Re: Ventura encoded text files

2012-04-24 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi David

Ah, good old Ventura Publisher! Those were the days. We have used Maker
Markup Language (MML) for this type of conversion jobs. We just opened the
VP text files in Notepad++ or EditPad Lite and replaced the VP markup (@REF
=) with maker markup (ref). Then, we simply imported the MML files into
our FrameMaker templates.

You can find a MML reference guide here:

http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FrameMaker/8.0/mml_reference.pdf

Cheers

Helping FM find graphics files

2012-04-24 Thread Menahem Rosen
Framers,

I received translated .fm files (book file + several chapters) from my
translation company. When I plunk them into my FM folder and try opening them,
FM flags every referenced graphic file as missing, because the path got messed
up at the translation company. (It's almost but not just right-my graphics
folder is subordinate to the FM folder, while the translation company put the
graphics folder on the same level as the FM folder.) Is there an easy way to
re-map the references throughout the files. I just can't do each one manually!

TIA

Wouldn't it be easier to move the graphics folder? In any case, all you
need to do is find the first graphic and make sure use new path for all
graphics (may not be exact wording) is selected.

At the book level, highlight all of the chapter files and press Enter (opens
all files). Frame will ask to reconcile the first missing graphic and
remember this as it opens the other chapters. At least this has worked for me
with Frame 7.2, as long as all of the graphics are in the same folder.

Re: Disappearing Palettes

Thanks, Stuart, now I remember Workspaces--and even a fairly recent
discussion about the .fws and .cfws files--but couldn't put them
together. I will set this up and hope I don't have to use it often.

Typically, running Windows under Parallels is no different, it's just
more challenging for us Mac folks to figure out where stuff is (and
why it doesn't work like a Mac).

The best way to restore your palettes is to set up the interface the way
you like it and then save it as a custom workspace. Then when things go
haywire (or you've just managed to move everything around for various
reasons), you can choose Reset from the workspace menu and everything
will be restored. (Assuming the .cfws file is OK.)

(The .fws and .cfws files are in the WorkSpaces folder within fminit;
you may find more than one instance of the fminit folder; I'm not sure
how Parallels, Macs, etc. work this out.)

Lise's advice should work. Peter's advice to move the graphics folder
to where FM's looking for it also should work.

Of note, your LSP should not be altering your project like this in any
way. Make sure they know not to do this again going forward, as it
adds unnecessary additional work. You're paying them good money for a
job done right.

Version: FM9 (9.0p237)
Unstructured
OS: XP Pro with SP3

I received a set of Spanish files back from my LSP today and as I was making
some adjustments within the files (I do the final format tweaking as DTP
charges are outrageous) it became obvious that they had completely screwed up
my graphics - which I import by reference. As the LSP is in Europe I am hoping
there is a simple batch method to change the relative path for my all graphics
rather than have to re-link by hand or wait for a set of corrected files.

The path is only out by one level.

The FM files sit directly above my Graphics (Linked) directory (which is
further categorized by Chapters, Appendices, etc.). However, there is now
another directory above Graphics (Linked) entitled FM

...\FM\Graphics (Linked)...

instead of

...\Graphics (Linked)\...

Is there a simple way I can get rid of the FM in the relative path (I don't
have FrameScript) or am I screwed and need to wait for updated files from my
LSP?

Alison

FYI: This isn't a mistake the LSP normally makes. I have no idea what they were
playing at but I'll be having words with them!

Re: Disappearing Palettes

2012-04-24 Thread Robert Lauriston
I've had similar problems with FM10. Sometimes the problem is that
objects are appearing behind other objects (usually a document window,
sometimes another pod) instead of coming to the front. Try resizing
the document window or moving it around to see if there are things
hiding behind it.

Eventually I gave up on using floating windows and pods due to the many bugs.

Is there any way to work with these files? Third-party program suggestions

Let me know if you find any. In my recent experience with two rather
large books that I did in Venture 4.1 some 20 years ago, there is no way
to automatically import these files into FM (I am on v. 8). The way I
did it eventually, was by copying the Ventura text files (in WordPerfect
5.2) and pasting them into FM as text, codes and all. Then, manually
searching and replacing the codes as necessary. Yes, a time consuming
procedure, but a bit faster and safer than scanning the existing books
with OCR and producing text files that are importable into FM. That
procedure, which I also did for some chapters of a book that the Ventura
files for it were too corrupted to be of any use, is more time consuming
because of the spell checking that must be done before and after scanning.

Re: Ventura encoded text files

2012-04-24 Thread Lynn Gold
When I had to do this I used Maker Markup Language. I ran a few Emacs
macros over the file and it converted easily. One of the things to watch
out for is VP and FM use colons and semicolons in Index markers the
opposite way, so when replacing strings you have to make an intermediary
step of replacing one of those to some random text string not likely to
appear in your book. To wit:

1. Replace : with murgatroyd.
2. Replace ; with :.
3. Replace murgatroyd wtih ;.

The client has Frame 6; I have Frame 8-10 on my system, but can install 7
on
an older system.
I know early versions of Frame has a Ventura import feature, but I don't
know if it will work with these files.

Is there any way to work with these files? Third-party program suggestions
are welcome too.

My only other thought is some GREP Find/Change work.

Thank you in advance,

So how did you supply all these widely-scattered graphics files to the

Didn't the translation vendor localize the graphics?

It seems to me that for each translation language, you should be getting back a
mirror image of your source-language folder structure.

I just re-read your original post. When you said regarding the FM files that I
plunk them into my FM folder, you didn't mean into the same folder holding
your source-language FM files, did you?

There should be a separate set of files and folders for each language, all with
the same directory structure. The translation vendor shouldn't change the
directory structure for the localized files -- but if it does, it must update
the graphic file references. In that case, nothing is broken as long as you get
back the entire structure, including the referenced graphics directories, not
just the FM files.

Ventura encoded text files

2012-04-24 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi David

Ah, good old Ventura Publisher! Those were the days. We have used Maker
Markup Language (MML) for this type of conversion jobs. We just opened the
VP text files in Notepad++ or EditPad Lite and replaced the VP markup (@REF

our FrameMaker templates.

You can find a MML reference guide here:

At the book level, highlight all of the chapter files and press Enter (opens

Lise's advice should work. Peter's advice to move the graphics folder
to where FM's looking for it also should work.

Of note, your LSP should not be altering your project like this in any
way. Make sure they know not to do this again going forward, as it
adds unnecessary additional work. You're paying them good money for a
job done right.

Color libraries gone?

Just getting things up to speed on a new PC and find that FM has lost
its colour libraries. In View > Color > Definitions, clicking the arrow

Tried a reinstall, but no go.

Anybody had this problem and found a fix?

Version: FM9 (9.0p237)
Unstructured
OS: XP Pro with SP3

I received a set of Spanish files back from my LSP today and as I was making
some adjustments within the files (I do the final format tweaking as DTP
charges are outrageous) it became obvious that they had completely screwed up
my graphics - which I import by reference. As the LSP is in Europe I am hoping
there is a simple batch method to change the relative path for my all graphics
rather than have to re-link by hand or wait for a set of corrected files.

The path is only out by one level.

The FM files sit directly above my "Graphics (Linked)" directory (which is
further categorized by Chapters, Appendices, etc.). However, there is now
another directory above "Graphics (Linked)" entitled "FM"

...\FM\Graphics (Linked)...

instead of

...\Graphics (Linked)\...

Is there a simple way I can get rid of the "FM" in the relative path (I don't
have FrameScript) or am I screwed and need to wait for updated files from my
LSP?

FYI: This isn't a mistake the LSP normally makes. I have no idea what they were
playing at but I'll be having words with them!

Helping FM find graphics files

2012-04-24 Thread Menahem Rosen
Ah, I neglected to mention that the graphics are organized (i.e., scattered)
throughout a myriad of subfolders, depending on the products' modules, models,
and conditions. So, I can't just do one or move the giant graphics folder
structure.

Thanks for trying to help!

Menahem

Sounds like Rick's $95 solution is the way you should go, if it's
going to be that much effort.

Definitely have a talk with your translation vendor if it's caused
this much rework.

Why can't you kick this back to the translation vendor to fix at no charge?
They broke it. Seems they should fix it. I assume your contract states
something like you get files back in a useable condition? These are not
usable.

So how did you supply all these widely-scattered graphics files to the
translation vendor? To avoid breakage, they'd have to replicate your folder
structure.

Ok, so here's a thought--can you make a copy of your whole original set of
files and graphic folders (untranslated), then delete the fm files in
there, and copy and paste in the translated fm files? Would they then be
looking for the graphics in the right place?

Didn't the translation vendor localize the graphics?

It seems to me that for each translation language, you should be getting back a
mirror image of your source-language folder structure.

I just re-read your original post. When you said regarding the FM files that "I
plunk them into my FM folder," you didn't mean into the same folder holding
your source-language FM files, did you?

There should be a separate set of files and folders for each language, all with
the same directory structure. The translation vendor shouldn't change the
directory structure for the localized files -- but if it does, it must update
the graphic file references. In that case, nothing is broken as long as you get
back the entire structure, including the referenced graphics directories, not
just the FM files.

In that case, the translation agency screwed up. They should fix the
incorrect paths at no additional cost to your company.
