Re: [Flightgear-devel] (offtopic) Terrain
Hi Erez, We also have a 3D tactical display which is an expansion of what you called Terrain-aided navigation. Ah... this Terrain-aided navigation (TAN) is just another method of positioning, just like GPS or standard NAVs (like VOR, NDB etc.). The method is simple; the aircraft samples the height of the ground below, and tries to correlate this measurment with a pre-sampled heightmap. When combined with other equipment, it can be useful. It's a 3D map overplayed by tactical information like routs, avoidance zones, ILS cones, TCAS display etc. Sounds like fun (but not exactly TAN as presented in my project). As for DTED data, I suppose that u need a model of our homeland, and that you need to run it in FlightGear. In fact, I have no constraints to Israel's heightmap, but it could be nice to fly over BGU ;) I didn't find a FREE Level 1 data yet. me neither... There is a Level 1 data from the Ofeck company but they want money for that data. I have some of that data at work but since it's propriety data I can't just give it 2 you. Hm... maybe we have something in the university. I'll ask in the department of Geography. I'm not sure they're willing to contribute data outside the campus, but it worth trying. FlightGear could benefit from another terrain area. I'm trying to compile FlightGear scenery from that data but didn't succeed yet. Currentlly stuck on TerraGear compilation issues. Behatzlacha :) (good luck in hebrew). All the best, Elady. ~ ___ Elad (elady)[EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ ( \ J. [Flightgear-devel] (offtopic) Terrain elevation data
Hi There, Does anybody know where I can find a sampled heightmap (of any place on earth, at any resolution) ? I need to submit a project about terrain-aided navigation, and I need to run some simulations (and somehow, I feel that using synthetic-noise maps is much like cheating). A brief search on the web lead me to nowhere (I didn't look at the right places, I suppose), except for some 3DS meshes (which are either synthetic, or not equally distributed as a grid, or broken links :) ). The 3D demos all work and I'm running Mandrake 9.0 with a NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200. FlightGear-0.9.1 Finally got FG to complie, but when I try to start it, I get the following message. This is after it sets up the default airplane(C172) and airport(KSFO). Any ideas? I use Debian Sid, and I suffered from the same problem. I first thought it had something to do with the transition from gcc2.95 to gcc3.2 Debian is now going through, (all my c++ progs started acting funky), but I then upgraded the driver (downloaded from nVidia's site), and the problem is now gone (spooky :) reminds me of windows) Try using the latest drivers from nVidia (and make sure you remove the GLCore library from the modules-section of the XFree86-4 file). [Flightgear-devel] Possible Debian unstable problem ?
Hi, Something went wrong in flightgear during my last dist-upgrade (sid)... and I think it has something to do with the transition from gcc 2.95 to 3.2. (it fails to load some shared libraries). In any case, my CVS compiled version works fine, but the one in Debian's database fails to run. I'll try to uninstall and install FG (as well as plib/simgear) to see if it helps. Re: [Flightgear-devel] question about 3d models
Once upon a time, you were sitting and writing: ... I was wondering if there has ever been talk of exposing 3d models through a metalanguage in XML, or maybe to a spec such as SVG (though I guess SVG is 2d, not 3d). In this way, a person might not have to run off and download/pay for/learn some heavy duty 3d program to render some sort of basic aircraft frame, or building, or even cockpit. FOA, I think VRML is the answer to your question (??), not neccesarily in FlightGear. Besdies, I do no underdtand if you refer the difficulties in rendering, or modeling. For instance, you can download GMAX for free (from Discreet's site), which is a freeware modeler based on 3D studio MAX. Re: [Flightgear-devel] Electrical system
Once upon a time, you were sitting and writing: But, even if I do something simple, this could have a pretty far reaching impact. Each instrument would have to check the status of the electrical system (voltage? on/off?) IMHO 1. Voltage - how much (5,12,24,48,,,)V, 2. Max current - how much (voltage alone is not enough to drive a power circuit). The engine shouldn't turn over/start if their is no battery/alternator. As well as oil pumps, fuel pump (and I don't remember what else in C172, but more in other planes). We'd also want to consider failures as well ... bad battery, bad alternator -- fuses? Shortcuts, opencircuits, random current leaks, current/voltage spikes (burn non-isolated IC) and more. If the alternator fails or is turned off, we might want to model limited battery life. We might want to model a battery in general I presume. I think it should be a class having a teminal with voltage, current, and amount of electric charge in the battery. The battery should also be able to work in two modes of: power source, and power drain (when in charge mode). I'm not familiar with the system of battery-alternator circuit, but I can think of a simple model. As for the rest of the system, the most simple model I can think of is a parallel system of resistors, and power sources. All instruments share the same voltage and behave essentially like a ohmic resistor (consume real power). While this is not true at all for real-life systems, it should be enough for a start (and even later on). The most simple model consists of one battery, one alternator, ignition/starter (high volt./current.) and electronic subsystem (which consumes low power). Has anyone put any thought into implimenting electrical systems? I fly to the US next week, and come back three weeks later. After I come back, I can start doing something nice in it (but first, I want to finish the turbine engine model I started working with Dave Culp). After I finish that (and perhaps incorperate it in JSBSim somehow), the electric system would be nice to play with. Cheers, Elady. //// (o)o) (-)-) booom ! ( ._.)(o) Elad (elady) J. Hi Guys, I know you hate it... and this topic seems to be endless on FGFS-Devel group, AND this discussion does not belong in here, but you guys are the only ones I trust... so here goes: am I going to replace my TNT2Ultra with a GeForceMX2 ? (you are going to decide for me) FGFS runs nicely on my TNT2U (I think it's the latets debianized packacge, 0.7.8), but the MX is cheap (60$) and, seems to be a lot better. However, no benchmark actually put both cards on the row and see which performs better. Once upon a time, you were sitting and writing: Would it be possible to model skyglow in FlightGear? That way you could see when you're approaching a city, even when you can't see it for mountains etc. Interesting question. You could either try volumetric fog rendering (yeah sure- on my GeForce9000), or seek for the right OpenGL technique. I'm not a big expert in such phenomena (so correct me if I'm wrong), but I guess fog and particles (and clouds) are the reason for the sky glow. One can render a thin yellow cloud layer to create a nice illusion. The city itself is a huge lightsource which should be used to illuminate the terrain (and objects) around.
