Re: More bad news on TCS4: no longer includes Photoshop
Somebody here reported a bug in printing to .ps. I gave up on printing to anything other than Adobe PDF because I'd constantly forget to change the printer back and end up with errors in generating PDF. Definitely saves me time in the long run never to print directly. How about Adobe enhancing Save As PDF so you could set it to always use a selected printer definition instead of the current printer? I don't expect that to happen given that from FM8 on close to zero of the feature enhancements have improved the experience of everyday, experienced unstructured-mode users. Re: Localization Process with FrameMaker 10
Hi Alison, We plan to hire a professional translator. If you have recommendations for that, please let me know. And thanks for the workflow. I may end up using something like that. One thing I noticed is that you are not using TT edits to identify what things have changed and need to be translated. Instead, you are assuming that the translator has appropriate software to flag that in the source FM files. That would be ideal obviously, if I didn't have to be personally burden with tracking every single thing that has changed and requires translation. Thanks, Joe On Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 3:56 PM, Alison Craig alison.cr...@ultrasonix.comwrote: Joseph: ** ** **1. **When you talk about the “translator” do you mean a professional at an LSP (Language Service Provider) or someone in-house who speaks/writes Chinese, so you use him/her? Following that logic, anyone who speaks/writes English, can be an English technical writer – and we all know *that* isn’t true. **2. **This is my process for an initial translation. Professional translation services usually take the .fm files and run them through their translation memory software so that the translators know what has changed. The limited utility and additional overhead of a house-developed kludge might well end up making it more expensive than hiring professionals who have the right tools for the job or, if you do a lot of translation in-house, buying translation memory software. ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Re: Response from Adobe - Print to .PS issue - Cause and solution
Hello Kapil Although your workaround and fix will no doubt be highly appreciated by unstructured users, they don't address the issue that we have seen with FM 11 /structured /- that is, that printing a file to the Adobe PDF printer (whether using Save As, Save as PDF, or Print) takes 10 times as long as it used to. I am not exaggerating. We have a 550-page structured book that we used to convert to PDF in FM9 in about 10 minutes or less. Now with FM11 it takes 90 minutes or more. I originally posted this issue on the Adobe forums - see http://forums.adobe.com/message/4661181#4661181. But there was no resolution. I guess if a FM developer says, i have not seen that happening a lot, except few cases , that means have to live with it? In the meantime, my recommendation to structured FM users is: If you want to convert your docs to PDF, don't upgrade until Adobe do something about these problems. Response from Adobe - Print to .PS issue - Cause and solution
Hello everyone, I am from Adobe and wanted to give you some information about the "Print to .PS" issue that has been reported in the forums recently. We have looked into this issue and found the cause. Today, we wanted to share it with you all along with a workaround solution in the interim. Furthermore, we are working on fixing this issue and expect to come out with a fix soon. What causes the issue This issue occurs when a user who is running FrameMaker11 in unstructured mode and tries to print a book, which was also created in the unstructured mode. This issue is not present when printing a Framemaker document, or when FrameMaker is running in structured mode. Workaround The workaround is to switch to structured mode (you can do so by going to Edit > Preferences > General and use the Product Interface dropdown to select "Structured FrameMaker") and restart FrameMaker. Yes it affects that command too; but you can still print individual files and Save as PDF on the book. -Original Message- From: framers-bounces at lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Carol J. Localization Process with FrameMaker 10
Hi, I work at a translations company and we handle FM files on a daily basis from a few clients. If you need more info on our services and how we would handle repetitions, translation memory matches and variables, please let me know. I apologize if offering our service is frowned upon in this forum, but I could not help but comment in this case. Thanks, Jaime ProTranslating www.protranslating.com -Original Message- From: framers-bounces at lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Robert Lauriston Sent: Wednesday, September 26, 2012 5:25 PM To: framers at lists.frameusers.com Subject: Re: Localization Process with FrameMaker 10 Professional translation services usually take the .fm files and run them through their translation memory software so that the translators know what has changed. The limited utility and additional overhead of a house-developed kludge might well end up making it more expensive than hiring professionals who have the right tools for the job or, if you do a lot of translation in-house, buying translation memory software. ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as jzuniga at protranslating.com. Response from Adobe - Print to .PS issue - Cause and solution
I guess if a FM developer says, "i have not seen that happening a lot, except few cases ," that means have to live with it? In the meantime, my recommendation to structured FM users is: If you want to convert your docs to PDF, don't upgrade until Adobe do something about these problems. save as... FM 8 Mif
Hi to all. A customer of mine ask me to save a lot of FM 8 e FM 10 files, in MIF 8 format. Because this is optimized for translation workflow. I have FM 10 and I could save in MIF 10 or MIF 7 directly. I read about the possibility to save directly in FM8 or MIF8, using scripting. Could someone help me? It's about, perhaps, a free script? FM 10 Copy/Paste sometimes not keeping tags
I just recently made the move to FM10 from FM8. I'm working with three large book files, each was originally created in FM7 and have been moved up to FM8 and now FM10. The issue I'm having is with copy and pasting. Sometimes when I copy and paste something, for example a bulleted paragraph with some bold text, Frame will just paste it all as body text with none of my assigned paragraph and character tags. Other times it works just fine. Normally I use Ctrl + C and Ctrl+ P, but I've had the issue when I use the drop down menus as well. I see the issue with both copy and pasting within the same document, and copy and pasting from one document into another one in a different book file. I've also had the issue when copy and pasting anchored frames. With that I will sometimes just get the nothing to paste error message. Has anyone else had this issue? I did have someone recommend that I save as mif and reopen. If I do that, do I save the whole book as mif, or each file within the book? Thanks! I'm curious to hear how well that works. Seems like editing unstructured documents in structured mode is likely to have side effects. If that weren't the case, why even have the mode switch? Bookmarks don't stay set
I am using Frame 10 in TCS 3 and have a problem that I did not have in Frame 7, 8 or 9. When I print to PDF, I set up my bookmarks in the PDF Setup dialog, but they don't stay set. Every single time I print to PDF, I have to delete all of the other bookmarks that it puts in that field. It takes a long time to get rid of them all. What is the deal. I never had this problem in previous versions. Thank You, Gillian Flato Senior Content Developer Skype: Gillian.B.Flato Gillian.Flato at nexenta.com -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... simple FM10 ExtendScript
Anybody have a simple FM10 ExtendScript for updating a book and saving as PDF? I can't say I'm surprised that the 697-page "Scripting Guide" does not actually provide a clue about how to use ExtendScript.
