RE: TrackChanges and Multiple Undo

2006-12-13 Thread David Creamer
A year or two ago I installed TrackChanges on FrameMaker 7.0p579.
Afterward FrameMaker began crashing when I edited text. Never
had done so previously. I eventually figured out that
deleting words with Ctrl-Delete was causing the FrameMaker
failures. After fruitless troubleshooting and research,
including a note to this list, I happened to remove
 TrackChanges. No crashes since then.

One or two years ago is a long time for software (well... except for major
FrameMaker upgrades!). Control-Delete is not crashing Frame 7.2 now, using
the beta 1.9 version.

There is no fix and it is still unstable. It caused my Frame 7.0 to
crash multiple times. I called the company. They have no intention of
fixing it since everyone is upgrading to 7.2 and getting multiple undo
 from Adobe.

Multi-Undo is a separate product from Track Changes, but it appears you are
referring to both products. (Perhaps you purchased a bundle?)
Could it be that problem was with Multi-Undo and *not* Track Changes?

===
Yes, this is doable if you appropriately define a
running header/footer variable to contain the
applicable attribute value(s). For instance, if you
define three attributes in the subject element to have
three attributes identifying the chapter (chapnbr),
section (sectnbr) and subject number (subjnbr), you
would define an available running header-footer
variable as follows:

$attribute[chapnbr:Subject] -
$attribute[sectnbr:Subject] -
$attribute[subjnbr:Subject]

Alternatively, if you were to use a single attribute
to define all three numbers (e.g, 2-3-5) in the
Subject element, the definition of the running footer
variable would be simplified as follows:

$attribute subjnbr:Subject]

Note that you must follow the attribute name with a
colon (:) followed by the name of the applicable
element in which the attribute is contained.

If there are two or more Subject elements on a page,
the attribute(s) in the first element is used. If
there are no Subject elements on the current page,
Framemaker will use the attribute values in the last
Subject element on a preceding page.

Unlocking Pgf Locked

2006-12-13 Thread Fred Staal
Every now and then I get stuck with one of those auto-generated
paragraphs that appears after a text inset that refuses to cooperate
with being retagged for the subsequent paragraph and can't even be
deleted. As a last resort, I recently converted a file with this
problem to a .mif and in Notepad found the offending paragraph, which
included the following notation: Pgf Locked. When I deleted this line,
and then opened the file in FM, the paragraph tag could be deleted.
Is there a keyboard shortcut in Framemaker for unlocking a paragraph
with this problem? (FM6, XP, etc.)

It doesn't really matter which way you go, provided you set your document up
to suit what you need to achieve. Other issues aside of course.

<$chapnum$> operates on the file when it is linked through a book file. That
is, the numbering is allocated by the book file when it is updated.

I think you have two options:
1. Split your document up into individual files and link them through a book.
This has certain other advantages, such as determining whether the new chapter
starts on the left or right, page numbering format, etc.
2. Use <$paranum> instead of <$chapnum> and create a style for the chapters.
You can call it chapterNumber or some such.

Shouldn't be a problem if you use mif2go. But there are other alternatives
such as exporting to Word from a PDF.

I have tried this - http://www.solidpdf.com/ - and it seems to work ok. But

Yes!!! We are still here.

May all spammers die a hideous death. It seems our ISP has been having
mail server problems because of them. (Sheer volumes of this junk has
overwhelmed one of the oldest and most reliable ISPs in our area.)

You can also try our direct ISP address of franks at pacifier.com.

Calling is fine too, but just discovered that our answering system is not
working properly, and I'm scrambling to find another solution there, too.
Sigh.

Isn't technology wonderful? (When it works.)

Apologies to anyone who has tried to reach us without success, though some
messages have been getting through.

Can an Element be a Container and a System Variable

Yes, this is doable if you appropriately define a
running header/footer variable to contain the
applicable attribute value(s). For instance, if you
define three attributes in the subject element to have
three attributes identifying the chapter (chapnbr),
section (sectnbr) and subject number (subjnbr), you
would define an available running header-footer
variable as follows:

<$attribute[chapnbr:Subject] -
<$attribute[sectnbr:Subject]> -
<$attribute[subjnbr:Subject]>

Alternatively, if you were to use a single attribute
to define all three numbers (e.g, 2-3-5) in the
Subject element, the definition of the running footer
variable would be simplified as follows:

<$attribute

Note that you must follow the attribute name with a
colon (:) followed by the name of the applicable
element in which the attribute is contained.

If there are two or more Subject elements on a page,
the attribute(s) in the first element is used. If
there are no Subject elements on the current page,
Framemaker will use the attribute values in the last
Subject element on a preceding page.

DTD graphic tool?

2006-12-13 Thread Art Campbell
Has anyone run across a tool that can represent, graphically, the
nesting of levels of elements and sub-elements within a DTD file? It
doesn't need to provide editing capability, although that would be
nice -- I'm looking more for a nice graphic.

Thanks,
Art

DTD graphic tool?

2006-12-13 Thread Art Campbell
Actually, I downloaded that just before I posted...
Is there a switch or display option to get it to display the DTD in
nested format? It's displaying as a flat file on my system, but I have
only played with the program for 20 minutes or so...

Thanks,
Art

DTD graphic tool?

2006-12-13 Thread Art Campbell
Thanks for the pointer, Kay!
I downloaded and tried 4 other editors this afternoon, but this one is
the one that creates the graphic I wanted. ;- )

Cheers,
Art

Unlocking "Pgf Locked"

2006-12-13 Thread Fred Staal
Every now and then I get stuck with one of those auto-generated
paragraphs that appears after a text inset that refuses to cooperate
with being retagged for the subsequent paragraph and can't even be
deleted. As a last resort, I recently converted a file with this
problem to a .mif and in Notepad found the offending paragraph, which
included the following notation: "Pgf Locked." When I deleted this line,
and then opened the file in FM, the paragraph tag could be deleted.
Is there a keyboard shortcut in Framemaker for unlocking a paragraph
with this problem? (FM6, XP, etc.)
