Some questions about reference pages, index specifications and font size
Hi Framers: I have generated several independent indexes. However the page number font size is not constant for the same level. Thus I will have for example: Cape 1657-1750 54 1680-1730 36 The page number 36 is oversize (actually it is the paragraph number). I seem to think that the answer must lie in the reference pages, but the ref page headed Index Specifications is only one of three which appears to control the size of the font in the index. I have been importing formats. Have I inadvertently overloaded the index specifications? I am becoming dizzy trying to find out where I m going wrong.. Thanks Rob Robert C.-H. Slightly OT: Style checker?
Hi, I have used John Smart's MaxIt. The company works with your organization to build your dictionaries. You then can add to those dictionaries. It took a little getting use to, but I thought it was a very useful tool. I'm not sure about checking for a specific style guides. MaxIt has it's own set of rules and I don't remember if that was one of the options for editing how the software worked. I know that they now have a version that is MaxIt light. Less money and not all that much hand holding. With the whole package they come in an train the users on the product and work with you to develop your terminology. John is a transplanted Aussie with a great sense of humor. His product was developed out of the aerospace business. Even though I don't have MaxIt at my current job, I still use the skills developed with MaxIt. HTH Beth Tripp It looks like MAXit Checker (via same URL) would be the comparable product for unstructured FM...? Correct? Has anyone used MAXit? Re: Some questions about reference pages, index specifications and font size
ps! I forgot to suggest that the most likely specification that's in use is on the Reference page named Index. However, without knowing the complete setup of your book, I may be overlooking something. I also forgot to include this test procedure, which is an alternate approach to isolating the cause: I seem to think that the answer must lie in the reference pages, but the ref page headed Index Specifications is only one of three which appears to control the size of the font in the index. * Before starting this test, make a backup set of the files, then from the Book window, in your test set, use Shift+File - Save All Files in Book, and then use File Save Book. * Manually remove the same two of the three index specifications from all the files in the book, then regenerate. (The reason for removing manually is that the import process doesn't remove objects (master page layouts, formats, reference pages, etc.) that are missing in the source of the import, so removing two index specifications from a source file and importing that into other files won't remove a specification.) * Regenerate the book and note the result. * If all is OK, you're done. From within any file in except the Book window, use Shift+File Save All Open Files (make sure there are no open non-book files that you don't want to save in their current state.) * If the result is NOT OK, from within any non-book file use Shift+File Close All Open files (answer No to save changes), then reopen the book, and from within the book, use Shift+File Open All Files in Book . Then, repeat the test with a different single specification in place. (NOTE: Open All Files in Book opens the files in minimize size.) Re: Some questions about reference pages, index specifications and font size
Hi, Rob: I know a lot about FrameMaker, but I tremble when trying to engage with statistics in any specific way. I am quite comfortable with sweeping generalities and fuzzy logic. Rather than treat your number differences as problems, I'd take the statistical approach of determining what factor affects what what result. So, here's a suggestion that you might find useful: identify the source(s) of your result(s), then change as needed. * Begin with a clean before example. Save a copy for safety. * Create and apply a uniquly-colored character format in the specification for each index; each should have all properties set to As Is, except for color. * Regenerate the indexes, reimport as before, and you'll see which specification is responsible for which page size. * Change settings and regenerate until you've achieved the desired result. Unless I'm overlooking something, there's no need to document how many trials it takes to identify and resolve each instance, not to correlate how many cups of coffee become necessary to maintain the clarity of the experimenterG. SOS - CORRUPT FILES
Hello Framers, recently I had a machine with a bunch of FM files being backed up in progress - crash! It crashed so bad that about half of all of my FM files went corrupt and I can't open them anymore. Is there any means to fix them or recover or whatever. The files appear all fine - I can open them with notepad, etc. but not FrameMaker. They have correct size too.Thoughts?Michael _ With Windows Live Hotmail, you can personalize your inbox with your favorite color. www.windowslive-hotmail.com/learnmore/personalize.html?locale=en-us=TXT_TAGLM_HMWL_reten_addcolor_0607

Dear Mr. Davidson: Please accept my sympathy, and also my thanks for taking the time to inform us during this exceptionally difficult time for you. In 1995 the Framers List lost another frequent contributor, Carol Odlum, to brain cancer. Carol had been particularly helpful to me with a number of issues. No doubt there have been many others over the years whose disappearance from the list was due to an untimely death from cancer. My own wife is a breast cancer survivor. Since her surgery in 1994, there have been a number of scares, but they all proved to be false alarms. Your message reminds me of how fortunate I am, and of how much I share the sentiments of your epitaph. We have several customers where removing supernumerary fonts from their systems actually solved the text drop out problem. Perhaps this font removal forced the system to refresh FNTCACHE.dat -- which seem quite likely given the number of fonts we removed, 500+ (that said, I urge all Framemaker users to remember that fonts to remove must be selected in meticulous detail to avoid deleting vital system fonts.) - Jacob
