[Flashcoders] Question: Fullscreen but want to retain a movieClip's width and height

2011-08-09 Thread Carl Welch
Hi Guys,
I'm building a video player with a fullscreen fuction. I am trying to figure
out how to maintain a movieClip's (video control bar) original height and
width while in fullscreen mode. I can't seem to wrap my head around how to
go about it.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Is it possible to make the List Component's background color transparent.

I googled and found this but it doesn't appear to work:

list.setStyle("borderStyle" , "none");

is there something else I need to do? or is it even possible.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Plus it may turn out to be pretty

Wow thanks for the advice. Crap, it took me almost a year make the switch
from AS2 to AS3. How long is going to take to learn obj-c? It's not at all
intuitive. Many of us were looking forward to jumping right in with CS5. Now
I get to be a newbie again and start from the very beginning? Think about
what that involves - remember what it was like to figure out how to use
Flash when you first started?

I think I will go completely insane if I go through the trouble of learning
obj-c (a year, maybe?), asking stupid questions on every iphone dev blog,
finally create an App, submit it to the store, only to have it rejected.

I can't even explain how frustrated I am about apple. I just feel that Mr
Job's is just giving the finger to so many people that have supported and
promoted his company since day one. ugh.

Dude. its easier than you think.
Just use mc.x, mc,y, and mc.z (z will push you forward or back in
space) there is also mc.rotationX,mc.rotationY,mc.rotationZ. Combine
that with the caurina library and you're good to go.

g'luck.

I personally have been getting more and more upset about apple's
stance on Flash. I feel the reason Apple's market share has increased
especially in the corporate environment is because designers and flash
developers have been evangelizing macs since day one. I feel like its
a slap in the face to the people that cheered them on the most.

this thought sounded better when I was drunk last night :P

Has anyone read the reviews of the apps that were created with Flash? There
were many complaints about the apps being really slow. Adobe should think
twice before releasing this software unless they are sure it will run as
well as a normal iphone app. They are running the risk of losing
credibility, including that of the Flash programmer that releases an app
with this tool.

Re: [Flashcoders] Playing an encrypted f4v

2009-07-14 Thread Carl Welch
Thanks for that info. Actually we have a fully licensed version of the
Flash Media Server, but to tell you the truth, We didn't care for how
the video streams from the server. My client really needs to have
smooth seek functions, plus want want to capture screenshots of frames
using the bitmap functions (FMS won't let you do this). If there is a
way to implement progressive streaming and still maintain a level of
security that would be great. They like the responsiveness of the seek
controls after the video fully (progressively) downloads. Where as,
with FMS the video has to re-buffer... the responsiveness just seem to
be lacking. If I am wrong about this, please correct me.

Security on this project is key, and of course as luck would have it,
one of the higher-ups had Real Player installed and is able to
download the videos we are loading. So, that's where the encrypted
video request comes in. To test, I was given a f4v encrypted with
blowfish. So I'm hoping I can load the f4v as a binary or bytearray
-decrypt and play... I'm having doubts that its even possible.

[Flashcoders] Playing an encrypted f4v

2009-07-13 Thread Carl Welch
Hi guys,

My client asked if I could load an encrypted f4v, decrypt it and then
play it. I found the as3Crypto libraries, so I have that part covered.
Now I'm wondering if its even possible to load the f4v as a binary
file or something, decrypt and then play it. I've tried a couple of
tests with an unencrypted file but I can't figure out how to get
around not using the netstream function.

 So basically my question is if this is even possible or am I headed
down a dead end street?

Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

Thanks.

[Flashcoders] Is there an AS3 equivalent of AJAX Suggest (like Facebook autofill searchbox)? is it even possible?

2009-05-15 Thread Carl Welch

Hi all,

I need to make an AS3 version this:
 http://www.w3schools.com/ajax/ajax_example_suggest.asp

I'm thinking I'll query the database for all of the users store that
in an array or xml and then attach a listener to the textfield that
will search the array everytime a character is added to the textfield

Has anyone out there attempted anything like this? Anyone know of an
existing class?

thanks!

Hi,

I need to place some text into a input text field - the user needs to
be able to edit some text (from a database) and submit it back to a
database. So far, though, I've been unable to pass any vars to the
input textfield like this: datatext.text = database_vars;

do I need to handle input textfields differently than a dynamic
textfield?

[Flashcoders] AS3 - How do I apply a function to a dynamically generated movieClip?

2009-04-26 Thread Carl Welch

Hi Guys,

I just realized I can't apply functions to MC's like I did with AS2. I
am creating a bunch of movieclips from some data I get from an xml
file. I wanted to create a rollover state for each of the mc's,
nothing fancy. Would some kind soul give me a nudge in the right
direction?

Here's what I'm doing wrong:

var myFolder:MovieClip = new folder_mcDefault();
myFolder.FolderName.text = FolderNode.name.text();
myFolder.x = 8.5;
myFolder.y = 70.2+(i*31);
myFolder.BG_Clickon.alpha = 0;
myFolder.buttonMode = true;
myFolder.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, f_rollon);
myFolder.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT, f_rolloff);
function f_rollon(evt:MouseEvent){
		// Back in AS2, I would have used "this" instead of
"myFolder" but that doesn't work either //

myFolder.BG_Clickon.alpha = .1;

}
function f_rolloff(evt:MouseEvent){
myFolder.BG_Clickon.alpha = 0;
}

[Flashcoders] changing video playback speed with timer listeners

2009-04-06 Thread Carl Welch

Hi,

I need to build a function that changes the playback speed of a FLV. I
am trying to make it so every time you hit the "+" key the FLV plays a
little faster, and when you hit the "-" key, it plays a little slower.

From what I've read, there is nothing built in. Someone suggested
building a timer script to seek a frame forward or back. So, I've done
that, but when I hit the keys its just creating a new timer and not
killing the old on, leaving me with a bunch of timer firing off at
varying times. How can I "KILL" the timer so I can create a new one
with a new timerspeed?

any clues? thank you! My sorry looking code is below:

var myTimerActive:int = 0;
var videoSpeed:int = 5000;
var videoSpeedVAR:int = 10;
var timerTimes:int = 0;

// hitting + or - will call videoPlaybackTimer(fastslow)

function videoPlaybackTimer(fastslow) {

if(fastslow == "faster"){
videoSpeed = videoSpeed+videoSpeedVAR;
}else{
videoSpeed = videoSpeed-videoSpeedVAR;
}
videoSEEK.text = timerTimes+" / videoSpeed: "+videoSpeed;

var myTimer:Timer = new Timer(videoSpeed);

myTimer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, timerHandler);

myTimerActive = 1;
myTimer.start();
timerTimes++
}

function timerHandler(event:TimerEvent):void {
stream.seek(stream.time+.1);
stream.pause();
}

[Flashcoders] AS3 - have a problem parsing my data from JSON

2009-03-30 Thread Carl Welch

Hi,

I'm having a difficult time pulling data out of some JSON I'm
currently working with. The following script is something that I found
online using Adobe's corelib to parse the JSON, but the sample JSON
the guy used was really basic. The one I'm working with has a few
levels. For example, how would I pull out the "date_created"? I've
tried calling it with dot syntax but I keep getting errors. Can
someone shed some light on this for me? Thank you in advance... Cheers!

The script I'm using with corelib:

import com.adobe.serialization.json.JSON;
var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader() ;
var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest() ;
request.url = "someJSON_URL" ;
loader.load(request) ;
loader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, decodeJSON) ;

function decodeJSON(event:Event):void {
var loader:URLLoader = URLLoader(event.target);
var evData:Array = JSON.decode("["+loader.data+"]");
myFlashVars.appendText("\n" + String(evData[0].xml));
for (var key:Object in evData) {
myFlashVars.appendText("\n" + "\n" + String(evData[key]));
}
}

My JSON looks like this:

{
  "xml": {
"device": {
  "view": {
"action": "getsummary",
"device": {
  "date_created": "2/28/2009 2:59:24 PM",
  "date_modified": "2/28/2009 2:59:24 PM",
  "device_id": "",
  "device_status": "active",
  "device_type": "other",
  "friendly_name": "Foo",
  "make": "Bar",
  "model": "999",
  "serial_number": "Test Serial No"
},
"error": {
  "code": 0,
  "message": ""
    },
    "owner": {
  "guid": "99",
  "partner_id": 0
}
  }
},
"session": {
  "class": "Device",

  "guid": "S999",
  "language": "en-us",
  "last_name": "Zappa",

}
  }
}

The comment about a client being 'none the wiser' and the
implication that you're just making the extra dough by handing off
some crap someone else did is what's not cool.

The point was, if you're repackaging something that someone already
did without any value add, then that's dishonest. Hands down, end of
story.

then stop using Flash and create your own programming language while
your at it...if you want to be completely"honest".

You pay a fee to use Flash, you also can pay a fee to use an extension
(read:component) inside of flash... speaking of components, I hope you
don't use the datagrid component either. But hey, go ahead and waste
all of your time and program your own - reinvent the wheel, go for it,
be super duper "honest" sheeesh. If tools are available to help
you finish your work in as little amount of time and with limited
amount of de-bugging needed, then use them my point was/is to
maximize your dollar to time ratio. If you quote someone $350 dollars
for a project and you finish it in an hour, you can say you make $350
an hour... but if it takes you 40 hours to do the same job you make
$8.75 an hour. I'm pretty sure that is minimum wage and you might as
well go work for Burger King. I don't know about anyone else here, but
I'm not in this business to make minimum wage. I have mouths to feed.
Dollar to time ratio, baby, that's what its all about when you're a
freelancer and I'm a one man sweat shop. No matter what you say or
think, you have to be a smart business person too as a good developer/
designer.

And for the record I am not affiliated in anyway with slideshowpro. I
just think the user interface is about as clean as they come and
clients love it... but then again, a lot of clients love powerpoint...

using tools of the trade is far from ripping clients off. Ridiculous
statement. As an Example, if I go to a restaurant and order eggs, is
the restaurant ripping me off because they don't raise the chickens

You are in this business to make money. And if you are like me and
juggling a number of clients at any given time, the quicker you finish
a job the better. Of course though, I've been using flash since 1996,
so I could actually build a "slide show" but I would charge at least
$700.

At least there will be an email post in the public domain that shows

[Flashcoders] AS3 - problem with sound object

2008-11-12 Thread Carl Welch

Hi guys,

I am working on a mp3 player that receives a javascript call with the
name of the file to be loaded. On the first call from JS, it plays
fine, but if another file is selected it fails. It only works once, in
other words. I tried putting the new Sound() and new SoundChannel()
inside of my playAudioA function, but then I just get endless layers
of audio, AND my other functions that reference the Sound and the
SoundChannel die.

Can someone take a look and tell me where I'm going wrong?

ExternalInterface.addCallback("playAudio",playAudioA);

var s:Sound = new Sound();
var sc:SoundChannel = new SoundChannel();

function playAudioA(audioPath, audioImage, trackid):void
{

try {
s.close();
}
catch (error:IOError) {
}

var req:URLRequest = new URLRequest(audioPath);
s.load(req);
s.addEventListener(ProgressEvent.PROGRESS, loadProgress);
s.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, loadDone);
sc = s.play();
}

Thank you!

Re: [Flashcoders] Attaching a change handler to a dynamically generated comboBox

I'm using Flash 9.

I just tried using this instead of setChangeHandler:

var myComboBox = myScrollBox.createClassChildAt Depth(mx.controls.ComboBox,
DepthManager.kTop, {_x:10, _y:10});

myCondition.change = function(eventObj){
//  combo = myComboBox.getSelectedItem().data;
 combo = myComboBox.selectedItem;
 trace(combo.label);
   }
myComboBox.addEventListener("change", myCondition);

... And it didn't work either. Any advice?

Thanks,

As a test, I tried:

myComboBox.onPress = function() {

... and it did trace the first item, but of course it wouldn't work as
a dropdown anymore.

Thanks.

Re: [Flashcoders] Flash https / IE wierdness

We had the same problem. We were banging our heads against the wall
trying to figure out why it wasn't working in IE over a https
connection until we found this:

   //header("Expires: Mon, 25 Jan 1970 05:00:00 GMT");
   header("Last-Modified: " . gmdate("D, d M Y H:i:s") . " GMT");
   header("Cache-Control: no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate");
header("Cache-Control: no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate,
post-check=0, pre-check=0");
   //header("Pragma: no-cache");

seem to make it all work in both IE and Firefox.

here's a googled cached version of the page explaining this:

Does IE handle https urls any different than Firefox?

Re: [Flashcoders] combo box problem

2007-05-30 Thread Carl Welch

I have the same situation. In mine, I am dynamically generating each
screen as the user navigates. It will work on the first screen that a
series of comboboxes appear, then on the next screen they show up but
don't work. I am completely deleting the movieclip that contains them.
Then I build a new MC container each time a user goes to a different
screen. I thought I was being safe with that set up.

Kinda relieved I'm not the only one that has run into this problem,
but its imperative that I fix it.

We're 6 weeks into our last AS2 project, with about a week left for
development. Now we hit what seems like a brick wall.

We select an item from the dropdown and it works fine the first time. The
second time it works okay. The third time it just stops
working.

There is apparently a reference in the component to the root timeline that
prevents it from operating normally. We've tried
_lockroot, we've tried swapping depths of __dropdown every single time you
click on the combo box. None of our hacks work.

We tried the bjc bitcomponent combobox and it looks horrendous and doesn't seem
to fire any of the events, either.

Any suggestions?

TIA,

Randy Tinfow

Re: [Flashcoders] Need help creating an old-skool arc or circularscrollbar

2007-05-24 Thread Carl Welch

Seems to me you guys are doing this the hard way. Why not just draw a
curved line (with the line tool) then use code to attach/snap the
handle to the line, and then just use actionscript to track the Y
position of the handle and scroll accordingly? Trig for a simple
scroller seems a little convoluted way of going about this simple
thing...The end user will never know or appreciate the difference
anyway.

Mark is true. Respect! :-)

I used Math.atan(), too and if/else to know, in which quadrant of the
circle the drag element is moved.

I uploaded my quick&dirty source now. Please be kind! :-)
http://lizu.net/circle.swf
http://lizu.net/circleSrc.zip

it consists of the circle drag mechanism, but I think, the scrolling
can be easily applied then with a 'rule of three' and the angle.

Use "while" instead of "for" loop statements. "for" will eat your resources,

You could also put some trace calls in the classes or methods you think

Additionally you might want to look into better organizing your
setInterval. Maybe put them in an array that you can query. When you
clear the interval set that index to null. You could trace the array
and see all the non-null values. Maybe you could also make a class to
manage your setInterval calls better. A clearAllIntervals method in a
interval management class could help out a great deal.

I've also had problems before with Delegate memory leaks. There was a
great article on Delegate memory management in the last year or so - I
can't remember where it was, but you can find a similar one here:

[Flashcoders] High CPU usage problems

2007-03-22 Thread Carl Welch

Hi Coders,

I've been having problem with some the apps I've been building. The CPU gets
really bogged down like with usage often at 100%.I tend to use alot of tween
classes, load external images and XML. I've never really had a good grasp of
what to do with things regarding memory usage(programatically). I like to
keep all my scripting on one frame and have function do what I need do.

Currently, I am having the problem with this project:
http://www.artandsignfx.com/temp.html

I programmed the "Portfolio Section". Bring up the task manager and watch
the performance graph. You can watch it start to bogg down after a while of
clicking around the portfolio section. Its loading xmls (one for the Side
Menu) and the other for the thumbnails and theire respective data. There are
quite a few createMovieClips and AttachMovieClips and some setIntervals -
which I do clear when I'm done. When I create a tween object I try to kill
it when I'm done using it with "delete myObject;" - not sure if that even
works.

Can anyone offer any advice or point me in the direction of a really good
article regarding this subject?.

[Flashcoders] xml parse question

2007-03-14 Thread Carl Welch

Hi coders,

I just started working on a new project that is requiring me to handle
an xml format that I haven't had to deal with yet.

Here is an example of what it looks like:

I'm used to parsing xml that looks like this:

"foo"

How do I parse xml that looks like the first example with multiple
values inside of a single node?

Thanks.

[Flashcoders] Scroll bar math question

2006-11-27 Thread Carl Welch

Hello All,

I have a movieclip that I attach a varying number of other movieclip that
are stacked vertically. I am trying to figure out some math that accounts
for the varying height of the scrolled movieclip. I am having a problem with
the math though. I am using something that looks like: buttonMask._y =
60+(-(this._y)/ratio);
the "ratio" variable comes from the movieclip with the stacked (attached)
movieclips DIVIDED by the height of my scroll bar. But it doesn't seem to
work well. The scroller moves my movieclip too high. I don't even know how
to make this sound with out sounding like an idiot

Here's my code:

//buttonMask is the movieclip that gets the other movieclips loaded into.
//line is part of my scrollbar & dragger is my little scroll knob that gets
dragged

dragger.onPress = function() {
startDrag("dragger", true, line._x, 30, line._x, line._height+30);
ratio = (buttonMask._height/line._height);

this.onEnterFrame = function() {
 buttonMask._y = 60+(-(this._y)/ratio); /http://www.carlwelch.com

[Flashcoders] problems with dataGrid.selectedIndex

2006-11-15 Thread Carl Welch

Oi!

I have built a mp3 player using xml to give me all of my links to
files, data, etc...
The data loads into a datgrid.
One of the requirements I needed to meet was to be able use a url
query-string to directly link to a mp3 to play on load: exampe:

http://mysite/audio.php?titleid=10&trackid=71

This works fine. But I also need to hilite the correct row in the
datagrid when I use the query-string when the swf loads. Here's what
I'm using:

songList_lb.selectedIndex = myTrack_Pos;
songList_lb.dispatchEvent({type:"change", target:songList_lb});

It seems like selectedIndex will only work if the user has already
clicked on the datagrid. But I want a row to be selected when the swf
loads before the user has had a chance to select anything...

I hope I am making sense. Thanks.

Hi all,

I am trying to dynamically set a particular item in the list

Here's what I'm using:

Any ideas?

try {
   var keyStr:String;
   var valueStr:String;
   var paramObj:Object = LoaderInfo(this.root.loaderInfo).parameters;
   for (keyStr in paramObj) {
   valueStr = String(paramObj[keyStr]);

if (keyStr =="process"){
trackName.text = valueStr;
myVar.text = keyStr;
}

if (keyStr =="mySong"){
mySong.text = valueStr;
//myVar.text = keyStr;
}
if (keyStr =="myTable"){
myTable.text = valueStr;
//myVar.text = keyStr;
}

   }

} catch (error:Error) {

[Flashcoders] FileReference and mac file types

2006-10-29 Thread Carl Welch

I have an project that needs to allow users to only upload mp3 files.
It works fine on a PC. But on a mac the mp3 files are greyed out and
the user is unable to select a file. Here is my code below: What am I
missing?

var fileRef:FileReference = new FileReference();
fileRef.addListener(listener);
browse.onRelease = function() {
upload.enabled = true;
fileRef.browse([{description:"Audio files", extension:"*.mp3",
macType:"mp3"}]);
};

Thanks for your help...

Re: [Flashcoders] Flash File Upload using .NET

2006-10-19 Thread Carl Welch

I've found that when uploading using FileReference, my files end up
being read only by the owner (chmod 600). Which in turn doesn't allow
the file to be read back into my swf Does anyone know of a way to
make it chmod to 644? I 've tried to make php set it to the proper
chmod but to no avail. Or maybe someone can enlighten me to what may
be causing this I did set the php to safe_mode off - In hopes that
would help me solve the issue -- but no, it didn't... Cheers.

Thanks, but that still didn't work.
Here's a screenshot of what I have now:

but I'm trying to make it look more like this:
http://www.carlwelch.com/listBoxsample/listbox2.jpg

this the code I'm using:

import mx.styles.CSSStyleDeclaration;
if (_global.styles.DataGrid == undefined) {
_global.styles.DataGrid = new CSSStyleDeclaration();
}
_global.styles.DataGrid.setStyle("alternatingRowColors", [0x00, 0x0B0B0B]);
_global.styles.DataGrid.setStyle("color ", 0xFF);
_global.styles.DataGrid.setStyle.color = "white";
_global.styles.DataGrid.setStyle("themeColor", "haloBlue");
_global.styles.DataGrid.setStyle("borderStyle", "solid");
_global.styles.DataGrid.setStyle("borderColor", 0x66);

if (_global.styles.List == undefined) {
  _global.styles.List = new CSSStyleDeclaration();
}
_global.styles.List.setStyle("color", 0xFF);

if (_global.styles.Tree == undefined) {
_global.styles.Tree = new CSSStyleDeclaration();
}
_global.styles.Tree.setStyle("color", 0x00);

[Flashcoders] Font color in datagrid component

2006-10-15 Thread Carl Welch

I'm trying to make the color of text white in a datagrid. it doesn't
seem to be working, though. The text looks dark blue against a black
background. Also is it possible to change the color of the top part of
the datagrid. Even though I have the cells set to an alternating color
of black and grey, the column labels stay white.

I googled but couln't find anything helpful...

import mx.styles.CSSStyleDeclaration;
if (_global.styles.DataGrid == undefined) {
_global.styles.DataGrid = new CSSStyleDeclaration();
}
_global.styles.DataGrid.setStyle("alternatingRowColors", [0x00, 0x0B0B0B]);
_global.styles.DataGrid.setStyle("color ", 0xFF);
_global.styles.DataGrid.setStyle("themeColor", "haloBlue");
_global.styles.DataGrid.setStyle("borderStyle", "solid");
_global.styles.DataGrid.setStyle("borderColor", 0x66);

Carl,

Everything in AS3 is classes, so you can't do anything without using
classes.
It's actually easier than attachmovie. Just make a

var newMC=new MovieClip();
this.addChild(newMC);

feels alot cleaner that
attachmovie("gf","gf"+_root.getNextHighestDepth(),_root.getNextHighestDepth(
));
doesn't it ;).

good luck!

ps. you can checkout senocular.com , he has some excellent tutorials on AS3

[Flashcoders] pass variables between classes in AS3

2006-07-27 Thread Carl Welch

I have an AS3 document class where I load and parse an xml file into
an array. I would like to pass that array to a movieclip(?) class -
basically its a button that will create new movieclips that will
differ based on my xml array. How in the world do I get the array from
the document class to other classes... arggg! as3 is blowing my mind.
I've googled but I can't find anything that make sense to my as2
brain.

Thanks again.

doh! I was thrown by the lack of quotation marks for the linkage name.

thanks

In the library, right click on the symbol , click on Linkage. There select

Now on timeline do this

var myGf = new gf()
this.addChild(myGf)

this is equivalent to attachMovie
