sometimes the font might be
correct version - but different kerning table means it reflows
everywhere. Aggh.

Often made worse by the way that font names are handled differently in
Flash than in other programs using the exact same file. The scope for
confusion is enormous. Even using third party font management tools
like

suitcase does not alleviate the problems because of the way that most
design applications will install their own dirty secret fonts into the
system fonts folder.

Given the number of FLA files that are shared from designer to
developer, agency to client to agency to freelancer etc. I simply
cannot

understand why Macromedia never saw fit to implement a utility like
Quark has so it would be easy to collect all the fonts used in a
particular file for handoff to the next part of the production
workflow.
The chance of font piracy is not a strong enough argument to explain
why
this critical design feature has been left out. After all anyone
wanting
to pirate fonts can just swap the contents of their system fonts
folder

etc.

Clearly, I sincerely hope this is included in the next version of the
Flash IDE - but I'm not holding my breath as it's been a submitted
wishlist item since version 3 or 4! In the meantime it would be great
if
there was a way to handle this with JSFL. Unfortunately I can't see
any

way to access the fonts used property of a document.

I'm sure we are not the only agency nearly driven to dementia with
these

kind of Flash font related issues. If anyone else out there shares our
anguish please speak up, we need to convince Adobe to include proper
font management in the next Flash IDE. And on the offchance that
anyone
has found a funky solution to this most annoying of problems, I will
at

the very least buy you a case of your favorite beer. And if anyone has
any insights to how this could be pulled off with JSFL I would be very
interested to discuss.

OK anyone that made it this far thanks for listening to my ranting.

Maybe we're the only Flash agency lame enough to be so badly affected
by

such font problems coz I don't really see this discussed anywhere, or
maybe there's some really slick or simple solution that everyone else
is

using...but I'm betting not. In which case it seems like an extension
that could fix this would be a *really* shit hot item for someone to
develop and offer to the Flash community as a whole.

RE: [Flashcoders] Retrieving Link Text in a Text Field

Geez that's a shload of class files in that Zip file! [grin] I'm going to
explore XPath a little more when I free up some time.

I really appreciate everyone's willingness to help me out.

Let me outline what I ended up doing. I'm still refining things for
efficiency and re-purposability, but...

1. Tokenize the text field htmlText, creating an array whose elements are
either complete tags, or the extracted content that falls between (or
before or after) them. Obs: There is obviously quite a bit to this that I
left out for brevity.

2. Capture the hyperlink click location in the text field using
Selection.getCaretIndex(). Obs: The "selectable" property of the text
field must already be set to "true" at click time.

3. Cycle through the token array, concatenating non mark-up elements to a
string, whose length is compared (each time) to the caret position.

4. When the string length exceeds/equals the caret position, I have my
hyperlink content.

This presumes a couple of things about the HTML, and there are a few
things I also had to do in order to guarantee the correct text (necessary
to compensate for quirks in the Flash TextField hyperlink mechanism), but
that sums it up.

Thanks again.

[Flashcoders] comboBox overlap issues

2006-04-13 Thread Radley Marx

Hey all,

I'm using a few comboBoxes in my current project. The comboBoxes are
all in child.swf which is loaded into the root.swf.

At first, the drop-downs wouldn't appear when the comboBox bar is
pressed. Once I added a comboBox to the root.swf Library they
appeared to work fine, except now I'm having overlap issues.

In the first case, the top bar is visible. When pressed, the drop-
down menu somehow appears underneath everything else on the child.swf
stage. Would this have anything to do with needing a comboBox in the
root.swf library??

In the 2nd case, I have three combo boxes all together on the stage
with a long comboBox about 150 pixels above the other two. When this
comboBox is selected, the drop menu appears underneath the lower two
comboBoxes, instead of above them.

Solution? What am I missing here??

thnx =)

Wait, you mean you want to pass the text of the link (inside the a tag)
via the function you're calling in the link? You'll have to code that
into the link. If you don't want to do that, there are possible
solutions.

One is to pass the link number in the method and have Flash reference
the htmlText again. What I mean is, if you have 3 tags in your
htmlText, you pass which one it is, like myMethod(2).

Honestly, though, that's probably not what you're looking for, nor is it
very flexible. So, the short answer to your question is no.

contents of their system fonts folder etc.

Clearly, I sincerely hope this is included in the next version of the Flash
IDE - but I'm not holding my breath as it's been a submitted wishlist item
since version 3 or 4! In the meantime it would be great if there was a way
to handle this with JSFL. Unfortunately I can't see any way to access the
fonts used property of a document.

I'm sure we are not the only agency nearly driven to dementia with these
kind of Flash font related issues. If anyone else out there shares our
anguish please speak up, we need to convince Adobe to include proper font
management in the next Flash IDE. And on the offchance that anyone has found
a funky solution to this most annoying of problems, I will at the very least
buy you a case of your favorite beer. And if anyone has any insights to how
this could be pulled off with JSFL I would be very interested to discuss.

OK anyone that made it this far thanks for listening to my ranting.

Maybe we're the only Flash agency lame enough to be so badly affected by
such font problems coz I don't really see this discussed anywhere, or maybe
there's some really slick or simple solution that everyone else is
using...but I'm betting not. In which case it seems like an extension that
could fix this would be a *really* shit hot item for someone to develop and
offer to the Flash community as a whole.

Not me. ;-)

As for the Flash authoring team, I haven't seen any announcements from
them. Lots of tools produce HTML markup for displaying SWF. The Flex 1.5
hotfix is the only one I've seen word on for handling this new browser
behavior:

http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/activecontent/

I think it would be possible for anyone to create their own HTML
template which references an external JavaScript file, but I haven't
proofed that idea this afternoon.

RE: [Flashcoders] crazy spacing issue -- was (no subject)

2006-04-13 Thread Keith Reinfeld
Hi,

The 'crazy spacing issue' is due to how you are setting the movePos variable
in the checkState function.

var movePos = menu["clip"+j]._x + (cliptoMove._width/2);

The problem here (when you scrub the mouse) is that you are grabbing the
clip's _x in mid-animation.

I suggest that you store an 'original X' property and a 'destination X'
property in each clip and use them instead.

Add this to your init function:

mitems._x = i * menuSpacing;// you already have this line
mitems.origX = mitems._x;
mitems.destX = mitems.origX;

Add this to your checkState function:

var movePos = menu["clip"+j].destX + (cliptoMove._width/2);
cliptoMove.destX = movePos;

And add this to to your moveBack function:

var origPos = cliptoMove.origX;//j * menuSpacing;
cliptoMove.destX = origPos;

Flash seems to miss some onRollOut events with fast mouse movement so you
may want to incorporate a moveBack routine for items that are to the left of
whichever item the cursor is over.

Also, this line:

delete menu["clip"+j].onRollOver;

as it stands, will never execute. But I don't see why you would ever want it
to anyway.

And finally, you should be sure to delete the clip.onEnterFrame when the
animation is complete.

Could you get the .htmlText of the text field and using split to pull
the link out?

txt.htmlText = "";
var a = txt.htmlText;
var b = a.split("")[0];
trace(c);
// link

There are also regex methods for Flash is you hunt around for them.

Flashtampa.com does a very good job at hosting ElectroServer and Unity at
reasonable costs. There is also webgamehost.com , but I've heard mixed

2006-04-13 Thread Éric Thibault

Did you know that INM is making a V12 database for Flash...

It's a Director movie that lunches your Flash App and from Flash you can
talk to the V12 database via Director...

here : http://www.inm.com/products/v12flash/

Steven Sacks a écrit :

Well, mProjector is able to communicate to COM objects on PC and I'm
pretty sure there's a Mac equivalent. But, it would probably take some
work to figure out how to make it work well. Director w/V12 might be
your only choice unless you want to code your own DB, so to speak.

What you might be able to do is launch an invisible Director movie
(offscreen) with a swf running in it that you would communicate with
from your main Flash app using LocalConnection for your db purposes.

The Adobe software such as PhotoShop works quite nice under Rosetta I
tried it in the Apple Store, and at school. The performance isn't as good
as the Powerbook G4 but good enough as long you don't need to edit big
photoshop files, it's good for website. If you need to use PSDs for
advertisements ( >200dpi a4-3 size) its killing. But hey Flash sucks
anyway on the mac, for me. It crashed 24 times in three hours today.

just embed the swf with a query string appened to it at the end.
if your swf is called myfile:
source="myfile.swf?randbits=012345" and also for the VALUE= tag...

AFAICT most browsers won't cache an url with a query string. if this
gets nasty write a script (server side or javascript on the client)
that appends a random query string at the end.

Hi List,

just wondering if anyone knows the exact size (in chars) a String literal

I noticed that 3MB is definitly too big ;)

My App (OCX wrapped wihth SWF Studio) just quitted silently.
If I save the contents to disk and clear the literal from time to time it
works well.

Re: [Flashcoders] optimize lineTo algorithm

2006-04-13 Thread Michael Bedar
This kind of algorithm could be quite intense.. If you are just
drawing it once, it may be faster to just draw the 500 points.
Optimization would depend on any assumptions you can make about the
data.

A brute force approach would be to just iterate through the points
and compare 3 at a time, saying that if the middle point of each
triplet was within a certain distance(tolerance) from the line formed
by the outer 2, then you could disregard that point.

On Apr 13, 2006, at 9:12 AM, Mick G wrote:

Does anyone know of any way to optimize a whole bunch of lineTo

I guess what I'm really after is an algorithm similar to the
"Modify > Shape

Optimize" command in the Flash API. Has anyone seen what type of math

formula is used for this type of command that is quite common in most
drawing apps.

[Flashcoders] (no subject)

2006-04-13 Thread Flash guru
Hey all,

I'm working on this nav system and it has one bug in it. I know there is
something wrong with my logic somwhere, I've just looked at it to long.
Basically the bug is if you roll your mouse from right to left to quickly
you get this crazy spacing issue. Any help would be great.

To make the following code to work just create a rectangle 75x11 and make it
into a symbol with a linkage name of 'clip'. That's it you don't need
anything on stage and put the following code in frame 1.

Thanks again

init();
function init(){
//initialize menu items
_level0.createEmptyMovieClip("menu",-1);
_global.menuNum = 6; //number of menuitems
_global.menuSpacing = 85;//spacing

On the other hand though there might be a tool out there that does this,
I've lost count of the number of times I've offered to help someone and it
turns out that what they need help with has been solved 109213 million times
and there are 954054 million tools out there that solve it 203420 million
ways.

Re: [Flashcoders] optimize lineTo algorithm

2006-04-13 Thread elibol
This is an awsome question. This type of optimization would have to function
differently than the way the Flash IDE optimizes shapes, it would need to
draw the graphics in its optimized state so there would need to be a whole
new API that you would use in place of the drawing API.

There are 2 things that would need to be considered, maybe more but I right
off the top of my head I can think of just curves and a set of 3 points or
more that are parallel and have a line being drawn through all of them.

The curves could done with the interpolation the curveTo function is capable
of.

Depending on the context, you might have to make optimizations for the
applications of this newer API.

I don't know of such a drawing tool for actionscript, but I will write this,
I know it won't be ready for whatever project you're working on, so I should
probably say that you probably shouldn't have 500 points drawing lines to
each other.

You should use low quality.

If you tell me more about the context I can help you optimize it.

[Flashcoders] Thanks! Where are you?

2006-04-13 Thread Daniel Cardenas

Hi List,

I'm new to the list and wanted to thank everyone who helped me out last
night with my EventDipatcher question, especially Stacey, Mike,
Johannes & Bjorn. I was a little overwhelmed - there were over 20
replies in a little over 12 hours. Most of you really took a moment to
try to understand the problem and help guide me. I couldn't have asked
for more.

I'm amazed at the level of activity here! People are posting at all
hours - where is everyone? I'm in New York City.

Any Flashcoder drink nights in the NYC area?

Thanks again -

Daniel Cardenas

might want to give out the class as well otherwise the example isn't much
help.

[Flashcoders] optimize lineTo algorithm

2006-04-13 Thread Mick G
Does anyone know of any way to optimize a whole bunch of lineTo points? Say
I have 500 points all fairly close that I'd like to reduce to fewer points.

I guess what I'm really after is an algorithm similar to the "Modify > Shape
> Optimize" command in the Flash API. Has anyone seen what type of math
formula is used for this type of command that is quite common in most
drawing apps.

Just wondering, are you using this macbook pro as a development

about how well the studio apps run in rosetta. Or any of the adobe

Thanks,

I dont see exactly why use for the event dispatcher.
Wouldn't this be good as well ?

Re: [Flashcoders] rss feed

2006-04-13 Thread Tim Braeckman
Isn't the URL of the XML file for the RSS-feed always the same?
Than you can write a php script which creates that xml file and link to it
from the flash movie...

Yes, duplicateMovieClip duplicates the clip and all it's subclips.

If any of you could clarify this topic, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Hey all -

I need to put together a SWF that pulls text quotes from an XML file on a
server and then sequentially animates them onto the screen in interesting
ways (typewriter style, fade in, etc). I was wondering if anyone knew of an
actionscript text effect library or a component of some sort that I could
use to do this. Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Re: [Flashcoders] Instantiate a class by string - SOLVED

2006-04-13 Thread Ian Thomas
Sorry, that's what I meant when I said...
"such as the declaration of a variable or the creation of an
object"

I should have provided a concrete example. :-)

As Scott says, working with .swfs is more like working with .jars than
you might think - particularly when you are working with MTASC/Swfmill
rather than the IDE. You can pick and choose which classes get built
into a given .swf in much the same way as you can with Java - if
you're so inclined.
