Google Pipwerks SCORM - nice classes and files to make your Flash communicate
with an LMS via SCORM.

Hi list,

assuming I have a flash movie which communicates with a custom CMS, what would
need to be done to make it scorm compliant?

As far as I can tell, I'll need some scorm as classes to communicatie with the
wrapper, but how can I test whether everything works, etc, I have absolutely no
experience with LMSes etc and to me it's kind of hazy how everything fits
together, which in turn makes it hard to know where to start/look. Is there a
definite scorm specs, which will work with any LMS, so that I can simply pick a
free open source LMS somewhere to test my development progress?

TIA

To have an idea what SCROM and LMS are, I recommend to read some
explanation in the moodle (as the most common LMS) docs:

When its only about video or flv:

some stuff is much more important than other stuff:
- DRY - don't repeat yourself: cache calculations (sinus tables, array
lengths, radian conversion etc)
- Create as few objects as possible, eg use ObjectPooling
- try to stay away from movieclips and sprites, use bitmaps and
spritesheets

whereever possible
- if rendering performance is your bottleneck, starling might help
- only cacheAsBitmap / Matrix if you know what you are doing
- only optimize if required, is your app running slow? If so, when?
- use a framecounter (eg mr doobs stats) to see where the framerate
drops

are
- use a profiler to see what your app is doing with respect to object
creation/memory
- dispose bitmapdatas if you no longer use them and can't reuse them
- etc etc

Now imagine a Model with more properties.
And tons of different Views of them that data.
Some of which provide a UI linked to Controller methods that manipulate it.

with photoshop.
Then take a blank png the size you need the dimensions at, combine the
two with PHP imagecreatealpha
then insert that in your game dynamically. No embedding necessary for
this approach.

I have a script I made that does just this. Thats why I made the
suggestion.
I was making a shopping cart for a flash site and had a lot of images
that were PNGs of product shots
but they were all different sizes. So i created this script to load
the image, then load the blank png
then size it to the size I needed then send it on to flash. While
keeping the original transparency.

Sry if this is not what you needed and I miss understood.

Hi Ben,

I am not 100% sure what exactly you wnat to achieve.
But why don't you use 2 jpg's with one as a masc where transperency is
black.

You can generate an alpha channel form this.
Check this:

I was able to build a Playbook app with Flash CS5 using this technique.

You can even do the same for iOS - in fact many folks using Flash CS5.5 are
doing this to get at the interpreter builds in AIR 2.7 for iOS (since they
compile so much more quickly, and can't be built from the GUI).

Lets say the big difference to 4.5 is, that you need to add the emulator

I have an explanation with Android SDK for eclaire, but when you change

No, not only would that be completely useless practically, but it's
not even possible. The old player does not have the new vm. They don't
understand the bytecode and they don't know of the tags related to it.

New players will ignore as 2 related tags when the swf declares that
it is as 2.

I dont think this is true, as even new players detect as 2 and play it.

Please pay more attention, I explicitly stated that they only do it
when the swf is declaring that it uses as 3.

The fact that I have already tested this should be evidence enough.

I actually asked a guy I know (nickname jan_flanders) to make a tool
to create a swf with both as 2 and as 3 code. It's not that useful in
practice, but at least I can prevent the main timeline from running
wildly on way too old players and can show an version error screen.

But if you want to code the application twice (u mad?), the tool is
designed to be able to do it.

I am mad on the fact: 80% of my customers want and use as2.

Thanks a lot in advance, and still searching adobe site for
documentations

They don't document this. And the tool is not publicly available. I am
happy to send it to whoever asks for it, but it is not for people who
doesn't even understand what it does.

If the goal is to get the MVC patterns& usage down correctly, that is.
In practice I'm definitely finding RL faster to develop with (particularly
with AS3 Signals), though with the caveat that handing off an RL project to

It seems you embed the font at the wrong place:

var tf:TextField = new TextField();

try instead:

Hi,

Your text field needs to have embedFonts set to true and you need the
corresponding font characters either embedded in that text field, or
another one used in the movie. embedFonts property should be True if
you set the embedding in the IDE.

An alternate hack for rotating is to do a bitmap "snapshot" of the text
field, then rotate the bitmap.

Did you check the spelling?

It throws the following error:

Why? What do?

Re: [Flashcoders] Masking w/ AS3

2010-03-01 Thread Beatrix Krümmer-Frau

Hi Susan,

when scripting a masc, you need to define it as a masc:

roundRect.mask = rect;
addChild(rect);

Beatrix

Susan Day schrieb:

Hi;
I have the following code:

function roundNavRect()
{
var roundRect:Sprite = new Sprite();
roundRect.graphics.beginFill(0x33030b);
roundRect.graphics.drawRoundRect(20,
20,
300,
660,
20,
20);
roundRect.graphics.endFill();
addChild(roundRect);
var rect:Sprite = new Sprite();
rect.graphics.beginFill(0x70081a);
rect.graphics.drawRect(20,
20,
300,
660);
rect.graphics.endFill();
roundRect.addChild(rect);
TweenLite.to(rect, 1, {y:-760});
}

I'd like "rect" to be nested within :roundNavRect" such that the latter acts
as a mask. Unfortunately, it's not doing that. How do I do that?
TIA,
Susan

When you add something, you need to remove it = addChild -> removeChild
Coming from AS2 you should understand DisplayObjects...then everything
is easy...

I think a lot of people on the flash lists don't realise how much money
some corporates invest in software development. $15K would be a fraction of
the development costs in some projects. It's a completely different
situation to freelancers that are working with their own development tools.
Corporates are rationalising development costs across many customers while
often freelancers/small companies are rationalising their costs from one or
very few customers.

More than that - Flex 1.x was around $15k USD according to our

You can completely go open source, developing flash and even flex
applications.
A good explanation how to use Flash Develop you can find here - even
when it covers flex 2:

Check the book from Friends of Ed. open source development with flash

Hi,
at this point i just want to remember what the pioneers, the masters of
flash, did for the success of Flash. Remember Ray of Light from Yasuto
Suga - the reason i started learning flash. With this "little" Banners
and experimentations, Desigerns work and Programmers effords -> Flash
grew and became what it is today. Flash needs both, also in the future,
i hope Colin this is what you mean in your article.
