in the removed view I get ride of the listeners in the unload

your views SWFs that you're loading into a SWFLoader?-

RE: [flexcoders] Garbage collection and removeChild [Flex 2 beta
3]?Thank you, this clears some things up. :)I was actually
allocating memory up to 100mb and then seeing if it'scollected by letting
it sit there with no activity, and watching the processmemory usage
(couldn't think of another way)."You can later remove a component from
a container using the removeChild()method. If there are no references
to the component, it is eventuallydeleted from memory by the garbage
collection mechanism of Flash Player."The above taken from the doc's,
lead me to believe that there was a garbagecollection process every
(x)min's. If the player only does this when itneeds to get back memory,
then that would explain why I did not see itcollected. What lead me
to the question was the following scenario:I have a single component
based on the viewstack for the views, thiscomponent listens for event
state changes in the program to load new views, the events it gets come
from another class (think observer pattern). So withthis I can load
multiple copies of a view with different data(this is whereI seen a
problem). Even though a view was removed from the viewstack itstill
received data change events (which it listens to in order to see if
itneeds to load new data (think chain of responsibility here) where each
viewgets the event and decides if the data is destined for it (the data it
selfis just a guid that I use to reference the xml data needed to be
loaded). The scenario may seem weird, but no object knows what data is
being accessedexcept the view that is responsible for displaying
it.If the view was really unloaded then the event should not get
through. Sonow I remove a view, and in the removed view I get ride of the
listeners inthe unload event, clean up any child objects/classes/data
providers etc..So the view dataprovider modelloader
   etc.. controller etc..From what I
understand from your answer is that if the view is removed, andI clean up
the listeners and "local" references i.e. (set dataprovider andcontroller
  to null)view dataprovider controllerThen
I should be alright. Is this correct? My original thinking was that if
it's removed to the garbage collection howis it that it's still getting
the events? I was thinking that this was aprotected space. I can't get the
instance back from the garbage collection, however the instance is still
very much alive and kicking. Is this making sense? Are these correct
  assumptions?Thank you for your help.Jason-Message

that you think should cause it to be collected? Do youkeep allocating

Player decides it needs the memory. Should one have to remove all
objects created through the or just on the child being
removed?I'm not really following your texavery toto

suppose you're removing totoas a child of texavery. If you're not keeping
any references to toto ortiti, then both become eligible for garbage
collection; the fact that totoholds a reference to its child titi doesn't
matter, because the two of themare isolated from all other
objects. Is there a way to force the garbage collection clean
up, or destroy an object completely? There are no APIs for
controlling garbage collection. Once there are noreferences to an object,

So, I'd guess that means, no... not next week, but sometime

soon.

Speculation says that Adobe's latest earnings were hurt

I don't have one but one of our customers wrote and provide the text below.
It is regarding FP 8 so my next thought was...what about 9? We're about to Flex
(trick) out our site so this is a crucial component to the success of our site.

Troubleshooting Macromedia Flash Player
for Intel-based Macs
This document provides troubleshooting
guidelines for users of the Macromedia Flash Player by Adobe and Intel-based
Macs. Adobe has provided a preview release of Flash Player 8 for Intel-based Mac
users, which is available for download from this TechNote. The preview release
of Flash Player 8 runs natively on Intel-based Macs, but it has not been
extensively tested and customers may run into compatibility, performance, and
other issues. Alternatively, users can view Flash content on Intel-based Macs
with Safari in Rosetta mode. Running the Flash Player preview release in Rosetta
mode may be noticeably slower than when running on a PowerPC-based
Mac.
Adobe plans to support the new Intel-based
Macs with Flash Player 9, after the initial release of the Windows and
PowerPC-based Mac versions. The preview release of Flash Player 8 for
Intel-based Macs will then be replaced with a final release version of Flash
Player9 for the platform. For more information about Flash Player and
Intel-based Macs, see...

AW: [flexcoders] converting from screen display to print ready PDF

First off, I want to say thanks much for all the efforts not only ofthe
team that has created Flex but also a thanks to everyone in theFlex
community. Now I'm gonna pose my question just to see if anyone can point
me inthe right direction. I have a flex application that has a few
imageelements drawn within a panel. I am then passing the X and Y
coordsof those elements to a pdf generator and I'd like to create a
hiresPDF that looks just like the view on the panel but with all
hireselements. The problem is that I can't figure out a smart way
toconvert the pixel coords over to inch/mm/pt measurements needed by
myPDF generator.Has anyone had to do hi-res prints via PDF before?
Is there a betterway for me to do this than to try and generate a PDF on the
fly? Thanks for any help.::Mark

Just to make things simple, I created the simples possible example of the problem. If you take the below text, drop it into an app, You should see four hello items in the dataGrid. If you move your mouse over the items, you should see that only the last item in the list of 4 hellos highlights, no matter where the mouse is. (at least hopefully you will see it... if not that would be*really* wierd)

Re: [flexcoders] Re: programatically assigning an ArrayCollection as the DataProvider bug...

2006-06-24 Thread hank williams

Oh there is a slight bug in the last example. The problem occurs for a List or a DataGrid. I was playing with both and in the example, I add strings to the dataProvider instead of objects. Flex really doesnt mind except for the fact that it makes the word length the column header. But even if you make the dataGrid a list, it doesnt work. Nothing works. But the documentation does say it *should* work.

[flexcoders] Using Eclipse to create a central library

I have several projects in eclipse. I have a library of code that I want to be able to use in multiple projects including flex. How do I tell a flex app or eclipse, to look in another project in my workspace for the code? I dont want to change the path of my code for each project. I want my package path to remain the same for each new package that needs access to my common code. Any ideas on how to do this?

Hi!

Tnx for all the help...it was very usefull. But still I'm getting some
strange errors when running the application for the first time.

When I for the first time try to submit blank text fields I get this
error:

As soon as I type something in the text fields the application starts
to work. Even if I again supply blank fields. What could be the
problem? Below is my XML file and MXML:

Here's how you include other directories as part of source code in a project in eclipse1. right click on the folder that is your flex project.2. select properties down at the bottom of the menu3. in the panel on the left side, select Flex Build Path
4. in the source path tab, press on the button add folder5. Navigate to the folder *containing the folder or folders that you want to include. For my structure I had a directory called src that contained folders like com. So in my case I selected src. This is necessary so that you can find fully qualified package paths.

[flexcoders] Javadoc like comments for AS3

2006-06-24 Thread hank williams

I am wondering what the MM strategy is for commenting AS3. I would really love to be able to add javadoc comments, and compile some kind of code documentation. It seems as though the editor, on some level, understands the idea of javadoc because if on a blank line you type /* the stuff below turns green. It knows its a comment. But if you type /** (the signal for this is javadoc) it turns blue.
But it doesnt auto create the parameter signatures and I dont see any other reference to documentation in flex. Of course it is very possible I have missed something, so I am just curious if anyone else has any insight.

RE: [flexcoders] how do you dispatch event from a custom class?

2006-06-24 Thread Paul Williams
Hi Jon,

Event bubbling exists specifically for display objects. It is generally
used for events like mouse clicks and keyboard presses. A limited subset
of Flex events bubble so that they can be intercepted all the way up the
display list.

There is some good documentation on this at the link below:

http://livedocs.macromedia.com/labs/1/flex20beta3/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/
html/wwhelp.htm?context=LiveDocs_Partsfile=0475.html

If you really need bubbling, then you will need to put your object on
the display list. Alternatively you can use a solution that doesn't
require bubbling. The simplest solution would be to create your listener
directly on your WebServiceCheck object.

I've pasted a demo app that may be helpful. Create a new project, and
place both files in the project's root directory. The project shows
event capturing from instances of a custom class. CustomObject1 is not
placed on the display list; customObject2 is placed on the display list
in actionscript; and customObject3 is placed on the display list in
MXML. When you run it you will see that bubbling up to the Application
only happens for customObjects 2 and 3. Since customObject1 is not on
the display list, the only way to receive events dispatched from it is
to create an event listener directly on the object.

Note that I have used UIComponent as the base class for my custom class
rather than Sprite because it is more compatible with the other flex
classes. If you are creating objects that dispatch events but do not use
bubbling, then you do not need to descend from UIComponent. For example,
Validator descends directly from EventDispatcher.

While there is no doc generating tool available at the moment, you
can auto insert a template comment of sorts.

[flexcoders] Breeze, SyncSWF and Flash 9?

2006-06-24 Thread mark_g_wales

This is mostly a question for the Adobe folks who monitor this list
but happy to hear from anyone who knows the answer.

Is there a timetable of any kind for updating the Sync SWF product to
permit the inclusion of Flash 9-based SWFs in Breeze?

My understanding is that the current iteration only permits Flash 8
and below. Not being able to embed Flex 2-based SWFs in Breeze seems
like it could be a detriment to both products.

Thanks,

-Mark

Ok... I did more research, and have
found that in Flex 2, you DO NOT have to do any special conversions on the ColdFusion side. The
Flex 2 Gateway automatically changes the query object to an
ArrayCollection.

I
fixed up my application, and the app source code is below. My CFC just

Ah-hah! I was trying to return a query.

  The problem is
I'm trying to get data from a query returned by a CFC into a
datagrid. Before, I was having problems getting data back.

Ineversuspected that Adobe would take away behaviors from
flash remoting flash CFFORM's... I didn't notice that I had to transform a
query into an array of structures before sending it back to flex. Seems like a
huge oversight to me, Adobe now I can't re-use my already built CFC's from
existing applications... I have to tweak them
all.

Am I missing something, or is that the only way to
return a query?

Actually (I may be wrong)... You can have one
ArrayCollection, and several ICollectionView's with different filter
functions.

If I'm right, that should be faster use less memory

Anyone using ICollectionView's?

IMO, those who decide to use Flex to do website designs rank right with those who did all that other crap in the early days of flash with bouncing balls and forced site intros and such. Hi Luis,
I recommend CFlex. It's a great resource site for article, tips, jobs, etc... You could add and get free Flex components from the code library.
http://www.cflex.net/
There a lot of other site that also offer this kind of thing. I imagine that once Flex2 gets going, Adobe might have something similar to the Flash exchange for Flex. There you could get free, share and pay components. Until then, keep browsing.
