Shortcut for "Repeat last"?

2011-02-02 Thread Helen Borrie
Using FM 8 unstructured - is there any shortcut (equivalent to Ctrl-Y in Word)
whereby one can repeat the last tagging instruction?

For example, I'm working on merging at lot of documents from various sources
that I import into a templated document with all paras in Body format. I'd
like to be able to go through and tag all the Head 1 first, then all the Head
2...and so on.

Thanks,
Helen

Re: Formatting of multi-marker indexes...

2011-02-02 Thread Scott Prentice

Hi Richard...

Thanks for the very detailed explanation. I should have provided a bit
more info on this. I do understand how indexes are formatted and
generated, but what I was hoping for was that there was some way to
assign unique IX reference flows to each marker type and in some way
have this assign different LevelIX para tags .. I assumed this wasn't
possible, and it sounds like this is the case. I was hoping to avoid
manually assigning character formatting to each entry.

Frank's semi-automated approach to adding the character formatting is
interesting, but it would be great if this could be done based on marker
type to reference page mapping.

If you create an index from multiple marker types, is there a way to
apply different formatting to the resulting entries from each marker
type? Like, is there a way to assign one reference page to be the
formatting for the "Index" markers and another reference page to be the
formatting for the "OtherIndex" markers?

I'm thinking the answer is no .. but wanted to check with y'all.

It's not clear what you want to format. But in any case, you don't assign reference pages to anything. If you create an index, a text box containing the IX flow is created on a reference page (which by default is also named IX). The contents of the IX flow specify how the index is generated, ordered, and formatted.

The IndexIX paragraph, which typically contains "<$pagenum>," tells FM to include page-number references to markers of type Index. You can include another marker type in your index by creating a pgf like IndexIX, but named after the second marker type, e.g., OtherIndexIX. It can be formatted differently -- for instance, you could make it bold or italic -- but that formatting will be applied only to the page number.

The Level1IX, Level2IX, etc., pgf formats are used for the index entries at those levels. So every 1st-level index entry will have the same pgf format, whether it's from an Index marker or an OtherIndex marker.

If you want the text for an OtherIndex entry formatted differently, the solution is simple. But you have to do it in the marker text when you create the OtherIndex marker. You can include character formats, enclosed in angle brackets, in the marker text. For instance, let's say you have a char format named Other that formats the text the way you want the OtherIndex entries to look. To create an entry for "configuration," put this in the marker text:

configuration

These things, and a lot more that you can do, are reasonably well explained in the help/manual under "Tables of Contents and Indexes."

FM9 developer manual

2011-02-02 Thread Garry Wilson
Hi Frame experts
I am looking for the best technical manual for developing application in
structured FM9 to purchase. Something that details all the bits that Adobe seem
to have included, but never document in product documentation.

Hope you can help.

When you save as EPS, there should be a dialogue that lets you specify a
preview. This is what FrameMaker uses to display the EPS. Note, however,
that it is a low-res preview, not the full resolution image that FM will
display.

Have you tried using PDF as the metafile format? I've had excellent results
using PDF as opposed to AI or EPS (admittedly starting with Illustrator rather
than your tool...)

Plus, importing EPS into Framemaker generates only a gray box. I need to add
callouts and other textual information, so not seeing the artwork on the page
isn't an option.

As a further FWIW, the customization document that was distributed with
FrameMaker 8.0 was *exactly* the same as the one provided with FM 7.0. Even the
cover page calls out "FrameMaker 7.0".

But maybe FM 9 did away with the command configuration files altogether? It
seems like that would have been a lot of work for little positive gain, and it
would have blown backwards compatibility out of the water (not that this has
never happened...).

Bookmarks

Steve, it does. Our beef is with having to set those bookmark properties afresh
for every new book. Before, I had the Expanded Through Level - All as the
default. For years, I'd never had to think about it again.

Clint, that should not happen. Are you setting this at the book level and then
saving the book after printing?

Others, the Bookmarks Expanded Through Level list on the right side of the
Bookmarks tab page should control how bookmarks expand by default in Reader.

Bookmarks Expanded Through Level - All - Always

2011-02-02 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
I don't think FM is controlling what that dialog is showing - it's just
reflecting what the joboptions file has in it. I thought there was some trick
to saving it off and restoring it, but I forget.

That's what I'm talking about, Jeff, but the command is under
Format-Documents-PDF Setup in FM 9. I'm just wondering where the default
for that Frame dialogue can be changed.

TIA,

your Acrobat joboptions file, from what I can recall.

Where can I change the FM 9 settings so that my bookmarks are expanded
by default, all the time, rather than each time I work on a new book?

Shortcut for "Repeat last"?

2011-02-02 Thread Pinkham, Jim
Well, there is still this collection of files, so it looks like the
business continues:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker9\fminit\configui\mathcmds.cfg
C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker9\fminit\configui\sample.cfg

As a further FWIW, the customization document that was distributed with
FrameMaker 8.0 was *exactly* the same as the one provided with FM 7.0.
Even the cover page calls out "FrameMaker 7.0".

But maybe FM 9 did away with the command configuration files altogether?
It seems like that would have been a lot of work for little positive
gain, and it would have blown backwards compatibility out of the water
(not that this has never happened...).

Re: Formatting of multi-marker indexes...

2011-02-02 Thread Scott Prentice
Hmm .. after re-reading Richard's post, I saw something that I had
missed before. The "IndexIX" and "OtherIndexIX" para formatting that is
applied to the page numbers only. This may actually be good enough to be
able to flag the page numbers with alternate formatting based on the
marker type. It doesn't apply formatting to the whole entry, but this
could do the trick.

Again .. thanks Richard, for the very detailed reply to my question!

...scott

Scott Prentice wrote:

Hi Richard...

Thanks for the very detailed explanation. I should have provided a bit
more info on this. I do understand how indexes are formatted and
generated, but what I was hoping for was that there was some way to
assign unique IX reference flows to each marker type and in some way
have this assign different LevelIX para tags .. I assumed this
wasn't possible, and it sounds like this is the case. I was hoping to
avoid manually assigning character formatting to each entry.

Frank's semi-automated approach to adding the character formatting is
interesting, but it would be great if this could be done based on
marker type to reference page mapping.

Cheers,

Combs, Richard wrote:

If you create an index from multiple marker types, is there a way to
apply different formatting to the resulting entries from each marker
type? Like, is there a way to assign one reference page to be the
formatting for the "Index" markers and another reference page to be the
formatting for the "OtherIndex" markers?

I'm thinking the answer is no .. but wanted to check with y'all.

It's not clear what you want to format. But in any case, you don't
assign reference pages to anything. If you create an index, a text
box containing the IX flow is created on a reference page (which by
default is also named IX). The contents of the IX flow specify how
the index is generated, ordered, and formatted.
The IndexIX paragraph, which typically contains "<$pagenum>," tells
FM to include page-number references to markers of type Index. You
can include another marker type in your index by creating a pgf like
IndexIX, but named after the second marker type, e.g., OtherIndexIX.
It can be formatted differently -- for instance, you could make it
bold or italic -- but that formatting will be applied only to the
page number.
The Level1IX, Level2IX, etc., pgf formats are used for the index
entries at those levels. So every 1st-level index entry will have the
same pgf format, whether it's from an Index marker or an OtherIndex
marker.
If you want the text for an OtherIndex entry formatted differently,
the solution is simple. But you have to do it in the marker text when
you create the OtherIndex marker. You can include character formats,
enclosed in angle brackets, in the marker text. For instance, let's
say you have a char format named Other that formats the text the way
you want the OtherIndex entries to look. To create an entry for
"configuration," put this in the marker text:

configuration

These things, and a lot more that you can do, are reasonably well
explained in the help/manual under "Tables of Contents and Indexes."

HTH!

Have you tried using PDF as the metafile format? I've had excellent results

Bookmarks Expanded Through Level - All - Always

Are you talking about the bookmarks in a PDF created from FM? That's your

Hello again, learned and wise ones

Where can I change the FM 9 settings so that my bookmarks are expanded
by default, all the time, rather than each time I work on a new book?

Thanks,
Jim

Shortcut for "Repeat last"?

2011-02-02 Thread Fred Ridder

And if it really bothers you to have to press three keys to do either of the
"repeat" operations that Stuart mentions, you can customize your UI to map
those commands to shorter keystroke sequences. You do this either by modifying
the existing FrameMaker cmds.cfg file or creating a customui.cfg file that
contains just your customizations (much easier to maintain). Any given command
can have multiple key sequences to invoke it, so the best bet is to define an
alternative sequence (which can be a single key in the case of the F keys)
rather than change the standard defined key sequence.

All of this is described in a file called Customizing_Frame_Products.pdf, which
you should find in the Documents directory of the FrameMaker installation. Just
search for the phrase "adding shortcuts for a command" to find the specifics
and then read the preceding few pages to learn the basic concepts of how to
modify the configuration files.

I have a document, in which I have the same reference to a footnote in three
different places. Can this be done? How?

Using structured Frame 9 on XP.

"imorting EPS into FrameMaker generate only a gray box" because you're
creating an EPS without a TIF preview.

Segueing from "I often get these with AI formatted files" to "not

help with your issue. The more/better information you give up front
the better answers you'll get.

RE: thin black line on some images

2011-02-02 Thread Gray, Steven (EPS)

Well, now...let's see. First, I'm not starting from AI. Rather, it's an
Interleaf-Quicksilver file, and exporting to EPS just isn't a happy experience.
Using the AI format seems to provide the cleanest overall experience for both
raster and vector graphics (or a mix of both). Plus, importing EPS into
Framemaker generates only a gray box. I need to add callouts and other textual
information, so not seeing the artwork on the page isn't an option.

to map those commands to shorter keystroke sequences. You do this either
by modifying the existing FrameMaker cmds.cfg file or creating a
customui.cfg file that contains just your customizations (much easier to
maintain). Any given command can have multiple key sequences to invoke
it, so the best bet is to define an alternative sequence (which can be a
single key in the case of the F keys) rather than change the standard
defined key sequence.

All of this is described in a file called
Customizing_Frame_Products.pdf, which you should find in the Documents
directory of the FrameMaker installation. Just search for the phrase
"adding shortcuts for a command" to find the specifics and then read the
preceding few pages to learn the basic concepts of how to modify the
configuration files.

Bookmarks Expanded Through Level - All - Always

2011-02-02 Thread Pinkham, Jim
That's what I'm talking about, Jeff, but the command is under
Format-Documents-PDF Setup in FM 9. I'm just wondering where the default
for that Frame dialogue can be changed.

TIA,

Are you talking about the bookmarks in a PDF created from FM? That's
your Acrobat joboptions file, from what I can recall.

Hello again, learned and wise ones

Where can I change the FM 9 settings so that my bookmarks are expanded
by default, all the time, rather than each time I work on a new book?

Thanks,

As a further FWIW, the customization document that was distributed with
FrameMaker 8.0 was *exactly* the same as the one provided with FM 7.0. Even the
cover page calls out "FrameMaker 7.0".

But maybe FM 9 did away with the command configuration files altogether? It
seems like that would have been a lot of work for little positive gain, and it
would have blown backwards compatibility out of the water (not that this has
never happened...).

Formatting of multi-marker indexes...

RE: Shortcut for "Repeat last"?

2011-02-02 Thread Pinkham, Jim
Well, there is still this collection of files, so it looks like the
business continues:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker9\fminit\configui\cmds.cfg
C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker9\fminit\configui\mathcmds.cfg
C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker9\fminit\configui\sample.cfg
C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker9\fminit\configui\wincmds.cfg

As a further FWIW, the customization document that was distributed with
FrameMaker 8.0 was *exactly* the same as the one provided with FM 7.0.
Even the cover page calls out "FrameMaker 7.0".

But maybe FM 9 did away with the command configuration files altogether?
It seems like that would have been a lot of work for little positive
gain, and it would have blown backwards compatibility out of the water
(not that this has never happened...).

RE: Bookmarks

2011-02-02 Thread Owen, Clint
I always print multiple chapters into one PDF from the book file. I always save
all files before I close, leaving the book file for last. The next time I print
the same document, I end up setting all of the bookmark properties again.

Clint, that should not happen. Are you setting this at the book level and then
saving the book after printing?

Others, the Bookmarks Expanded Through Level list on the right side of the
Bookmarks tab page should control how bookmarks expand by default in Reader.

Formatting of multi-marker indexes...

Cheers,

...scott

Bookmarks Expanded Through Level - All - Always

2011-02-02 Thread Pinkham, Jim
Hello again, learned and wise ones

Where can I change the FM 9 settings so that my bookmarks are expanded
by default, all the time, rather than each time I work on a new book?

Thanks,
Jim

Shortcut for "Repeat last"?

2011-02-02 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
Yes, me too - however I found that tweaking my maker.ini file to paste text
(unformatted) solved the issue of having to save the Word doc to text & then
copy/paste). The other "downside" to FM10's F6 function is that unlike Word, it
will still pop confirmation dialogs rather than just repeating the last command
& response. So you still end up clicking or hitting enter to confirm what you
want to do (I notice this most when dealing with rows in tables).

It's almost worth the upgrade cost just for that feature.

The one thing I've hated in the switch to FM9 (from Word) was that there was no
F4 (repeat last) equivalent. It's particularly frustrating whenever I move
another Word doc to Frame (I never import, I always save the DOC to text and
reformat from scratch in FM - there are too many issues in large Word docs for
me to trust a straight import. I'd much rather *know* I've started with a clean
slate).

One keystroke beats three any day.

I don't think FM is controlling what that dialog is showing - it's just
reflecting what the joboptions file has in it. I thought there was some trick
to saving it off and restoring it, but I forget.

RE: Shortcut for "Repeat last"?

the adobe.com ether.

And if it really bothers you to have to press three keys to do either of
the "repeat" operations that Stuart mentions, you can customize your UI
to map those commands to shorter keystroke sequences.

The Customizing_ Frame_Products.pdf has instructions for creating your
own shortcuts. You can assign your own function keys, etc. I'm not sure
the file is included with the latest FM versions, though. Microtype's
ToolbarPlus Express plugin also add shortcuts that many find useful:

FWIW, in FM 9, at least, the Documents directory consists of:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker9\Documents\Character_Sets.pdf
C:\Program

C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker9\Documents\Getting_Started_Guide.pdf

RE: Shortcut for "Repeat last"?

Bookmarks Expanded Through Level - All - Always

2011-02-02 Thread Pinkham, Jim
Hello again, learned and wise ones

Where can I change the FM 9 settings so that my bookmarks are expanded
by default, all the time, rather than each time I work on a new book?

Thanks,

The Customizing_ Frame_Products.pdf has instructions for creating your
own shortcuts. You can assign your own function keys, etc. I'm not sure
the file is included with the latest FM versions, though. Microtype's
ToolbarPlus Express plugin also add shortcuts that many find useful:

Thanks for the thoughts on that, although in this instance, it's not what I
want to do. I actually *want* the source documents to come into the template
without structure as they are from multiple sources with multiple ad hoc
structures. The template they are coming into is "structured unstructured" if
you get my drift. Although the content is for a monolithic book, I have
designed the template to be able to convert the content to unstructured and
round-trip it in future.

This project started as a structured DITA project and has wriggled its way back
to unstructured once I lost the fight to find a way to do it structured and get
the right output. With hindsight, I lost a lot (too much!) time by trying to
make this book my first major DITA project. Doesn't mean I have abandoned
DITA/structured FM, by any means, just that it really does not work for this
monolithic book! I'm more than a year past deadline now. :-(

So much for "I say". I hope you won't mind if I post back your further
comments to the list, as I think they are worth sharing

RE: Shortcut for "Repeat last"?

2011-02-02 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
Yes, me too - however I found that tweaking my maker.ini file to paste text
(unformatted) solved the issue of having to save the Word doc to text & then
copy/paste). The other "downside" to FM10's F6 function is that unlike Word, it
will still pop confirmation dialogs rather than just repeating the last command
& response. So you still end up clicking or hitting enter to confirm what you
want to do (I notice this most when dealing with rows in tables).

I'd much rather *know* I've started with a clean
slate).

"imorting EPS into FrameMaker generate only a gray box" because you're
creating an EPS without a TIF preview.

Segueing from "I often get these with AI formatted files" to "not

help with your issue. The more/better information you give up front
the better answers you'll get.

their clients had been asking for a series of unique "indices" for years and

Using structured Frame 9 on XP.

Thanks,

Re: Formatting of multi-marker indexes...

2011-02-02 Thread Jerilynne "MamaRed" Knight
A plug for Frank's IXGen (pleased user)I wish I had purchased it LONG
before I did because it cut development time for a variety of reference
documents by over 75%. Plus I had a client that was jumping for joy because
their clients had been asking for a series of unique "indices" for years and
the combination of Frame and IXGen was just what the doctor ordered.

2011-02-02 Thread Herbert Leusink
Hi Brian,

Yes, this can be done. You can create a crossreference to the footnote and
format that like the footnote reference.

Thanks,
Helen

Yes. Add a cross-reference to the footnote with the crossreference
format: <$paranumonly>.
