FLUXLIST: I'm all fluxed up now
Why the flux can't we just fluxing get along?! David, Enid, J*** and I, we're all happily fluxing whenever we fluxing feel like it -- what the flux ever happened to just fluxing being kind to one another? I fluxed up once; I don't want to do it again. I just want to fluxing make art, and whatever the flux those fluxers want to call it, it doesn't fluxing matter to me. It's just fluxing stuff, man! Cheerio! xoMElissa Melissa McCarthy Hours: whimsical or by appointment Adult, maybe; grown-up, never! http://www.bonafideart.com
RE: FLUXLIST: Dear David
Dear David, Thanks a lot. You went and got Enid involved, and now everything's gone to pot. I'm sorry I ever said yes to you in the refrigerator box, and I checked -- nothing I did or said in third grade counted, SO THERE! I have moved on; I have grown up. I am now involved with J*** in a washing machine crate, and we are deliriously happy. I hope that you find whatever joy and beauty you can, without me. FLUXLIST: Physical stuff
Carol, I was so taken by your post; spent the night in my studio, surrounded by the clutter and stuff of work and no work, possibility and despair of use. I think you're right; there is a certain satisfaction in seeing the collected physical *stuff* of years of art/work -- created stuff, stuff with potential, stuff that reminds us not to do *that* again, stuff that waits patiently for that is exactly what I needed! And then there is the mental and emotional clutter to address...right now that seems like a more daunting task than cleaning the studio! But sometimes they go hand in hand, the mental clutter drives the art, and then you have more stuff. I envy the zen, but live more in the wreck room. Has anyone on the list ever done anything wildly destructive and/or cathartic with old work, then used the remains to create something new? (I'm thinking of an art bonfire in a metal trashcan in my own case, an idea I've toyed with for a while, and this may be the year) Or have you done that and had instant regret? FLUXLIST: Party in LA
Got this notice in another e-mail, and kind of wishing I was nearby, and that it wasn't the Easter Vigil, and that I could go -- but maybe some others are and can go...ME Kipper Kid Brian Routh Hits L.A. Again with His Two-Fisted Video Works at Dangerous Curve, the New Downtown Experimental Exhibition and Performance Art Space Join the Community Opening Celebration Party! - If you haven't yet experienced one of the very hip community parties at Dangerous Curve, Downtown Los Angeles's new experimental art space, then come to the opening celebration of video installations by Brian Routh (AKA Harry Kipper of the performance-art duo Kipper Kids) on April 10, 2004. More and more people are starting to hear about what a blast Dangerous Curve is. As usual, the party runs from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m., at 1020 Fourth Place, between Molino and Mateo Streets, in the back of the 500 Molino Street Lofts (#102). Yet again, there will be fantastic (and healthy!) food by our amazing chef John Saslow, performance art by TBA, and relaxing chair massages by Life Balance Day Spa. This time, the live music is provided by the over-the-top dark wave band Death by Dolls (featuring Dame Darcy, recently from Boston), plus the experimental sounds of Billy, Billy and Son, and downtownhost. There's no charge, and there's plenty of close, free parking. The exhibit runs until May 1, closing with a Performance Art and Experimental Music Night starting at 8:00 p.m. (See below.) The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday, 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. See dangerouscurve.org for directions, events, pictures, and updates. Brian Routh gained international fame in the 1970's as one of the Harrys in the Kipper Kids, along with a fellow student (at East 15 Acting School in Essex, England) Martin von Haselburg (who's now married to Bette Midler). They took Artaud's Theatre of Cruelty to heart, but drawing their own blood in their vaudevillian boxing rituals caused them to be relegated to performance art by theater purists, despite their theatrical costumes. In fact, Routh has collaborated with performance artists such as Herman Nitsch, Karen Finley, Eric Bogosian, Ann Magnusen, and Annie Sprinkle, but believes the term performance art has become perjorative, insofar as it's (unfortunately) come to mean bad theater. He's remained steadfastly at the forefront of experimental theater, preferring improvisation over scripting, humor over shock value. He's also been a dedicated teacher, even in the face of misunderstanding students who try to one-up him in self-destructive ways. Routh brings the same intensity to his video works as he does to his performance art. He plays with distorting the image to both a hilarious and disturbing effect, turning himself into a Big Nose, or a Wise Man, or a Blowfish Man staring into a Ski Nose. Sometimes he's jabbering nonsensically as in the Kipper Kids, sometimes he's giving you an over-the-top New Age lecture, sometimes a dizzying policital rant to the tune of what sound like incessant toy instruments. Fancy video wipes that would look idiotic in the hands of almost any other look tongue-in-cheek sublime in Routh's. When he adds props, they are decidedly screwy, jacking up the overall over-the-top nature of things, so that you feel as if you've been sucked into the ultimate rabbit hole and will never get out. Nor do you want to. Dangerous Curve is committed to supporting visionary established and emerging artists of all ages, by emphasizing one-person shows of risky, intelligent work that is not necessarily commercially viable nor currently popular. In a time when other spaces have reduced their performance-art programming, Dangerous Curve is also a new venue for performance artists, with performance-exhibits, monthly performance-art events, and an annual end-of-summer performance-art festival planned. FLUXLIST: Pleasant surprise
I was recently in Chicago and was able to see the Artist Stamps exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art (I think it was the last day of the show). One of the works was by the late, great PK Harris, aka Princess Petal. I am a proud owner of some of her original stamps, and remember with laughter our meeting a few years ago -- anyone for a glass of wine? http://www.geocities.com/fluxlist/fluxlistmeeting.html?999375877530 Cheers! FLUXLIST: Party Music
For anyone living in Maine, Southern New Hampshire or the Boston area, tomorrow night (sorry for the short notice!) there's a show opening in Rollinsford NH, near Dover on the Maine border called Love, Lust and Lasciviousness for Valentine's Day. There will be a DJ at the opening from 7 til about 9, then I'm playing with some other musicians at a post-opening party on the 5th floor of the Salmon Falls Studios (the converted Damart Mill factory building). Since it's tomorrow, if you'd like more information, call my cell phone at 603-455-8008 -- leave a msg. if I don't answer and I'll call you back. FLUXLIST: Flummoxed over Fluxbox
Crispin -- or Don -- I'm a little confused (and those who know me, know this is nothing either new or surprising). Are we to send you our 1 prototype contribution in a box meeting the dimensions you set out, or do we just send it however and you'll provide a box, or we send a box later? I had an idea -- and went to bed with a three-day headache because of it, thank you very much! What if all the Box II contributions were mailed to participants in the large plastic bags that were mentioned, thus keeping postage down, and each recipient created his/her own container. That way cigar-box afficionados could use a cigar box, while those who favored paint cans could do that, and anyone who had an alternative could use it as well. A pre-printed label could be included with each set of contents BTW, the candy box arrived the other day, delighting! Thank you! Re: FLUXLIST: Re: FLUXLIST BOX #2
Crispin, I like the idea of either the plastic zip-loc storage bags, which someone suggested, or cigar boxes -- with those, people could conceivably send their submissions in a box, which you would refill with a complete collaborative and send back -- or send to someone else, with each participant getting a different box back. We'd have to set minimum dimensions (lxwxd) so that nothing was too big. The only problem w/ that would be creating additional boxes, but it's not an insurmountable problem -- I could contribute a couple of extra cigar boxes Meanwhile I'd be happy to work a trade with you for a tin -- can I interest you in a slug tag and other assorted things? FLUXLIST: Boxing Daze
Crispin, personally I'm very fond of cigar boxes (as was someone else on the list -- Meryl? Kathy?). I think the altoid-size containers might be a little limiting for this project, but I'd be interested in acquiring some for another project. Could we work something out perhaps? Please e-mail me off-list, but at [EMAIL PROTECTED] (hotmail is doing strange things to people it doesn't recognize who send me mail). Weren't cigar boxes rather widely used historically for fluxus games boxes? I seem to recall quite a few at the exhibit at Mass MoCA last year Ciao! For those who have questions about my slug tags: They are objects, not a game (though if someone could come up with an idea for Slug Tag, I'd offer to be It first). I just got a little carried away with an idea and a hand-carved rubber stamp, and wanted to share. So, a self-addressed stamped envelope (best), stamp and mailing address (OK) or mail-exchanged something (OK,too) will get you, as promised, a personalized slug tag -- and if I find anything else that might be fun to send, I'll pass it along too. FLUXLIST: Ethnic confusion
Today in my local Ames department store (a generic sort of discount establishment) I saw a vending machine for Mijos -- which seem to be Hispanic Homies. And me without 2 quarters!!! The nearby grocery store had a Homies unit, but it was out of order on the day I saw it. I live in New Hampshire, in a hugely non-diverse small city, so I was a little surprised to see these wonderful little dudes and dudettes here -- and I too wonder if I should be apalled or delighted. Either way, I'm planning on starting my collection ASAP. If anyone is Homie or Mijo deprived, I'll be happy to help. Now I'm curious if there will be little Canucks, or White Trashies or Vaguely Western Euro-lings to collect and trade? And Mr. Bowman, for those of us who are somewhat electronically challenged (no scanner), may we send a Blue-Haired You portrait via the time-honored tradition of snail (or air) mail? FLUXLIST: Titles/no Titles
From Audrey Flack's _Art and Soul_: The title affects the work. If a painting is titled during the early configuration of it, the sense and meaning of the title become part of the painting. Some titles just appear; they seem to be woven into the structure of the composition. Others are elusive and only emerge through struggle, battle, or debate. Some works never get a name; others get two. BTW to Tom Holmes: If the bark-like covers of your book have text collaged on the inside, and an F on the front and B on the back they're mine; it's actually cardboard from the Big Dig in Boston -- come from a 4'X8' original piece. *I've* got a name! Re: FLUXLIST: address book
Found the Fluxlist Address Book in my mail yesterday-- DBChirot's covers. Carol, you did a wonderful job, and thank you for organising everything! I would suggest that if there are any corrections or additions, they be posted to the list, perhaps? BTW, a Random Bit of Niceness occurred when I was at the post office: I had a notice of postage due (11 cents) on a card. I didn't have the money with me, and told the clerk I could drop it off the next day. *Two* people in line said -- Oh, I have it! and one of them put the change on the counter and voila! I got my letter. Post office practical magic. Re: FLUXLIST: Fifty/Forty Nine
I would think that it would be easier on the Project Ruler if everyone sends 50 multiples, standard size (US 8 1/2 x 11?) to be collated, bound and distributed. I'd be glad to contribute something like that. Isn't that sort of how we did the Fluxlist Box -- everyone sent x number of completed objets for inclusion? Re: FLUXLIST: Fifty/Forty Nine
Kathy, simple bindings are something I do well -- just string, or rubber bands or something. If everyone contributed 50 pages each and they were collated, I'd be willing to bind them for/with you. And there's a possibility that everyone participating could include the postage for the return of the Finished Book/Project -- SASE's mean you can create return mail art Let me know, and if there's any other idears out there Melissa McCarthy Hours: whimsical or by appointment Adult, maybe; grown-up, never! OK, so I finally got enough time in front of my computer that I was able to go through and tally the long-lost Fluxlist Cooks recipes -- some going back an embarassing three years! But here's the skinny, so to speak: Recipes from: Neal Johnson Josh Ronsen Adam Villani Allen Bukoff (2) Ryan Smith (2) Brad Brace (2) Sol Nte (3) Ceyda Karamursel (2) The Fluxsisters Infoslut2000 Ffunction Alan Bowman (4) Pez and Narvis Rod Stasick The late, great PK Harris Roger Stevens (2) Primate Marc Schulz and Christina Ohlhus Don Boyd They are all in their original e-mail format, most addressed to Fluxlist. Now what? I also have 2 images that A. Bowman sent as cover possibilities, but I think I only have them in hard copy...and not very good at that.
