[Flightgear-devel] Updated F4E

2006-04-01 Thread Ron Jensen
Hi All,

I've finally switched to fgfs 0.9.10 today. I've already got my F4 up
and running under the new system.

If you'd like to check it out its at http://www.jentronics.com/fgfs/ ,
The 2D panel requires Dave Culp's T38, I think...

Most of the 3D instruments are there, although some need work. The
airspeed (mach) indicator doesn't work right. Replacing that will be my
next project. Along with the warning light panel and gear/flap
indicators. And more accurate fuel flow. The fuel gauge on the panel
only reads internal fuel (like the real F-4).

The model is configured with 700 gallons of external fuel, so it takes
awhile for the fuel needle to move off of full. If anyone wants to do a
serious cross country flight tanks 23 can hold an additional 320
gallons each.

The DME readout on the HSI is currently hard-coded to TACAN, The course
needle reads off of VOR1. I'd suggest getting my TACAN Frequency
patches so the TACAN channels work right:
http://www.jentronics.com/fgfs/TACAN_freq.dat.gz
http://www.jentronics.com/fgfs/carrier_nav.dat.gz
(these two files drop into $FG_ROOT/Navaids)

If anyone would like to jump in and remodel the wings and fix up the UV
maps so we can start texturing let me know... Or perhaps fixing up the
FDM and key maps so the dragchute (a.k.a braking chute) functions...

Ron

I used to copy the texture layer in Gimp and use the Threshold color
function fro around 100 to 255 to make a black and white layer. Now you
can either use the lighten only at around 80% opacity, or Soft Light
mode in the Layers dialog to combine the two.

Hi Rob, hi all!

I am very glad you are such an engaged contributer to FlightGear and
have seen that you are improving your skills during the work.

But I am sorry to say - after testing your latest work - that these
textures should not be the default FlightGear textures for the next release.

1. They are not universal or generic world-wide
They might fit for US-America but absolutely not for the local area of
Northern Europe. The old textures were not best possible but fit much
more better if I compare it.

2. General quality is poorer
And the new textures are POOR IN CONTRAST especially in the areas where
the satellite made his shots through clouds. This is also the main
reason I am not satisfied. Poor contrast gives the impression of poor
color display (not wrong color display).

The old textures have more contrast and better colors.
3. Structure sizes wrong?
One can also discuss wheather the size of the displayed structures
(fields, houses) are as they should be, especially comparing the
different textures against each other.

THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM FOR ME as I just take the old ones.
But the impression a newcomer to FlightGear will have at first glance is
important and therefore we should provide the new textures as an
alternative to the old ones, not as the default.

Rob, hat up for your work. But please understand that I frankly and free
tell my opinion. If something replaces really good stuff in the
FlightGear default package then it should be of higher quality than the
old materials. You have not reached this point now with your work after
my opinion.
Keep on working. Get better basic photos free from cloud disturbances
and more universal. Improve your graphic skills. Show us what you are
able to. Accept for now your textures are a good alternative but are not
able to hit the old ones.

Anyways, Thanks for everyone's input. These textures are really looking
good!

I actually took the time to look at them and to point out in which files I

If the graphics load is too much then perhaps the answer is more
agressive use of LOD and simpler models.

What sort of FPS does everyone get? I get about 10-15 on a fairly grunty
laptop with 0.9.9 windows version and at 7 - 11fps with the CVS version
compiled with Cygwin. I can run MSFS2004 with more detailed scenery locked
at 30fps with out problem.

I don't agree, the new textures work a lot better for the region I live,
(Cologne-Bonn area) than the old ones. Flying through the rhine valley
and not seeing crop fields on steep rock is definitely an improvement.
Also the wooded areas are a lot better recognizeable (like the woods

In my opinion too much contrast doesn't look realistic. The mid european
(bad) weather and haze is not very rich in contrast. Airports are a lot
better recognizeable with the new textures. The edges of the texture
regions are looking better with lesser contrast.

 3. Structure sizes wrong?

Had a chance this morning to look at your new textures

Looks like the blue problem with the drylake beds has been fixed. One
of the problems with the edwards scene is number of runways FG
produces, there in only one large north-south concrete runway with a
dry lake overrun ( 15K and 9K in length) and a small strip for the local
flying club. Everything else is a dry-lake bed surface (good as
concrete) with painted numbers and outlines/centerlines defining the
runway boundaries. I guess FG applies a regular runway texture to these
as well. If you had a runway texture with an alpha channel of zero for
the surface and something approaching 1.0 for the stripping and numbers,
you could blend the texture with the underlying surface and create the
runway. Or just render the dry lake beds sans runways...

Two main dry lakes, Rogers next to Edwards and Rossamond about 10 miles east

Things really get bleached by the sun, just like the paint on the east
and south side of your house. The dry lake beds are very uniform in
color and texture. Took a look with Gimp at the .rgb files. Thinking a
a lighter shade of sand in #4 and #5 would be more realistic rather than
#1,2, or 3. Even a very light concrete: would work.

For some reason, I'm not seeing the same scene you've posted on your
webpage, which by the way looks d--- good! Still a lot of green in my
scenes. Do you need the latest CVS source for things to render
correctly? Currently using a post -0.9.9 CVS version from around
mid-January. Or a fresh download of the base package?

Taking off from an airport in the LA basin and climbing north over the
San Gabriels, you see the urban scene below, the dark forest green of
the mountains with the gray of the higher peaks (snow in the winter)
above the treeline ahead, and the vast expanse of bright desert beyond
as you crest the ridge line. The contrast/demarcation/transition between
the north side of the mountains and the desert floor is quite quick and
distinct.

John W.

[Flightgear-devel] RE: b1900d hotspots ...

2006-04-01 Thread syd sandy

That's because it's a condition lever, not a mixture lever. I had put
this mapping into one of the b1900d files

  controls.adjMixture = controls.adjCondition;

and added the help entry about the m/M keys, but it didn't take long
until the line was removed again, after which I didn't bother any more and
fixed this in my copy alone. I've also sent a shockingly constructive
message about that to the b1900d author.

m.

Hi guys , there have been a lot of suggestions /complaints about my b1900d ,
but Ive mentioned more than once that i am in the process of giving it a major
overhaul, so no point in replying/fixing right now .Ive integrated the gpws ,
redoing gauges, fixed the stall problem / fixed the autopilot/added the
flightdirector bars etc,etc,etc..
I should be able to send it tonight or tomorrow , and then evereyone can tell
me if things are still working. oh yeah , Ive disabled the popup gps, for those
who want it I'll try to add comments to the necessary files for those who want
it .So be patient , your current b1900d is pretty much obsolete! :)

[Flightgear-devel] Key mappings changed?

2006-04-01 Thread Yavuz Onder

Hi,

I have updated my CVS directories this afternoon (Saturday Apr 1 UTC
18:00 approx). After the two of the keys I use often lost their functions.

I use keyboard controls, and particularly the inverse T cursor keys, and
the block just above them.

The Insert/Delete keys just above left cursor key used to be
elevator trim. Now Delete key does nothing perceptible, whereas the
Insert key does left rudder, which happens to be the keypad Ins
key's function.

I checked keyboard.xml hoping to find a quick fix, but these keys do not
appear there at all.

So I am puzzled.

I hope someone in the know can tell me what might be the reason. I am
badly inconvenienced as a virtual pilot. :-) (BTW, I know that keypad
7/1 can do the same trim function as well, but they are far off from the
block I keep my hand on.)

Thanks,

Yavuz Onder
