Re: More bad news on TCS4: no longer includes Photoshop

2012-09-27 Thread Robert Lauriston
Somebody here reported a bug in printing to .ps.

I gave up on printing to anything other than Adobe PDF because I'd
constantly forget to change the printer back and end up with errors in
generating PDF. Definitely saves me time in the long run never to
print directly.

How about Adobe enhancing Save As PDF so you could set it to always
use a selected printer definition instead of the current printer?

I don't expect that to happen given that from FM8 on close to zero of
the feature enhancements have improved the experience of everyday,
experienced unstructured-mode users.

Re: Localization Process with FrameMaker 10

2012-09-27 Thread Joseph Lorenzini
 Hi Alison,

We plan to hire a professional translator. If you have recommendations for
that, please let me know. And thanks for the workflow. I may end up using
something like that.

One thing I noticed is that you are not using TT edits to identify what
things have changed and need to be translated. Instead, you are assuming
that the translator has appropriate software to flag that in the source FM
files. That would be ideal obviously, if I didn't have to be personally
burden with tracking every single thing that has changed and requires
translation.

Thanks,
Joe

 Simplified Chinese translation folder(s)

**i. **Create Variable files for translation files

**j. **Send files to LSP for quote (including request for creation
of translation Glossary before 1st translation begins. It’s also best to
have this proofed by an in-country expert before beginning the actual
 translation job.)

**k. **Authorize translation based on quote

**l. **When the job is finished, always get a copy of the Glossary
and new/updated Translation Memory (TM) so you can change LSPs at your
 discretion.

**m.**When you do your 2nd and subsequent rounds of translation, the
LSP will process the new FM files and the TM with professional tools (like
TRADOS) to ensure that exact matches, fuzzy matches and repetitions are
factored into the price and job cycle, ensuring that only new or edited
 text needs to be translated.

 ** **

This is a quick overview of my process. Some might find steps c and f-h a
bit of overkill, but as I work with Medical Devices, we have an internal
ISO release process. We are also constantly applying to new countries for
Regulatory approval to sell our systems. I have learned the hard way that
if I cannot recreate on-demand, an exact copy of a specific manual
type/release – sometimes with new document numbers and languages codes –
then things get extremely difficult for me. I also need to be able to
recreate translated manuals with specific changes required by Regulatory
bodies (the SFDA in the People’s Republic of China is particularly
 demanding)

 Hope this helps,

I am using unstructured FrameMaker 10. I am documenting a product in
English, which needs to be translated into Chinese every release. I was
curious what process people use to do the localization. Here is the process
I was thinking about using with the existing documentation.

 1. there would be two versions of each document. One for english and
another Chinese. I thought about using the same Framemaker files and
conditionalizing the text based on language but that seemed awfully messy.
2.place all FM files in SVN so they are source control.
 3. for each release, turn on track changes for the English versions.
 4. once documentation for the release is complete, commit FM files to SVN.

Professional translation services usually take the .fm files and run
them through their translation memory software so that the translators
know what has changed.

The limited utility and additional overhead of a house-developed
kludge might well end up making it more expensive than hiring
professionals who have the right tools for the job or, if you do a lot
of translation in-house, buying translation memory software.

Re: Response from Adobe - Print to .PS issue - Cause and solution

2012-09-27 Thread Roger Shuttleworth

Hello Kapil

Although your workaround and fix will no doubt be highly appreciated by
unstructured users, they don't address the issue that we have seen with
FM 11 /structured /- that is, that printing a file to the Adobe PDF
printer (whether using Save As, Save as PDF, or Print) takes 10 times as
long as it used to. I am not exaggerating. We have a 550-page structured
book that we used to convert to PDF in FM9 in about 10 minutes or less.
Now with FM11 it takes 90 minutes or more.

I originally posted this issue on the Adobe forums - see
http://forums.adobe.com/message/4661181#4661181. But there was no
resolution. I guess if a FM developer says, i have not seen that
happening a lot, except few cases , that means have to live with it?

In the meantime, my recommendation to structured FM users is: If you
want to convert your docs to PDF, don't upgrade until Adobe do something
about these problems.

Hello everyone,

I am from Adobe and wanted to give you some information about the
Print to .PS issue that has been reported in the forums recently. We
have looked into this issue and found the cause. Today, we wanted to
share it with you all along with a workaround solution in the interim.
Furthermore, *we are working on fixing this issue and expect to come
out with a fix soon*.

**

*What causes the issue*

This issue occurs when a user who is running FrameMaker11 in
_unstructured mode_ and tries to print a _book_, which was also
created in the unstructured mode. This issue is not present when
printing a Framemaker document, or when FrameMaker is running in
structured mode.

*Workaround*

The workaround is to switch to structured mode (you can do so by going
to Edit Preferences General and use the Product Interface dropdown
to select Structured FrameMaker) and restart FrameMaker. This would
be a one-time action and afterwards, FrameMaker will launch in
Structured mode and you won't face this issue.

This being said, we do however realize that many of you are working in
the unstructured mode and wouldn't like to see the additional
structured menus and toolbars. To address this, we are providing a set
of workspace, menu and toolbar files (attached with this message).
With these files, a new workspace will be created in your FrameMaker
structured mode and this workspace will only have the unstructured
menus and toolbars. So, you can continue to work in a familiar
environment with only the unstructured features that you are used to
seeing. Please download the attached files and follow the steps below
to copy these files in the relevant folders.

_Steps to create the new Unstructured workspace when running in the
Structured mode_

 1. Copy Unstructured.fws in
%appdata%\Adobe\FrameMaker\11\WorkSpaces\Structured' folder
 2. Copy menus-unstr.cfg in
%appdata%\Adobe\FrameMaker\11\WorkSpaces\Structured\menus' folder
 3. Copy fmtoolbar-unstr.xml in
%appdata%\Adobe\FrameMaker\11\WorkSpaces\Structured\toolbars' folder
 4. Launch FM in structured mode and switch to the 'unstructured'
workspace.

/* Note: this would not remove DITA and S1000D menus. If you want to
remove those menus as well, please write to me separately and I will
be happy to send you those instructions./

Hope that this workaround works as a solution in the short term, while
we work hard on fixing this issue for you. We hope to come out with a
fix soon to this problem.

Response from Adobe - Print to .PS issue - Cause and solution

2012-09-27 Thread Kapil Verma
Hello everyone,

I am from Adobe and wanted to give you some information about the "Print to
.PS" issue that has been reported in the forums recently. We have looked into
this issue and found the cause. Today, we wanted to share it with you all along
with a workaround solution in the interim. Furthermore, we are working on
fixing this issue and expect to come out with a fix soon.

What causes the issue
This issue occurs when a user who is running FrameMaker11 in unstructured mode
and tries to print a book, which was also created in the unstructured mode.
This issue is not present when printing a Framemaker document, or when
FrameMaker is running in structured mode.

Workaround
The workaround is to switch to structured mode (you can do so by going to Edit
> Preferences > General and use the Product Interface dropdown to select
"Structured FrameMaker") and restart FrameMaker. This would be a one-time
action and afterwards, FrameMaker will launch in Structured mode and you won't
face this issue.

This being said, we do however realize that many of you are working in the
unstructured mode and wouldn't like to see the additional structured menus and
toolbars. To address this, we are providing a set of workspace, menu and
toolbar files (attached with this message). With these files, a new workspace
will be created in your FrameMaker structured mode and this workspace will only
have the unstructured menus and toolbars. So, you can continue to work in a
familiar environment with only the unstructured features that you are used to
seeing. Please download the attached files and follow the steps below to copy
these files in the relevant folders.

Steps to create the new "Unstructured" workspace when running in the Structured
mode

 1. Copy Unstructured.fws in
%appdata%\Adobe\FrameMaker\11\WorkSpaces\Structured' folder
 2. Copy menus-unstr.cfg in
%appdata%\Adobe\FrameMaker\11\WorkSpaces\Structured\menus' folder
 3. Copy fmtoolbar-unstr.xml in
%appdata%\Adobe\FrameMaker\11\WorkSpaces\Structured\toolbars' folder
 4. Launch FM in structured mode and switch to the 'unstructured' workspace.
* Note: this would not remove DITA and S1000D menus. If you want to remove
those menus as well, please write to me separately and I will be happy to send
you those instructions.

Hope that this workaround works as a solution in the short term, while we work
hard on fixing this issue for you. We hope to come out with a fix soon to this
problem.

Thanks,

Localization Process with FrameMaker 10

2012-09-27 Thread Jaime Zuniga
Hi,

I work at a translations company and we handle FM files on a daily basis from a
few clients. If you need more info on our services and how we would handle
repetitions, translation memory matches and variables, please let me know.

I apologize if offering our service is frowned upon in this forum, but I could
not help but comment in this case.

Thanks,

Professional translation services usually take the .fm files and run them
through their translation memory software so that the translators know what has
changed.

The limited utility and additional overhead of a house-developed kludge might
well end up making it more expensive than hiring professionals who have the
right tools for the job or, if you do a lot of translation in-house, buying
translation memory software.

Response from Adobe - Print to .PS issue - Cause and solution

But there was no
resolution. I guess if a FM developer says, "i have not seen that
happening a lot, except few cases ," that means have to live with it?

In the meantime, my recommendation to structured FM users is: If you
want to convert your docs to PDF, don't upgrade until Adobe do something
about these problems.

save as... FM 8 Mif

2012-09-27 Thread Mario Valerio
Hi to all.
A customer of mine ask me to save a lot of FM 8 e FM 10 files, in MIF 8
format.
Because this is optimized for translation workflow.
I have FM 10 and I could save in MIF 10 or MIF 7 directly.

I read about the possibility to save directly in FM8 or MIF8, using
scripting.
Could someone help me? It's about, perhaps, a free script?

Thanks, Mario

FM 10 Copy/Paste sometimes not keeping tags

2012-09-27 Thread Ginger Swart
I just recently made the move to FM10 from FM8. I'm working with three large
book files, each was originally created in FM7 and have been moved up to FM8
and now FM10. The issue I'm having is with copy and pasting. Sometimes when I
copy and paste something, for example a bulleted paragraph with some bold text,
Frame will just paste it all as body text with none of my assigned paragraph
and character tags. Other times it works just fine. Normally I use Ctrl + C and
Ctrl+ P, but I've had the issue when I use the drop down menus as well. I see
the issue with both copy and pasting within the same document, and copy and
pasting from one document into another one in a different book file. I've also
had the issue when copy and pasting anchored frames. With that I will sometimes
just get the nothing to paste error message.

Has anyone else had this issue?
I did have someone recommend that I save as mif and reopen. If I do that, do I
save the whole book as mif, or each file within the book?

Thanks!

Bookmarks don't stay set

2012-09-27 Thread Gillian Flato
I am using Frame 10 in TCS 3 and have a problem that I did not have in Frame 7,
8 or 9.

When I print to PDF, I set up my bookmarks in the PDF Setup dialog, but they
don't stay set. Every single time I print to PDF, I have to delete all of the
other bookmarks that it puts in that field. It takes a long time to get rid of
them all. What is the deal. I never had this problem in previous versions.
