.book Files inside a Book

2008-08-29 Thread Jennifer Randel
Hi everybody,
I have a feeling that the answer I'm going to get to the following question is,
Are you crazy? You can't do that! But, here goes anyway...

I have documented programs on a menu. This menu is quite extensive and contains
multiple submenus, each with their own programs. Right now my book contains a
separate file for each program on the main menu. Each submenu already has its
own book. I'd like to be able to plug those .book files into the main menu book
and generate a PDF. I can plug the book files in, but they are ignored by FM
when I update the book.

Is there is a way to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance,

Problem Importing Visio 2007 Drawing into Frame 7.2

2008-08-29 Thread Tarlochan S. Nahal
Dear Framers,

I am having difficulty saving a Frame 7.2 (unstructured) document after
importing a Visio 2007 drawing into Frame.

If I get rid of the drawing and use .jpg or some other graphic format, the
problem goes away, but I want to be a able to import the original Visio drawing
in .vsd format and be able to edit by double-clicking on it and update the
source file at the same time by using the link feature. (It does not work even
without linking). I have been doing it for a long time, but I have never seen
this problem before.

I am using Import Object Create from File  and then use the browse button
to get the file.

The file gets imported, but it cannot be saved. Any other changes to the
documents after importing it cannot be saved either.

Here is the error message:

An internal error occurred while writing importing graphic in this document.
The file has been saved, but has lost some image data. Please report this error
to Adobe Technical Support.

The file simply cannot be saved as long as the subject Visio drawing is in the
document. It. You have to delete the imported file or choose No to Save
before you can close the document.

I have renamed the Frame as well as Visio file. It makes no difference.

Can someone tell me what is causing it and how to solve it? Any help in that
matter would be greatly appreciated.

Not in Frame, no.

However, you can generate all the books as PDFs and then merge the
PDFs (and include a cover/master page with bookmarks to the books), or
create a meta-book of all the files, and create Section or Part pages
for each of the component books.

FM--MIF round-tripping

2008-08-29 Thread Adam Schweitzer
Is converting between .fm and .mif file formats considered to be safe
(ie. no data lost in translation)? My understanding is that they should
be - and indeed, I did not notice any glaring differences when I open a
.fm and it's corrosponding .mif in Framemaker.

However, when I attempted the following experiment:
1) Open .fm file, save as .mif
2) Open .mif from 1), save as .fm (with different name)
3) Open .fm from 2), save as .mif.
4) Compare .mif files created in 1) and 3) using a text diff tool.

I found that there were a number of differences, some of which are
probably safe to ignore (like XRefLastUpdate elements), but some are
more concerning (TabStop and PgfNumTabs elements missing in the
latter file, PgfPDFStructureLevel elements having different values..)

Goal:
In the process of converting several documents from paper to framemaker
documents, a large number of (rather randomly placed) discretionary
hyphen characters were inserted (probably by the OCR software). I
cannot seem to select these characters for use with the find/replace
tool in Framemaker, so my idea was to convert to .mif, remove all
instances of Char DiscHyphen, and then save back as FM. This appears
to be successful, subject to my concerns above.

So, I'm wondering.. is it safe to round-trip between .fm and .mif files?
And if not, is there an alternate way of accomplishing my task of
removing these extra characters?

Thanks,
Adam Schweitzer

I'm not sure what you're doing, but if empty pages aren't being deleted
when you save or print, it's usually because you've told FM not to. :-)

In the file with the persistent empty pages, select Format Page Layout
Pagination. In the dialog box, Before Saving Printing is probably
set to Don't Change Page Count. Pick something else (what depends on
whether your doc is single or double sided and which side the next
chapter should start on).

The other possibility is that the empty pages are using custom master
pages. FM will only delete empty pages based on the default Left and
Right master pages.

If it's neither of those, then I'm not sure what's going on.

Searching for the escape code "\-" (a backslash followed by a hyphen

Hi, Adam:

Regarding the use of MIF and the spurious stuff in your MIF-to-FM conversions:

* You can open a MIF file for editing in FM by pressing Shift while
clicking Open, and choosing Treat Each Line As a Paragraph.

* The proper way to save a MIF file for conversion back to FM is to
save it as Text Only with a MIF extension.

FM<-->MIF round-tripping

2008-08-29 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Adam,

Yes, converting back and forth between FM binary and MIF is considered safe.
There are a couple of exceptions that I can think of:

1) If you save a FM document as MIF and then use an earlier version of
FrameMaker to open the MIF document, you will lose "features" that are not
supported in the earlier version of FrameMaker.

2) If you save a structured document as MIF and attempt to open it with
unstructured FM, you would lose the original document's structure. However,
you should get a warning about this when you open the document.

As far as the task at hand, you could use FrameScript for this and not have
to bother with the FM to MIF to FM step at all. Send me a sample document
offlist and I will see what is involved with writing a script. Thanks.
