Cross-reference to a string that retains the conditional text attributes (markings) of the linked-to string

2013-10-08 Thread Barry.Meislin
Greetings,

Working in unstructured FM10:

1.
I would like to link to a string that includes conditional text and have that
link show the conditional text attributes (e.g., color and overline/underline,
etc.) in the linked-to string.

Note: In my experience, a cross-reference to a string that includes
conditional text does NOT show the conditional text attributes, so that the
cross-reference appears in normally formatted (e.g., black) text only (i.e.,
with character attributes but not conditional text attributes). That is, the
conditional text attributes are removed.

Is there a way to do this?

2.
An alternate possibility might be to define a variable with conditional text
included in the variable; however, I have not been able to find a way to do
include conditional text WITHIN variable definitions.

Is there a way to do this?

3.
Another alternative, I suppose, might be to transfer table CELLS that contain
strings with conditional text; that is, to cross-reference the entire table
CELL; that is, to transfer the contents of the CELL automatically. (However,
I'm not sure that this would be any different than a regular cross-reference.)

Is there a way to link to table cells?

TIA for your help,
Barry Meislin

Adding a TOC to a book causes FM to crash

2014-04-22 Thread Barry.Meislin
Greetings,

I have two questions:

In a specific directory, adding a TOC file to an existing book always causes FM
to crash so that the book cannot be updated with the TOC file. (Note: Adding
non-TOC files to the book works fine.)

Does anyone have any experience with this "phenomenon"?

Also, I am looking for a decent compare function to compare Acrobat (PDF)
files. The one currently bundled in Acrobat is, in my view, atrocious,
especially when compared with much earlier versions, e.g., 7---either that or I
haven't figured out how to use it properly. If you can recommend a decent
compare application (or can point out how to improve or configure the bundled
compare function), I'd be very grateful.

Thanks much,
Barry Meislin

[Framers] Compare functionality no longer works (Message shown is: "Could not create the summary document")

2018-01-29 Thread Barry.Meislin
Greetings,

After years of using the FM Compare function to create both Summary files and
CMP files, my PC no longer allows this.

Instead of generating the Summary and CMP files, I get the following message:

"Could not create the summary document. Close some documents or increase FM's
memory size. Then try again."

I get this message even after I reboot and try to compare two small FM files.

Note that I work off a network; however, my colleagues, who also use the
network, are able to use the function.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated since I need this
functionality to work.

Thanks in advance,
Barry Meislin

[Framers] FM10-to-FM2017 upgrades (on Windows 10))

2018-08-14 Thread Barry.Meislin
Greetings,

We are considering upgrading from FM10 to FM2017 (on Windows 10 OS).

It would be, of course, a considerable expense so we would like to know if
there are any serious or prominent issues that one should be aware of in
advance if, in fact, we decide to go through with it.

Is there a general consensus on this?

Alternatively, is there an already-existing general discussion of these two
issues (the upgrade itself as well as the robustness and reliability of FM2017
on Windows 10)?

Thanks for your help,
Barry Meislin

[Framers] Frame19 screen (Windows 10, 64-bit) blanks out every so often and then returns

2019-02-07 Thread Barry.Meislin
Greetings,
Every so often, Frame19, which we've just installed (64-bit, Windows 10
Enterprise) blanks out and then returns to the screen.

It's as if something is causing the screen to "refresh".

Note that if we're using a book file, the *.fm files disappear and reappear;
however the book file stays on the screen (i.e., does not disappear).

The refresh time can be several seconds, sometimes shorter, sometimes longer.
Occurrences seem to be entirely random.

Needless to say, it's extremely irritating.

Does anyone know why this might be happening and what can be done to prevent it?

Thanks much,
Barry Meislin

[Framers] Initial table footnote that is itself a cross-reference to the footnote text

2019-05-30 Thread Barry.Meislin
Greetings,
In FM (all versions) I can create a table footnote (e.g., 1) and then add,
separately (in a different place), a cross-reference to that footnote (i.e., to
1) such that, in FM and in the generated PDF, the cross-reference to that
footnote will jump to the text (of footnote 1). In the generated PDF, a "link
symbol" (i.e., pointing finger) indicates the link when the cursor is placed on
the footnote number.

However the original, i.e., initial footnote (i.e., 1), does NOT actually link
to the footnote text below. That is, the initial footnote does NOT act like a
cross reference (and the initial footnote number in the PDF does not show a
"link symbol"---pointing finger---when the cursor is placed on it).

How can I make that initial footnote number behave like a cross reference? That
is, act like a link in the PDF?

Thanks in advance,
Barry Meislin

[Framers] In FM 2019, the "Update Book" function "dies" in the middle of a long book

2020-01-09 Thread Barry.Meislin
Hi,
I have a particularly long book (about 30 files, 1200 pages total,
non-structured FM) that "dies" in the middle (towards the first third,
actually) of the update (book generation).

I update other books successfully---all the time. It's just this one book that
has been causing me tremendous, frustrating problems.

Actually, I succeed on the first attempt (typically); but can't get it to work
after that and this prevents me from being able to work on it.

Any ideas why this is happening and what I can do to "fix" it?

Thanks much in advance,
Barry Meislin

[Framers] Problem with searching for a specific condition when using condition "expressions"

2020-05-06 Thread Barry.Meislin
Greetings,
Working in a book, I have a condition (let's call it "XYZ") set as "shown" in a
(book-wide) condition expression.
I imported the expression (containing many other "equations" besides showing
"XYZ") to all the files in a book.
Some (but not all) of the files in the book have text and/or tables with
condition "XYZ". (The condition, however, appears in the list of conditions for
all files in the book.)
When I do a book-wide search for condition "XYZ" it does NOT find any instances
of that condition in any of the documents (even though the condition exists in
some of them, perhaps only in tables, however---might that make a difference?).
When I limit the search to a document-wide search for "XYZ" in a document that
contains "XYZ", it does find the condition (in that document).
Note that although a book-wide search does not work for condition "XYZ", it
does work for other conditions (besides "XYZ") in the book, when doing a
book-wide search.
Is this a known bug/feature?
Thanks in advance

[Framers] X-ref issue: FM links that work in the FM file but don't work in the PDF file that is generated from it

2020-05-14 Thread Barry.Meislin
Greetings,
A cross-reference problem has cropped up in FM-to-PDF generation.
Links that work in an FM file (i.e., when you double click on a link, clicking
the resulting "Go to Source" button jumps you to the correct source)
do NOT always work when the file is converted to PDF.
This means that to check the validity of x-refs, you cannot rely on the FM file
but have to search the PDF file.
(Needless to say, this is extremely tedious...)
I suspect that the phenomenon is caused by a combination of conditional text
and X-ref markers that have somehow been perverted but what I don't understand
is why FM doesn't (or can't) identify the perverted links as "bad links".
If you have any ideas, TIA,
Barry Meislin

Hi,

In Acrobat open the "Edit PDF" tool.
Click on the Link icon and select "Add/Edit Web or Document Link".
This will highlight all links (e.g. cross-references).
When you right-click on a link and select properties, you can check in the
Action tab the destination.

Best regards

Winfried

IIRC there's a way to expose the information in links within a PDF. Perhaps the
"missing link" to the failure can be found there. Unfortunately, I've forgotten
how to do that magic.

[Framers] FM19-to-PDF generation results in a PDF that is double the size the second time I generate it from identical FM files.

2020-06-23 Thread Barry.Meislin
Greetings,
I've encountered an aggravating phenomenon that I need a fix for:
The second time I create a PDF from the same FM19 book, the PDF comes out at
about twice the size as the first time I do it.
Details:
Using FM19, I create a PDF by printing a book to a PS file and then distilling
the PS file using Adobe Distiller XI, "Professional version" 11.0.0779, with
the "Compatibility" setting set to "Adobe 5.0 (PDF1.4)". (Note that the
"Compatibility" dropdown menu lists several Compatibility optionsup to
"Adobe 8.0 (PDF1.7)".
The first time I do this I end up with a PDF that is (in this case) about 5.5
KB.
The second time I do it (using the same files) the PDF size is about 11 KB.
Note that in both case, I perform a "save as" operation on the PDF to try to
reduce its size.

I have no idea what causes this doubling in size and I really need the
smaller-sized files.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Best wishes,
Barry Meislin

Yes, the FM files were resaved before the PDF was regenerated the second time.
Thanks for your response.

Wild guesses:

One clue might be that 5kb growth is not much, IMO. Is it possible that the
second PDF is storing information about its generation history? Perhaps a
utility that compares the internals of the files has the answer.

Are the FM files changed or resaved before generating the second PDF?
