It's Here - the Brand New Adobe FrameMaker for Mac OS X Petition Web Site

2006-03-07 Thread Paul Findon

Dear Supporter,

Apple introduced its first Intel-based Macs in January and intends to
transition the entire range from PowerPC to Intel by the end of the
year. This is significant for Mac FrameMaker users because the new
Intel Macs don't support the Classic environment and cannot run
FrameMaker. To mark this critical phase in our campaign, I've set up a
new domain for the FrameMaker for Mac OS X Web site (fm4osx.org),
totally redesigned the site, and added PDF form letters to make writing
to Adobe and Apple really easy. Please take a look at the new site and
write to Adobe and Apple today.

http://www.fm4osx.org/

Apparently, after putting all of its efforts into Acrobat and Creative
Suite for the last few years, Adobe has reevaluated its portfolio and
is reinvesting in FrameMaker. The first evidence of this was the
September release of FrameMaker 7.2 for Windows and Solaris. Adobe has
also said that if the market for Mac FrameMaker changes and there's an
opportunity, it will respond. In other words, if enough people let
Adobe know that they want FrameMaker for Mac OS X, they'll make it.

If you haven't already written to Adobe, I urge you to do so now. Even
if you have already written, please write again. The new PDF form
letters on the Web site mean that it will only take a few minutes of
your time. I've also provided address labels.

Apple is still using Classic (Mac OS 9) and FrameMaker 6.0 to produce
its own user guides and I know that its technical writers want
FrameMaker for Mac OS X just as much as we do. Even Adobe is still
using it.

If you've not yet signed the petition, please do so now. If you've
already signed, please don't sign again, as it diminishes the petition
and I have to manually remove duplicates. I understand your
frustration, but writing to Adobe would be more constructive.

http://www.petitiononline.com/fmforosx/petition.html

If you're not already a member, please join the FrameMaker for Mac OS X
mailing list to keep up to date with the campaign's progress and
discuss Mac FrameMaker-related issues.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fmforosx/

The current petition count is 3,245 signatures.

Please forward this message to all concerned.

Thank you for your support!

Paul Findon

First, don't misinterpret me. I think a good case can be made for:

(a) numbering frontmatter separately with Roman numerals, and then
numbering the rest of the document with Arabic numerals, starting at the
first page of chap. 1 with page #1.

(b) numbering frontmatter separately with Roman numerals, and then
folio-numbering (chapter-page) the rest of the document, starting at the
first page of chap. 1 with page #1-1.

(c) numbering the entire document continuously with Arabic numerals,
starting wherever you choose to start (title page, inside cover, ...)
with no separately numbered frontmatter section.

What I object to is (d) numbering the entire document continuously, but
changing the numbering format so as to _obscure_ that fact -- thus
making scheme (c), which would work just fine, into something confusing
and user-unfriendly.

There is no good reason to _fool_ people into thinking the book uses
numbering scheme (a) when it doesn't. Period.

Second, you may hesitate to call something worse, but you can't repeal
logic and reason. If one of two alternatives is in fact _better_, then
the other is in fact _worse_. That's how comparisons work.

Sorry, I have no use for this politically correct bovine fertilizer.

Polish in FrameMaker

2006-03-07 Thread Yves Barbion
Hello Framers,

here we go again with the old FrameMaker does not support Unicode story.

A customer of mine has FrameMaker files which already contain Polish text.
He has now received some new Polish text in Word which he has to copy and
paste in the FrameMaker files. The known problem is that the characters are
okay in Word (because Word supports Unicode), but the special (Polish)
characters become question marks when you paste the text in FrameMaker.

The maker.ini file has been customized and Arial CE has been activated using
WGL Assistant.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Best regards

RE: Polish in FrameMaker

2006-03-07 Thread Phil Heron
Yves,

I've tried this out on my system. Here's what I did to copy Polish text
from Word to FrameMaker:

1. I defined a FrameMaker paragraph format to use the Arial CE font.
2. I typed some text using Polish characters in a Word document.
3. I selected the text in Word and used Ctrl+C to copy it to the
clipboard.
4. In FrameMaker, I put the insertion point into the paragraph formatted
with the Arial CE font.
5. I chose Paste Special from the Frame Edit menu and selected RTF as
the paste format.

Bingo - the Polish characters displayed as expected.

You could move RTF to the beginning of the ClipboardFormatsPriorities
line in maker.ini. This will allow you to use regular Paste to put the
Polish text in.

I can also switch to the Polish keyboard and type Polish text directly
into Frame.
I didn't need to customise maker.ini or use WGL Assistant to activate
Arial CE.

My environment:
Windows XP Professional (UK English default locale)
Word XP
FrameMaker 7.2 (144)
Acrobat 6 Professional

Figure numbering

1. Figure 1,2,3
2. Figure 1-1, 1-2, ...2-1, 2-2
3. Figure 1-1...3-10...5-30

Currently, the book I am updating does #3. It stops counting at figure
325 and then starts at 1 again. I want to do number 2, so I want the
Figure numbering to start over at the beginning of each chapter. How do
I do this?

If you guys know of a better method, tell me what you do.

PDFs of these individual graphics, created from Illustrator, do not
have problems with Acrobat prefight, so it seems to be some sort of FM
conversion problem.

Why does this happen, and is there any way to prevent this on the FM
side? If there is no way to fix this, we'd have to tell our illustrator
to make the lines in the graphics slightly thicker.

Windows XP, Illustrator 10, FM 7.1, Acrobat 6.

By the way, is there no way to check the whole list archives any more? I
thought I'd search the archives first, but the one I found at the
frameusers site was just for the recent few months.

I don't know about the archives, but you can find lots of hits from
many relevant lists with Google searches that include the problem or

2006-03-07 Thread Yosuke Ichikawa
Thank you for the tip, Peter.

We tried .ai, but it was the same; and since we have a lot of graphics,
we don't want to be saving them in .pdf.

I'm still curious why this happens, but for the practical matter at hand,
we decided to use 0.21 pts for minimum line width in our graphics.

Even Adobe is still
using it.

If you've not yet signed the petition, please do so now. If you've
already signed, please don't sign again, as it diminishes the petition
and I have to manually remove duplicates. I understand your
frustration, but writing to Adobe would be more constructive.

If you're not already a member, please join the FrameMaker for Mac OS X
mailing list to keep up to date with the campaign's progress and
discuss Mac FrameMaker-related issues.

The current petition count is 3,245 signatures.

Please forward this message to all concerned.

Thank you for your support!

wish to receive mail about this issue, let me know and I'll remove your

Period.

Second, you may "hesitate to call" something worse, but you can't repeal
logic and reason. If one of two alternatives is in fact _better_, then
the other is in fact _worse_. That's how comparisons work.

Sorry, I have no use for this "politically correct" bovine fertilizer.
Not all ideas are equally valid, and not all answers are equally
correct. When you pretend that they are, you're not doing those with
dumb ideas and wrong answers any favors.

In Windows XP you must have full rights (near-administrator rights) to
be able to install fonts -- same as for installing most software.

Polish in FrameMaker

here we go again with the old "FrameMaker does not support Unicode" story.

okay in Word (because Word supports Unicode), but the special (Polish)
characters become question marks when you paste the text in FrameMaker.

The maker.ini file has been customized and Arial CE has been activated using
WGL Assistant.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Polish in FrameMaker

"Learning Korean: Martial Arts Terminology"

2006-03-07 Thread Scott Abel
Just a quick email to the list to say if you have an interest in Korean
or martial arts language learning, you might check out the latest
project from Adobe FrameMaker guru Kay Ethier. Kay was unable to locate
Korean language learning materials for her children who were enrolled
in Tang Soo Do classes. Frustrated, Kay hired some Korean martial arts
and language learning experts, cranked up Adobe FrameMaker and went to
work creating her first product, "Learning Korean: Martial Arts
Terminology".

Available here: www.aboveandbeyondlearning.com

This is truly an example of practicing what you preach! Kay was able to
produce a multi-lingual, multi-media product (a CD and book) from a
single source -- using Adobe FrameMaker as the both the authoring tool
and publishing engine.

Kudos to Kay! I'm sure there are many other parents out there looking
for quality language learning materials. Now they have Above and Beyond
Learning to help them.

I don't think the problem has anything to do with the graphic. It sounds
like you are using the "A" tool to "print text" over the graphic. That
tool does not permit use of paragraph tags. If you want to use pgf tags,
insert a text frame.

2006-03-07 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Gillian:

There's likely no text frame on the body page. The text is probably
created with the Text Line tool, the "A" tool in the graphics tools
palette.

You can select this hybrid text/graphics object by:

* Dragging a selection marquee around it; take care not to drag
background graphics and objects.

* Ctrl+Click on it to select it.

You can select the text by:

* Click an insertion point in it and drag

* Double or triple click in it

Read more about Text Lines in FM online help.

Your options are:

* Format this text directly or by creating a character format and
applying it to the text

* Create a text frame with the text frame tool ("mini page icon") in
the graphics tools palette

* Double click inside the frame and type to create paragraph-based text.

* Select the frame with Ctrl+Click, and drag a side or corner to
adjust the size and position of the text frame

* Apply a paragraph format to each paragraph in the text frame.

table sort order

2006-03-07 Thread Carol J. Elkins
Framers, in the past when I sorted table rows containing numerical data, I
could put up with Frame sorting on specific digits rather than the entire
number string. For example, in an ascending sort, Frame does this:
509
5104
5105
5115
512
5120

However, I'm now working with a 41-page table containing hundreds of these
document numbers. I need them to sort correctly without post-production
fixing because I'll be resorting on a regular basis.

Does anyone know of a fix for this?
Rick, is there a script that would work?
Is there a 3rd party add-on available?

OT: RSI, Carpal Tunnel solution

2006-03-07 Thread Stuart Rogers
I thought I should share my recent solution to an incipient wrist problem...

I had not ever had problems with repetitive strain or carpal tunnel
injuries until December of last year, when I did quite a bit of work on
other people's computers in poor ergonomic positions. I ended up with an
aching forearm, aggravated every time I reached for the mouse.

Co-incidentally, I'd been doing more illustration in my work, and knew
that I really needed a graphics tablet to be effective in that. I did
some research, and purchased a 6x8 Wacom Intuos3 tablet. I've used it
for a couple of months now, and it is FABULOUS -- not just for
illustrating, but for all the things I used to use a mouse for. I highly
recommend it to anyone who is having RSI problems with a mouse. You hold
the pen tool just like you would hold a ballpoint pen, and your wrist
and hand stay perfectly relaxed and comfortable.

In fact, I liked it so much, I bought a 4x5 Wacom Graphire tablet for
home. (Graphire is the less featured, less expensive model.) That turned
out to be a mistake: it's not nearly as easy to use, the pen is not as
comfortable, and the pad is much less sensitive. If you are considering
a tablet, go for the Intuos; it's well worth the extra money.

(No commercial interest in Wacom, just love my tablet!)

best regards,

To fix this manually, you may insert an invisible/non-printing leading
zeroe/s as necessary in front of the shorter numeric strings.
To make insertion easier, create a "NoPrint" character format (where the
color is set to an invisible one), then create a variable named "0", which
has: 0

table sort order

2006-03-07 Thread Bernard Aschwanden
Using this approach you could even export to text and then import the file by
reference. That way each update to the XLS results in updated output and FM
automagically shows you the most current numbers.

I've done that with a few financial clients and things seem to be working well
with it.

table sort order

2006-03-07 Thread Carol J. Elkins
Good idea, Shlomo. I didn't mention, however, that each of these numbers is
a cross-reference to an actual document. Therefore, I can't edit the number
manually unless I open each of the 624 files and change the variable that
defines that file's document number.

But your idea is so spiffy (especially the part about creating a variable
named "0") that I'm going to use it on a different project, so thanks!

table sort order

2006-03-07 Thread Carol J. Elkins
Sorry, Ann, to keep my question simple, I didn't mention that each number
is preceded by an alpha character. The numbers really look like this:

M-509
M-509
M-5104
M-5105
M-5115
M-512
M-5120

That sends a different message to Frame, signalling an alpha sort instead
of a numeric sort.

Sorry for the confusion.

Is the prefix the same for all the numbers? (Or limited to a manageable
few?) Then maybe you could strip it off all the numbers and make it the
autonumber for the pgf tag you use.

Error installing FM 7.1p116

2006-03-07 Thread Art Campbell
I've played with the setting a bit because one version of the bug was related to
the default setting of 600 dpi. Haven't tried 300 exactly though, no.
499, 450, 400 ...
450 was actually working for a while, until the last automatic Acrobat upgrade.

I'll give 300 a shot when I have a few minutes though.

Thanks,
Art

Figure numbering

2006-03-07 Thread Gillian Flato
How do you guys do figure numbering?

1. Figure 1,2,3
2. Figure 1-1, 1-2, ...2-1, 2-2
3. Figure 1-1...3-10...5-30

Currently, the book I am updating does #3. It stops counting at figure
325 and then starts at 1 again. I want to do number 2, so I want the
Figure numbering to start over at the beginning of each chapter. How do
I do this?

If you guys know of a better method, tell me what you do.

Thanks,

Figure numbering

2006-03-07 Thread Joe Malin
I do option 1, although I have used option 2 in the past. I don't
particularly like option 3.

You can do option 2 quite easily. Assuming unstructured FM, you develop
a paragraph format for figure titles. The autonumber pattern is

F:Figure <$chapnum>-.\sm

Once you have that set, ensure that Format > Document > Numbering
Paragraph tab is set to restart paragraph numbering with each chapter.

importing a word table to a frame table

2006-03-07 Thread Gillian Flato
Thanks to everyone who responded to my figure numbering question.

Now on to more fun things

An engineer gave me a 200 row 4 column table in a Word doc that needs to
be added to a Frame table in a Frame doc. How can I do this without
having to cut and paste each cell, or buy a piece of software which will
take months to get approved, time which I don't have?

Thanks in advance,

I don't know if there's a tool dedicated to fixing this in FM, but
you might try saving the Illustrator graphics as PDF or .ai, and
importing them into FM, to see if there's a difference. Success here
might indicate that the problem is in the EPS file.

I don't know about the archives, but you can find lots of hits from
many relevant lists with Google searches that include the problem or
message and FrameMaker.

importing a word table to a frame table

2006-03-07 Thread Jeremy H. Griffith

1. Select the rows you want to add in Word, Copy (ctrl-C).

2. In Frame, Paste Special as text right *after* the table
want to add them to. You'll get one para per row, with a
tab in between cells, which will look awful in Frame. But...

3. Select the material you just pasted, and Table | Convert
from text. In the dialog, indicate a tab is the column
delimiter, and specify the table format used for the one you
want to add it to. You now have a set of table rows.

4. Cut the table rows, click in the first cell of the row
before or after where you want them, and Paste. All done.

You might try this out with a few rows first, but then you
should be able to do the whole thing in one swell foop. ;-)

HTH!
