RE: Pasting a link to excel 2007

2007-06-13 Thread Paul Grigg
Using FrameMaker 6.0

Just something we've noticed: if, in FM, you Edit paste special paste
link to a table in an excel 2003, the table appears in FrameMaker, but when
the file is printed, either to a physical printer or to distiller, the table
turns into a black stub. Anyone else noticed this, or have a solution?

Thanks, Paul.

Don't paste, import. Select File Import Object. In the Insert Object
dialog, check Create from File, and browse to your Excel file. Check
Link and click OK.

One caveat: FM 6 obviously preceded Excel 2007, so you'll probably have
to save the Excel file in an earlier format (97/2003 or maybe 5/95)
before you do this.

Frame to pdf bookmark problem

2007-06-13 Thread Mark Southee
I've started to get a strange problem when printing to pdf from some
newly created files.

I've got a Chapter Title paragraph style - Chapter:TitleBook, and a
Heading one style - Head:1Book
I have the pdf settings so the Head:1Book tags are indented once from
the Chapter:TitleBook.

However the pdf bookmarks always come out with the Head:1Book headings
above the Chapter:TitleBook heading.

Am on Frame 7.2p158 on WinXP Pro and Acrobat 7 (it's also the same for
Acrobat 8)

When I create a Frame TOC, this has everything in the right order.

I've got other books/files which convert fine with the identical set up.
Any ideas what I could have done wrong?

No, but you can redefine one of the system variables. For instance, if

OT: Indexing

2007-06-13 Thread Ann Zdunczyk
Hi all,

I know some of you guys do indexing a lot. I have been asked to quote doing
an index in Pagemaker (sorry). There are 1300 terms that are to be listed in
the index. In Pagemaker, as in Framemaker, I would need to add an index
entry for each instance of the term in a 300 page book. I have no idea how
may entries will need to be entered.

Does anyone have any idea the best way to quote something like this.

RE: system variables inside a user variable?

2007-06-13 Thread Ridder, Fred
As others have noted, it is not possible to use system variables
within user variables, nor is it possible to define additional new
system variables. But I have to say that I really don’t see that
what you are trying to do provides that much utility. Globally
updating a regular user variable that contains the year across
all files in a book takes only a few minutes, even for a large
book, and you only need to change the value once a year.
A manual solution works fine for me in this situation.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

No, but this sounds like a very poor way to index. What you describe sounds
like a concordance index, which is usually next to useless. A big part of the
skill of indexing is to know what to index and what to leave out.

I usually reckon on about 150 pp per day for a general index for a textbook in
FrameMaker, but this is a crude measure as it depends very much on the number
of indexes (general, authors, specific, etc) the number of words to be included
in the index, and the tools you use to support indexing. I am afraid that I
have no experience of PageMaker.

You should be able to find guidance on quotation from the relevant US or UK
societies. Try at:

The most common cause of the behavior you describe is when

Fred, it doesn't seem as straight forward as that. It only seems to
affect the first file in the book structure. I created 2 identical files

the top of the book structure, the problem as I described occurred, but
only for that file. Subsequent files where unaffected.
