ADMIN Announcing Framers on Mailman!

2005-11-21 Thread Lisa Bronson
Hi Hedley,

The archives that will be ready in a week or two are not the Mailman
archives, but a custom solution being put together by one of my
technical people. These archives will be searchable. I will let you
know when they are ready.

Warm regards,
Lisa B.

Yes, folks, the archives are grouped by month. No way to see a continuous

Sure hope the frameusers list is going to be a lot more usable than the

Hi Ellen,

The wording of the form is unfortunate (I will see if I can do
something about it), but if you read the whole sentence that starts
with "To unsubscribe..." you'll see that it's where you want to log
in.

Enjoy the holiday,

Adding insult to injustice

2005-11-21 Thread carpe...@genco.com

I feel your pain, Bill, although I am not a Mac user. I don't want to
learn a new tool and convert my documents. So I will use Frame until it is
absolutely impossible to continue (hopefully, after I retire), despite
whether Adobe still supports it, as long as my OS can still run it.

Still, the only effects I can envision, should FrameMaker die, are that we
will get no more enhancements/upgrades and replacement CDs, this discussion
group might disappear so we would get no more advice, and I would be forced
to move to XML, a move that my brain has not yet been able to accomplish.
I won't bother to buy another high-end package unless I can't find another
writer who can use XML when I retire.

So keep your CDs safe and print out all the FrameUsers advice that you need
to keep. And have a happy holiday season. I intend to overeat for a month
and think about it later. : )

No, Bill, you're just being objective, rational, and realistic. In other

Hi John,

If you create a List of References, that will give you the file names of
all your imported graphics, in order. Maybe that would help?

In Frame 6 (I don't have 7), this is Special > List of > References...

In Set up dialog, select Imported Graphics.

When I select Object Properties on a referenced image on my home PC,
FrameMaker freezes.

I am using FrameMaker 7.1.116, pretty plain vanilla version except it has
IXGen. It is set to Structured, but I am not actually using any structure
tools or methods.

This is the same book that I work on at my office in Lexington with no
problems at all. That machine has Schlomo's timesavers on it, and it too
has IXGen.

This has happened at home for about three weeks or four weeks. I don't
know of any significant changes in that time.

I am trying to rebrand a finished book with all new screenshots. I have
done this a hundred times and it is easy - look at the image to be
replaced, get a new screenshot and save it as the same name, and continue.
But to do it I need to know the name of the image I am replacing, and i do
that by getting the Object Properties. I know there are other ways, but
this way is very fast and efficientuntil now!

Any ideas?

Oh, no pain here (though my arm may be stiff later from the flu shot I
just got...)

I'll use FM for as long as it's necessary for me to do so. We're
moving to structured authoring (still doing some unstructured work)
and will hopefully be moving to XML i/o in the future. Once that
happens, FM is just a spiffy content editor, like Epic and the like.
My goal is to be tool independent... I think it'd be very cool to
allow writers to use whatever tool they feel most comfortable with
provided that it works with XML and sticks to the schema. :-)

XML seems intimidating but it's actually quite logical. If you can
nail down use of unstructured FM templates, you can nail down XML. As
for user groups and lists, I suspect they'll be around for some time
to come, and should they go dodo, build your list of contacts now so
you're prepared. :-)

No idea why your PC freezes (other than that it's running Windoze...;),
but an alternate solution for your immediate task would be to create a

If you had a password before, it has been changed. You may request it
in two different ways:

* Send an email to framers-request at lists.frameusers.com. Leave the
subject line blank and put password on the first line of the body of
the message.

* Visit http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/listinfo/framers. Near the
bottom of the page is a field with a Unsubscribe or Edit Options
button. Enter your email address and click the button. On the next
page, click the Email My Password To Me button. Using the password you
receive, log in, and if you wish, change your password to something
you can easily remember.

If you have any other questions or difficulty with these instructions,
please let me know.

I'd also add:
* best practices (like no overrides and importing by reference)
* single-sourcing (variables, conditional text, output formats)
* structure (which I don't use yet, so no specific ideas)

I like the idea of categories related to using the tool
in general, in addition to ones like Karen's that relate
to particular aspects of template use and creation.

Paula,
Just create a superscript with those two characters. If you want to
export them to XML as an entity reference, put them in a variable.
