I've experienced this exact same thing. I've never really been able to
pin down the cause. FB seems to build faster at times than other times.
It could be my setup just as well as FB. Breaking the projects up and
closing them does help a bit. Using ant helps sometimes. Using RSL's

Hey Matt, I'm not sure that's the case on switching
licenses. When I wanted to switch my CS2 over to Mac because I was switching
they told me I would have to buy another full license of the software to be
able to get a Mac license. I was pretty irked

Besides the builder, Flex2 is a lot cleaner in figuring stuff
FlexBuilder 2 is much better than FlexBuilder 1.5. It is based on Eclipse and has better development work flow, debugging capabilities, project management and much more.
