I think we safely can assume that navaids and atc frequencies are turned

Robin's v8.10 files are unmaintained since August 2008, v8.50 since

For his current airport collection I think it might well be worthwhile
to feed the airfield name changes back to Robin, after the changes have

I remember Robin as responding late but reasonable, thus I assume

2011-12-11 Thread HB-GRAL
Am 08.12.11 13:36, schrieb HB-GRAL:
 Hi all

I am recently trying to update apt.dat airport names (in all flightgear
relevant data versions, means original xplane 8.10/8.50 and flightgear
apt.dat). I noticed caps in names, i.e. I am changing this names to

It is not in specs of xplane 8.50 apt.dat version, but I found

- 5935 Heliports are marked with [H] in the the name
- 568 Seaports are marked with [S]
- 2 Gliderports are marked with [G]
- 36 Airports closed are marked with [X]

in apt.dat (called xplane apt.dat 9.00 or so, but still based on 8.50).

We are on flightgear of course, but I will try to submit my changes to
original data too, so I need to keep my eyes open to what xplane uses.
Also the deprecated row in airport line still exists in xplane data =
8.5 (but still not used in xplane I guess).

I decided to mark the closed airports in apt.dat now with [X] in name,
to keep it in line with xplane without using the deprecated row. Another
reason to use [X] and not closed might be the length of the name: I
have only 40 chars for the airport name, so adding the word closed
will give me more lines with wrong count I guess.

The result of current processed apt.dat is:
- Cleaned 62 airport lines with wrong count of chars in elevation row
(minor cleaning)
- marked ~100 airports as closed with [X] at beginning of airport name,
changed name to upper/lower when needed, state based on ourairports.com data
- changed 3001 airport names to upper/lower, NO OTHER change in name for
the moment

You can find the changed apt.dat here:
http://download.fgx.ch/data-update/20111211-apt.dat.gz

When you find the time, please have a look to this changes.

Now how should this go to the repo ? Should I start to send merge
requests to fgdata ? Martin ?

Cheers, Yves

saying they are not useful in an emergency, but as they are not official

Of course it would be nice to have them in the scenery with white X-marks

NOTAM has usually a time of validity, so permanent/long term changes
usually end up as an AIP supplement which have a longer lifespan.

Closed runways have a big white X on both ends of the runway (I guess if it
is closed both ways? ;))

One more thought: Should completely closed airports be part of apt.dat at
all? They are no longer a part of the air transport system. There is no
guarantee at all that they are suitable for landing or takeoff. Sure they
are marked in some charts as they might be useful in an emergency, but
essentially they are not much different from a large parking lot or a wide
road.

I think the difference between CI and CP is too subtle to matter to us. If
we only have a binary value then we should think O = 1, 'not O' = 0 where
'not O' = CI or CP.

If we can have a ternary value then O = nil or undefined, CI = 0 and CP = 1
Works for me anyway.

And I'd like to request again that we gunzip apt.dat in fgdata. Especially if
we're going to start making changes to it.

Re: [Flightgear-devel] apt.dat update (lowercase names etc.)

2011-12-09 Thread Tuomas Kuosmanen
Wouldn't it be useful to somehow flag the airport as
closed/restricted/whatever in the data, so that nav displays and gps/fms
units could show a different airfield symbol if desired for closed
airports? Does the data format support this?

FG could say (closed) in the end also based on the flag, if that were
possible, so the name field wouldnt need to contain the information.

Hi Yves,

All looks like a good idea ;=))

I guess the only thing is concerning 'closed'
airports. Should they be in apt.dat at all?

But if they are retained for 'historic', or
other purposes, it would be good if they were
all consistent...

- It seems there are already some 16 with [X],
but most are with a space after this, except
  UHP1 [X]Lenino
The others are all like
  3R3 [X] Austin Executive Airport
  XBEL [X] Bellows AFB
  ... etc ...

- But 2 just have the word 'closed', no [X]
  EIGM Gormanston (closed)
  YLUT Laverton (Military - Closed)

- One with both
KAUX [X] CLOSED Robert Mueller Municipal

- One with just X, no square braces, and closed
  VHXX X CLOSED Kai Tak

As stated, would be nice if they were all
similarly 'marked', if retained...

Just my 2 cents ;=))

Regards,
Geoff.

Just because an airport is 'closed' does not mean the runways no longer
exist... The Gimli Glider incident comes to mind.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_Glider.

Even if the runways are removed and built over, often outlines are visible
from the air for years after the airport is removed. See
http://www.airfields-freeman.com/ for some examples.
